Mazda overview

Mazda (pronounced MAZ-duh) began as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in 1920 in Japan, manufacturing cork. It wasn’t until 1931 that its first vehicle – the Mazda-Go – was launched. The name Mazda has a dual origin. It derives from both the founder’s name – Jujiro Matsuda – and from Ahura Mazda, the god of harmony, intelligence and wisdom in Zoroastrianism, which comes from the earliest civilisation in West Asia.

It wasn’t until 1984 that the name Mazda was officially adopted for the company. However, every automobile it produced had born the name. Mazda is perhaps most noted for its development of the Wankel rotary engine, a type of combustion engine that is lighter, more compact and incorporates fewer moving parts than conventional piston engines.

Today, Mazda’s appeal centres around the craftsmanship and care put into its vehicles. Its cars are designed to create an emotional connection with the driver in the same way a horse and rider connect. The brand is also committed to sustainability, using recycled materials in its interiors and offering all-electric models such as the MX-30.

Popular Mazda models

The Mazda CX-5 was first released in 2012, quickly gaining popularity as a family SUV. Spacious, well equipped and with reasonable running costs, it was the perfect solution for everything from school runs to outdoor sports excursions. The Mk2 arrived in 2017 with a host of new technologies, making it safer to drive with added convenience features. It remains a great alternative to SUVs from some of the more mainstream brands.

Introduced in 2003, the Mazda 3 comes in hatchback and saloon guises. Comfortable, practical and economical, it’s a great choice for young families, first-time buyers and those looking for a vehicle with plenty of space. One of the brand’s best-selling models globally, it had sold over six million units by spring 2019.

Based on the Mk4 Mazda 3, the CX-30 is a subcompact crossover that made its debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. With its lightweight construction and modest dimensions, it’s ideally suited to urban life. For those needing extra capability, all-wheel drive iterations can handle challenging conditions and rougher terrains.

A smart and stylish supermini, the Mazda 2 launched in 2002. Both three and five-door variants are available, and models from 2019 onwards feature mild hybrid technology to make them more economical and environmentally friendly. With an impressive level of standard equipment too, the Mazda 2 is an appealing alternative to other popular models like the Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio.

The Mazda MX-5 is nothing short of iconic, being the best-selling two-seater sports car, not just in Britain, but in the world. Agile, quick and available in both hard and soft-top versions, it has evolved through four generations, with the one millionth vehicle rolling off the production line in April 2016.

Arriving in 2002, the Mazda 6 is a multi-award-winning vehicle that boasts sharp styling and a high-quality cabin. Ideal for families and those looking for a sleek commuting vehicle, it comes in saloon and estate formats and provides a smooth, comfortable drive and great long-distance efficiency.

Manufacturer awards

With its long history of automotive manufacturing, it’s no surprise that Mazda has received a host of illustrious awards over the years. The brand itself has received numerous accolades, with Feefo conferring on it a Platinum Trusted Service Award in 2023. This recognises businesses that offer a world-class customer experience. In the same year, the brand was recognised at the Reuters D.R.I.V.E Honours for its commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion in the automotive industry.

Among Mazda’s most prestigious awards in recent years include the World Car of the Year title, awarded to the MX-5 in 2016, and the World Car Design of the Year award, presented to the Mazda 3 in 2020. Design is one of the manufacturer’s strengths, and both its CX-30 and MX-30 were recognised at the Red Dot Design Awards in 2020.

Mazda owners have consistently shown satisfaction with their vehicles. The brand finished 4th out of 29 automakers in the 2021 Auto Express Driver Power ownership survey. This assesses cars based on their reliability, practicality, handling and performance, and is a widely recognised and respected survey.
