MultiAir technology has revolutionised the petrol engine, reducing fuel consumption and CO² emissions, while delivering even more powerful performance.
Unlike conventional car engines, which use a mechanical throttle to control air intake, MultiAir engines use electrohydraulic valves that can be controlled far more precisely. The result: more power for less effort. Smart stuff.
The secret to MultiAir’s success is variable valve timing: the flexible opening and closing of valves according to how much air the engine needs. This optimises combustion efficiency, while guaranteeing brilliant performance.
The MultiAir engine may be compact, but it doesn’t deliver any less of a punch. We’ve boosted its power by adding a turbocharger, so you get the best of both worlds: a sporty ride with great fuel economy.
MultiAir technology features in our award-winning TwinAir engine, officially the lowest CO2 emission petrol car engine in the world.* It reduces CO2 emissions by a whopping 15% without taking any of the fun out of your drive.
We’ve spent decades developing our diesel engine technology, and the result is MultiJet– our smoothest, quietest, most efficient diesel engine yet.
The evolution of our pioneering common rail diesel engine, MultiJet makes our diesels a pleasure to drive. With more control over the engine’s fuel injectors and more fuel injections per cycle, you get a quieter, smoother ride that’s gentler on the environment too: emissions for the Fiat 500 1.3 MultiJet are just 104g/km.
Boosting the performance of all our MultiJet engines is the small but powerfully efficient Eco Turbo. It’s a smart little turbocharger that changes its geometry to give you 20% more torque at low engine speeds, while cutting fuel and CO2 emissions.
Can’t decide between the easy comfort of an automatic, or the performance of a manual? With our Dualogic robotised gearbox you get both – and it saves you fuel too.
Say goodbye to clutch pedals, as Dualogic lets you changes gears smoothly and efficiently without one. Select 'Manual', then simply flick the gear lever forwards or backwards and the system does the hard work for you. Choose ‘Automatic’ and Dualogic takes full control, making sure you’re in the right gear to get the best performance from your car. There’s even an 'Economy' mode if you want to cut your fuel consumption right down.
New Fiat Offers
Being in the correct gear helps improve your fuel consumption. Gear Stick Indicator (GSI) tells you when it’s the right time to change up or down, so the engine is running at its most efficient number of revs.
We’ve added intelligent technology like Start&Stop to our engines to help you reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption even further.
No need to waste fuel while you’re idling in traffic queues, or stopped at traffic lights. Start&Stop turns off your engine when you come to a standstill, without you needing to turn the ignition key. And when it’s time to set off, it’ll automatically restart as soon as you depress the clutch. Powered by the car’s engine, alternators create electrical energy to recharge your car’s battery. Unlike conventional devices, Fiat’s smart alternator chooses the best time to do this, such as during braking or deceleration. It won’t recharge while you’re accelerating, which helps reduce the load on the engine and saves you fuel.
‘i-efficiency’ is what we call the many refinements we’ve made to our cars to reduce consumption, cut emissions and make your drive more comfortable and enjoyable.

Low-friction flexible gas rings, low-viscosity engine and gearbox oil and a variable displacement pump which adjusts oil volume with demand, increases efficiency and reduces wear and tear during engine transmission.
A cold engine means higher friction and fuel consumption. So we use an electronically controlled thermostat to keep the engine at the optimum temperature at all times. Many models come with an Eco Mode button, which optimises power supply and dramatically reduces fuel consumption and emissions; ideal for stop-and-start city driving. From the bumper to the spoiler and right down to clever add-ons underneath the car’s body, everything has been aerodynamically designed to overcome air friction and control lift. Low rolling coefficient tyres reduce contact resistance with the ground, limit noise and prevent the generation of fine dust.
