Aston Martin overview

Aston Martin is one of the most iconic automotive brands in the world. Steeped in history and luxury, Aston Martin (pronounced a.stuhn maa.tn) cars have been produced in England for more than a hundred years. Today, its supercars remain in high regard with experts and petrolheads alike. While they’re known worldwide for appearances in the James Bond franchise and their place in Formula 1 racing. Aston Martin cars have a reputation for their uncompromising quality and unmistakeable, stylish design.

Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford founded Aston Martin in 1913. The pair were collaborating on the sale and servicing of other cars, leading to the establishment of the company. The ‘Aston’ comes from cars raced by Lionel Martin on Aston Hill: a speed hill climb on public roads.

Unsatisfied with cars on the market, Martin and Bamford produced their first Aston Martin car – Coal Scuttle – at the outbreak of World War I: an event that put the brakes on further production until 1919. After the war, Martin and Bamford produced dozens of Aston Martin cars, predominantly for racing purposes, until 1924 when Dorothea, Lady Charnwood, bought the company.

Since then, Aston Martin has changed hands many times. David Brown Limited, a Huddersfield-based machinery manufacturer, bought the company in 1947. It is from him that many Aston Martin’s get their ‘DB’ name; this includes some of its most iconic models, including the DB5 that saw the brand’s James Bond debut in Goldfinger in 1964 and the iconic DB9.

Then, in 1972, Aston Martin was sold to Company Developments, an investment bank consortium in Birmingham. Subsequent owners included North American businessman Peter Sprague and English entrepreneur Victor Gauntlett.

In 1987, Ford Motor Company bought a 75% stake in Aston Martin. It purchased the remaining quarter soon after in 1990. A consortium bought the company in 2007, then it was floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018 as Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc. It remains a public company today and its vehicles are still British-made, with the Aston Martin headquarters located in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

In 2023, Aston Martin announced that its first electric vehicle will be the Valhalla supercar. Released in 2024, a series of ultra-luxury high performance electric vehicles will follow from 2026 onwards.

Popular Aston Martin models

The brand has become synomynous with supercars and luxury. It has produced some of the most iconic luxury vehicles in the world, and its appearance within the James Bond franchise has enhanced the company’s reputation.

While the DB5 was the first car to appear in the films, the DB9 and its DBS variant is the more modern Aston Martin model to feature heavily, with both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig driving the model throughout their James Bond tenures. It is one of the most popular Aston Martin models and is available in numerous forms, including a grand tourer and a convertible. It has even been used in motorsport racing following a conversion. The DB9 run also included a special GT 007 Bond Edition as a nod to the franchise that made its name.

One of the most sold Aston Martin models in recent years is the DBX SUV. While the brand isn’t as known for its larger models, the DBX SUV drove Aston Martin to almost double its sales in 2021, meeting the modern demand for larger, family-orientated vehicles.

Manufacturer awards

Aston Martin has won much acclaim in its more than one hundred years in production, thanks to its beautifully designed vehicles and quality both beneath the bonnet and inside its cabins.

In 2003, the brand received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, thanks to its outstanding contribution to international trade. More recently, The Sunday Times voted the DBX model the Best-Designed Car of the Year in 2020. It also won Top Gear’s Super-SUV of the Year also in the same year.
