As part of a tour, we will be hosting a series of tyre safety clinics in a bid to promote tyre safety and educate drivers about the importance of tyre maintenance.

Experienced Arnold Clark staff will be handing out free tyre checks, free tyre safety kits (containing a pressure gauge and a tread-depth gauge) and useful tyre advice.

Paul Bryceland, Service Manager at Rutherglen Ford/Fiat/Abarth, said:

‘At Arnold Clark, we’re committed to ensuring that your tyres are safe and legal. Many people don’t realise how easy it is to keep on top of their tyres, so we use these tyre clinics to educate and to explain how to check things like tread depth and tyre pressure. Knowing how to carry out these simple checks means you can continually monitor your tyres and stay safe on the road.’

Over the past five years, there has been an annual average of 198 deaths and 1,135 serious injuries on UK roads as a result of tyre-related incidents. These figures don’t have to be so high. With just a few simple checks, you can make sure you keep yourself and your passengers safe on the roads.

We spoke to Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe (the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation), about the importance of tyre maintenance. Stuart commented,

‘What TyreSafe urges motorists to do is to carry out tyre safety checks on a monthly basis to substantially reduce their risk of becoming involved in a tyre-related incident on the roads.

‘Vehicles have become progressively more reliable over the years so fewer of us need to carry out the weekly maintenance we once did on components like oil and water, but tyres are still in direct contact with the road and all the potential physical objects on them. Even new tyres lose pressure over time and can become damaged by potholes or kerbing.’

If tyre tread depth is below 1.6 mm, drivers are not only risking their safety by increasing their braking distance, but are also risking three points on their licence and a £2,500 fine for each illegal tyre.

Regular tyre pressure checks have been linked with reduced numbers of serious injuries in car crashes. As the only part of a vehicle in constant contact with the road, tyres are a component that cannot be neglected.
