Volvo XC90 side on from the front

The Volvo XC90 is a large, seven-seater SUV. It has a reputation as being one of the leading SUVs on the market. The largest in the Volvo range, this premium model brings a vast amount of boot space, great comfort and an excellent drive, making it extremely well suited to long journeys with lots of passengers.

Volvo XC90 updates and facelifts

The XC90 was first launched in 2002 and has been updated regularly. Facelifts in 2007 and 2012 restyled the shape of its taillights, remodelled its front and rear bumpers, added new engines and a revamped infotainment system.

Following the extensively updated Mk1, the Mk2 was released in 2015. In its second generation, the XC90 has evolved further, growing in size, adding more technology and sporting a different body design. The Mk2 XC90 was given a facelift in 2019, fitting a new front grille and revised front and rear fascias.

Practicality and style of the car

The XC90 combines exceptional levels of boot space and comfort with a rewarding and smooth drive. All of which makes it an excellent choice for drivers looking for a large, very comfortable and top-quality people carrier.

The XC90’s large size and excellent practicality make it one of the largest SUVs on the road. The Mk2’s length of 4,953mm, height of 1,776mm and width of 1,923mm make it taller than the BMW X5 and Audi Q7. The Mk2 is also 153mm longer and 23mm wider than the Mk1.

While available as a seven-seat model, the seats are also foldable to create more boot space. With all seven seats up, the Mk2 has 356 litres of boot space. With the rear two seats down, boot space grows to 1,007 litres while by folding all five rear seats down, there is 1,856 litres of space.

Designed for family adventures, a used Volvo XC90 is a great option for towing trailers. With the B5 diesel engine, it has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,800kg which is enough for almost any caravan.

Across all seven seats, there is good leg and knee room, with even the rear two seats having good headroom for smaller passengers. Deep door bins are featured throughout and all passenger seats have their own drinks holder and a small tray for storing small items. There are also two ISOFIX points fitted to the middle rear seats.

Running costs

The XC90’s insurance group ranges from 37 to 45, which is average for large, premium SUVs. It also qualifies for an annual road tax of £570.

How a used Volvo XC90 drives

A used Volvo XC90 can come with different petrol, diesel, mild hybrid or plug-in electric engines. Many used XC90s will come with a 2.0-litre B5 petrol engine which has 247bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds with a range of 31.7–44.1mpg. The B6 2.0-litre engine has 296bhp and can go from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, while returning a range of up to 30.7mpg.

The B5 engine can also come as a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel. It generates 230bhp and can accelerate to 62mph in 7.6 seconds while returning a range of up to 39.7mpg.

With the launch of the Mk2 in 2015, mild hybrid technology has been added to both petrol and diesel engines to increase their range. In mild hybrid versions of a used XC90, a 48-volt battery recovers energy used when braking which can help petrol and diesel engines achieve a more efficient drive.

There is also a plug-in hybrid engine. The T8 plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0-litre, 320bhp petrol engine with an electric motor which produces 87bhp for a total of 376bhp, with extra power being absorbed by the car’s powertrain. This engine has an all-electric range of up to 40 miles thanks to its 18.8kWh battery and can go from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds. The T8’s combined range of 108.6mpg, makes it one of the most fuel-efficient large hybrid engines in its class, bettering the Audi Q7’s TFSI e electric range of 29 miles and 104.6mpg.

Depending on the age of the vehicle, a used Volvo XC90 may come with a seven or eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, while a five-speed manual gearbox is also available on models manufactured before 2015.

Features you can expect in a Volvo XC90

The XC90’s large size is enhanced by masterful exterior design which stands out on the road. Along with a flared front grille, T-shaped narrow headlights and deep front bumper all give the model an instantly recognisable appearance. For added detailing, minimalist creases run across the elongated front bumper and doors, helping it turn heads from every angle.

Interior

Volvo XC90 interior front seats

Step into the cabin and the exceptional design continues throughout. Smooth leather features across the dashboard, upholstery and steering wheel, with precision stitching across all surfaces. While most entry-level trims on the Mk2 are available in a black interior colouring, silver chrome accents create a striking contrast. In its top-tier Inscription Pro trim, the XC90 comes with smooth Nappa leather upholstery.

The raised driving seat position gives an expansive view of the road. The driving seat on the Mk2 has two-way lumbar support which is easily adjusted with controls under the seat, helping you stay comfortable on long journeys. Opt for the R-Design trim and there is four-way lumbar support. For even more comfort, the top-level Inscription Pro trim adds heated seats and massage functionality.

Technology

Volvo XC90 infotainment screen with sat-nav displayed on screen

Used XC90 cars may feature a 12.3-inch driver’s display screen in the instrument cluster. This display shows key drive information, including the electric charge and remaining petrol range, sat nav and speed. You can easily customise this display and toggle between screens using smooth-touch buttons on the multi-functional steering wheel.

Some XC90s will also come with a nine-inch touchscreen display on the centre console, which contains Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system. Sensus allows you to quickly navigate between different features, such as hands-free phone and sat nav, while also updating apps through over-the-air technology. This system is easy to use and its automatic updating functionality means you always have an excellent range of infotainment at your disposal. All Mk2 trim levels also feature Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

As part of the infotainment system, most XC90s have a 1,400-watt, 19-speaker sound system. Opt for the R-Design trim and a top-tier 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system will be fitted delivering up to 1,610 Watts of superb sound quality throughout the cabin.

Safety

Volvo XC90 from the front

Volvo’s good safety record means the XC90 is one of the safest cars on the market. As well as receiving a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, it has an adult occupant rating of 97%, singling this model out. It also received a child occupant rating of 87% and a 100% score for its safety assist systems. As part of its suite of safety features, some used XC90s will have autonomous emergency braking, seven safety bags, blind spot detection, a run-off road system which can correct the car’s path when it is turning off the road, and energy-absorbent seats that can reduce the impact of a crash.
