For used Abarth 595 cars, choose Arnold Clark

A compact yet exciting sports car, the Abarth 595 is an urban supermini that’s ideal for those who want urban practicality teamed with thrilling performance. First launched in 2008, it was originally dubbed the Fiat 500 Abarth, the ‘fast version of the Fiat 500’. When the marque underwent a refresh in 2016, Abarth became an entity in its own right – similar to the separation of Citroën and DS. It was then that the model became the Abarth 595.

Making waves within the hot hatch segment, the Abarth 595 was awarded the Best City Car title at the 2019 Best Car Awards for the fourth year in a row. It continues to impress with its turbocharged T-jet engine options, advanced technology and striking design. Small but mighty, the Abarth 595 is a practical city car perfect for navigating busy traffic or cruising on the motorway. With light handling and a tight turning circle, it’s easy to park and manoeuvre, even in the tightest of spaces.

The Abarth 595 is available as a hatchback or convertible and is offered in three trim levels – 595, 595 Turismo and 595 Competizione. There are also three power levels to satisfy customer demands. In addition to these core trims are a number of special editions with their own exclusive specification.

The Abarth 595 has a three-door body style and two rear seats. As such, its main competition comes from models such as the Volkswagen up! GTI and the MINI Cooper.

Abarth 595 updates and facelifts

As well as a new name, the Abarth 595 received a 2016 facelift to catapult it into a new era. It received a larger front end for cooling purposes and a more pronounced, sporty diffuser at the rear. It also came with a total of 15 different body colours. Three optional customisation packs were also launched, with extras such as side stickers and contrasting mirror caps, adding extra personalisation options and a varity of unique aesthetics.

Inside, the cabin gained Alcantara leather detailing, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a new instrument panel. Under the bonnet, a power boost of 5bhp was given to all models except the Competizione.

A number of upgrades were announced for the Abarth 595 in 2022, including a streamlined trim range. Additional features from the Style Pack included an upgraded Beats stereo, xenon headlights and a new Orange Racing paint colour.

Practicality and style of the car

Its boot, which matches that of the Fiat 500 and 500C, has 185 litres of space, enough room for shopping bags or a couple of holdalls for a weekend away. If you need more space and are travelling solo or with a front passenger only, simply fold the rear seats down and this will extend the capacity to 550 litres.

Running costs

Most Abarth 595 cars occupy groups 25–30 out of 50 for insurance, although some of the higher powered and special edition variants sit in groups 31–35. Most iterations of the model are taxed at £180 – the standard rate applied to vehicles manufactured after April 2017 with a list price of less than £40,000.

How a used Abarth 595 drives

The Abarth 595 has a 1.4-litre T-jet turbo petrol engine. This offers three outputs: 143bhp, 163bhp and 178bhp. All offer a powerful drive, enabling you to zip through city traffic with ease, and come with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The 143bhp variant develops 206Nm of torque and can reach 62mph from a standstill in 7.8 seconds.

The 163bhp engine develops 230Nm of torque, getting from 0-62mph in as little as 7.3 seconds. Fuel economy is still good despite this extra power, with combined figures reaching 41.5–47.1 mpg. The highest powered 178bhp version can be found in the Esseesse and Competizione variants. It develops 250Nm of torque, taking you from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 140mph.

Features you can expect in an Abarth 595

Interior

Despite its compact dimensions, the Abarth 595 can seat four people in comfort. Like its Fiat 500 cousin, the rear seats are best suited to children and teens, although a pair of adults can be accommodated on short journeys.

From the moment you step into the Abarth 595 it’s clear you’re in a hot hatch. The front seats are bolstered to offer optimum support and the driver’s seat has a high position to give a clear view of the road. If you choose the Turismo trim, you’ll get more sporty touches, including leather trim, an aluminium gear knob and alloy pedals. Top-tier Competizione grades complete the racetrack feel with Abarth Corsa front sports seats and Alcantara and carbon fibre trim.

Infotainment is brought to your fingertips with a standard five-inch Uconnect display, which increases to seven inches on higher spec trims. The system comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port, making it easy to link up your smartphone. All but the base-level trim have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling you to use compatible apps from your mobile device via the central touchscreen.

Technology

The focus of the Abarth 595 is on style and performance. It comes with manual climate control as standard, enabling you to keep the cabin at the perfect temperature. It also features rear parking sensors to make manoeuvres easier. Upgrading to the Turismo trim brings convenience features such as automatic lights and wipers.

The top-spec Competizione is performance-focused and adds equipment designed to enhance your drive. This includes a Record Monza exhaust system, which creates a powerful sound as you accelerate thanks to Dual Mode technology and four tailpipes.

Safety

Having been developed from the Fiat 500, the Abarth 595 boasts a good amount of safety equipment. The 595 hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP independently, but in their 2021 test of the Fiat 500, the model scored four stars. Adult occupant protection received a rating of 76% and child occupant protection scored 80%. Parents can carry infants and toddlers safely too, thanks to two sets of ISOFIX child seat mounting points in the rear.

The Abarth 595 is kitted out with twin front, side and curtain airbags in addition to an airbag for the driver’s knees. There are also anti-whiplash headrests, stability control and traction control as standard. The Esseesse special edition and Competizione trim, which are the most powerful, come with larger front brakes to harness their speed.
