Premium Coupé quality doesn’t come much better than the exceptional Audi A5. Since its debut in 2007, the A5 has consistently showcased what it means to be sleek, refined, and meticulously crafted. Its generous dimensions are complemented by a dynamic stance, sporty allure, and a plethora of top-tier equipment. As a proud member of the esteemed German manufacturer’s lineup, the A5 is a testament to unparalleled performance and precision engineering.

The design language of the Audi A5 is both understated and captivating. While competitors like the BMW 4 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé have their own appeal, the A5's gracefully flowing bodylines, coupled with its aerodynamically optimised roof, give it a unique edge. These design elements not only enhance its visual appeal but also contribute to the exceptional driving dynamics that the model offers.

Audi A5 updates and facelifts

Since the launch of the initial A5, the vehicle has been refined and perfected through facelifts in 2011 and the introduction of a second-generation edition in 2017. With the arrival of a third generation in 2024, the model shows no sign of slowing down when it comes to improvements. Regardless of the generation, the cabin of the A5 is supremely comfortable, abundantly spacious, and packed with some of the most engaging technology available.

Like many vehicles in the Audi lineup, the A5 comes in a host of body styles and trim levels, not to mention an abundance of powerful petrol and diesel engines. What’s more, in addition to the Coupé, there have been various RS 5 editions that have received the manufacturer’s acclaimed Racing Sport treatment, delivering an even more exhilarating drive and added power. Plus, three and five-door options, as well as Cabriolet and Sportback iterations, all ensure there’s a used Audi A5 to suit everyone.

Audi’s reputation for automotive excellence really does shine through in the A5. Every facet of the car, from its meticulously crafted exterior to its plush interior, exudes premium quality. The A5's agile engines and unmatched driveability further solidify its position as a top choice in its class.

Practicality and style of the car

The Audi A5 is a sleek and sophisticated Coupé but is also surprisingly practical. The A5 more than impresses when it comes to interior space, luggage capacity, and even running costs, with the careful consideration of the design enabling you to get more from the vehicle than you might expect. What’s more, due to the powerful nature of the Audi engine options, the A5 even boasts a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,000kg, making it suitable for a range of caravans and trailers.

Long-distance comfort and incredible build quality are hallmarks of the Audi A5, with the cabin offering plenty of head and legroom as well as premium materials throughout. When opting for the Coupé, you can look forward to seating for four, while five-door models add a third, central seat on the back row, making it ideal for those with families. Moreover, ISOFIX fittings will help you mount child seats on each of the outer rear seats, keeping little ones safe and secure.

On top of the roomy and expansive feel of the cabin, the Audi A5 boasts a highly practical boot to cater to a wide range of daily needs and activities. Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or simply doing your weekly grocery shopping, the A5 ensures you have ample room to accommodate your belongings. Depending on the specific generation or variant of the model you opt for, the A5 provides up to 480 litres of space dedicated just for storage. This already generous space can be further maximised, reaching an impressive 980 litres when you fold down the rear seats.

Running costs

Since the arrival of the Mk2 model in 2017, the Audi A5 sits between groups 24–48 (out of 50) in terms of insurance. When it comes to road tax, expect to pay anywhere from £20 per year (e.g. for the SE 2.0 TDI Ultra model) all the way up to £570 annually.

How a used Audi A5 drives

Audi is a name that is synonymous with quality performance. Whether in petrol or diesel form, the Audi A5 impresses in terms of driveability, handling, smoothness and efficiency. Some of the model options currently available have an abundance of power, with sportier editions of the A5 packing a real punch during your motoring. The overall experience is one of control and refinement, with the A5 the perfect option for open-road cruising and urban environments alike.

Those engine options making up the second generation of Audi A5s, i.e. those from 2017, encompass a number of petrol and diesel powertrains with various power outputs. The entry-level option is the 2.0-litre 35 TFSI petrol capable of 148bhp and the ability to hit 62mph in as little as 8.9 seconds. This same petrol edition also comes in 40 TFSI iteration with 201bhp, and a 45 TFSI producing 261bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 5.5 seconds. An additional top-of-the-range 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine is provided for the RS5 edition of the vehicle, with this 444bhp model achieving 62mph in a breathtaking 3.9 seconds.

If you prefer a diesel-powered engine, the Audi A5 features a 2.0-litre unit in both 35 TDI and 40 TDI iterations. The former of these options produces 161bhp while the higher output of 201bhp comes with Audi’s acclaimed quattro four-wheel drive. Regardless of the engine chosen, all models are equipped with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Features you can expect in a Audi A5

Audi models are widely known for the overall level of quality provided by the vehicle, with a sleek and smooth appearance defined by the carefully tapered roofline and sporty alloy wheels. The front end has been noticeably refreshed over the years too, with the signature Audi grille flanked by sharp LED lighting.

Interior

The sense of elegance afforded by the exterior continues to the vehicle’s cabin. Both front and rear cabin compartments feel sturdy and luxurious, with high-quality materials that are soft-to-touch throughout. Seating is plush and comfortable, and the intuitive arrangement of key vehicle controls puts you in complete command at all times. Not only that, but the Audi A5 standard Virtual Cockpit provides a digital dashboard of key motoring information, sat nav and more.

Technology

Dominating the dashboard, however, is the 10.1-inch MMI Navigation Plus colour touchscreen. In addition, newer editions feature a 4G connection, meaning you can access various apps for even more detailed information in real time.

In this respect the Audi A5 offers plenty, with everything from autonomous braking to adaptive cruise control, to a rear-view camera and speed limiter with a distance sensor. This range of technology has helped the A5 achieve a maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP, with an 89% adult occupant rating and 87% child occupant score.
