Nissan overview

Nissan’s life started in 1933 in Yokohama, a city to the south of Tokyo, Japan. Yoshisuke Aikawa set up Tobata Casting Co., Ltd, a car component casting business, later establishing an automobile division. It is this company that would lay the foundations for automobile manufacturing industries in Japan and go on to become Nissan as we know it today.

Since 1999, Nissan has been part of an alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi. The marques now share expertise and technologies in manufacturing their models. Nissan produces a range of practical cars that deliver value for money. The manufacturer set the trend for compact crossovers and helped to make electric driving more accessible to UK drivers. Today, every new Nissan sold in the UK has an electrified version, with the manufacturer planning to have an all-electric line-up by 2030.

Nissan has also worked with governments and power companies to help improve and support charging infrastructure. Nissan is a pioneer of electric driving, heavily investing in making electric technology affordable and practical. Its e-Power technology delivers what it described as “fuelled by petrol, driven by electric.”

Popular Nissan models

The Qashqai is one of the brand’s most popular crossovers, known for offering plenty of room and delivering fuel economy. A smaller model in the same subsector is the Juke, a subcompact crossover SUV, sitting in the B-segment of the market. Like the Qashqai, it was one of the first of its class to be sold in the UK. The Juke brings SUV styling and ride height to urban dwellers. Those looking for extra space and practicality can opt for the Nissan X-Trail, the largest in the brand’s celebrated SUV range in the UK.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the supermini Nissan Micra, one of the brand’s most popular city cars. It was first released in 1992 and continues to receive updates to this day. Drivers keen on a hatchback can opt for the LEAF, which brought all-electric driving to the masses in 2010. Over the decade since the LEAF’s release, more than 500,000 models have been sold.

Manufacturer awards

Given its commitment to electric vehicles, it will come as no surprise that Nissan was awarded the 2022 Sustainability Initiative Award at the Auto Trader New Car awards 2022. In the same year, the striking, all-electric Ariya model won the AutoExpress Car of the Year. It has also been recognised for its SUV range, scooping overall winner in the 4X4 of the Year awards 2022. Both the X-Trail and Qashqai also picked up a 2022 4X4 of the Year award.
