Facelifts and updates to the Fiat 500L

The Fiat 500L is the mid-size tier of the Fiat 500 model and is larger than the Fiat 500 city car but smaller than the 500L Wagon.

It was first launched in 2012, with a facelift in 2017 adding new outer styling, interior features, including a TFT touchscreen and new engines. This facelift also consolidated the model’s original four trim levels into three.

The 500L was in production until 2021.

Practicality of a used Fiat 500L

The Fiat 500L is a compact model with a length of 4,147mm, height of 1,665mm and width of 1,784mm. This makes it 70mm longer than the Ford B-MAX and 590mm longer than the Fiat 500.

This added length allows the model to offer good boot space, with a standard 400 litres available – more than the Ford B-MAX’s 318 litres. With the rear two seats folded flat, storage space on the 500L can be expanded to 1,310 litres. The boot also has a three-level floor, making it easy to store your shopping.

The 500L is also a very spacious model thanks to its high roof line and good length. This space affords all passengers good head and leg room. All of the model’s seats are highly adjustable with a quoted 1,500 different seat positions available thanks to the rear sliding rail. Even the front passenger seat can be folded away entirely, meaning the 500L can store loads of up 2.4 metres in length.

How a used Fiat 500L drives

A used Fiat 500L has a wide selection of petrol and diesel engines. All engines also come with an Eco drive setting which pushes the mileage of these engines further.

In the diesel range, there is a 1.3-litre MultiJet II engine, which generates 85bhp. It is available with a five-speed automatic gearbox and accelerates from 0-62mph in 14.9 seconds. It also has excellent fuel economy and returns up to 67.3–70.6mpg.

There is also a 1.6-litre MultiJet II option, which produces 104bhp. This engine goes from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds while returning up to 60.1–62.8mpg.

This 1.6-litre MultiJet engine was re-released in 2014 as a turbodiesel option, which generates 118bhp. It has a fuel economy of 65.7–67.3mpg and goes from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds.

In the petrol range, you will find a 0.9-litre TwinAir engine, which produces 105bhp thanks to its turbocharger and intercooler. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.3 seconds while delivering 55.4–58.9mpg.

There is also a 1.4-litre T-Jet engine, which generates 94bhp, returns up to 42.2mpg and accelerates to 62mph in 12.8 seconds. This engine can also be configured to produce 118bhp. This version goes from 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds with a fuel economy of 40.9mpg.

Features you can expect to find in a used Fiat 500L

Interior

The Fiat 500L has a practical and well-organised interior with hard-wearing plastic and tactile surfaces found throughout. The gearstick and multi-functional steering wheel are easy to grip thanks to their robust design. The cluster of buttons and switches on the centre console are also built to last, giving the cabin a well-designed feel.

In the driving seat, your high seat placement means you will have a clear view of the road. This is helped by the wraparound rear windscreen, wide front windscreen and narrow A-pillars, providing a 360-degree view. It’s also easy to get comfortable on longer journeys thanks to the manual lumbar adjustment under your seat. Technology

Across the Fiat 500L’s trims, you will find plenty of drive-enhancing technology. On the entry-level Pop trim, you’ll find a functional set of safety features, including airbags, tyre pressure monitoring and hill-hold assist. Pop trims manufactured after 2017 will also come with cruise control. On higher trims, the Fiat 500L will also come with heated door mirrors, front fog lights and sat nav.

Safety

The Fiat 500L was awarded the maximum five-star rating by Euro NCAP, with an adult safety score of 94% and a child safety score of 78%. Adding to the Fiat 500L’s safety for children, you will also find three ISOFIX points, one on the front passenger seat and one on each of the outer rear seats.

It comes with traction control, automatic emergency braking and a ‘City Brake’ control, which detects obstacles in front of the car and brakes if the driver fails to do so. The Trekking trim will also come with mud and snow tyres, making it a great option if you’re planning on heading onto rougher terrain.
