The Audi Q5 is a medium-sized SUV, boasting a stylish interior cabin, distinctive outer design and top-level engine performance. As well as style, the Q5 has ample cabin and boot space too, making it well suited to families and drivers looking for a premium SUV.
Audi Q5 updates and facelifts
The Mk1 Q5 first launched in 2009, with a 2012 facelift adding new wraparound LED headlights and black gloss inserts around the air intakes. In 2017, the Mk2 was released, bringing new petrol hybrid engines to the range as well as new cabin technology for a safer and smarter drive.
The Q5’s size and crafted design means it closely rivals the BMW X3, Jaguar F-Pace and Volvo XC60. But with an exceptionally practical design, the Q5 is just as capable of cruising over long distances as it is hugging narrow roads, making it one of the best all-round models in its class.
Combining a premium-feeling cabin with adventurous design and sporty style, the Q5 is an excellent choice. The Q5’s range of trims also means there is ample choice when it comes to finding the exact specifications for your needs.
Practicality and style of the car
The Q5’s practicality means everyone enjoys a spacious and comfortable cabin. It measures 4,682mm long, 1,893mm wide and 1,662mm high – closely mirroring the size of the BMW X3. It is also longer than the Mercedes-Benz GLC’s length of 4,656mm. Compared to the Mk1, the Mk2’s wheelbase of 2,819mm is 10mm longer than the first generation, offering extra legroom.
When it comes to boot space, the Audi Q5 doesn’t disappoint. While exact measurements vary by age and trim, most used Audi Q5s for sale will have between 500 and 610 litres of boot space with the rear seats up – more than the Volvo XC60’s 483 litres. With the rear seats folded down, there are around 1,550 litres of space which is plenty for a whole family’s bags and suitcases.
The Q5 has excellent towing capability with a maximum braked towing capability of 2,400kg – enough for most trailers and caravans.
Inside the cabin, there’s comfort throughout. Across all five seats, there’s lots of leg, knee and headroom even for tall passengers. The electric controls on the driver’s seat make it easy to adjust your height, lean and lumbar support, so getting comfortable on long drives is no trouble. There are also two rear ISOFIX points in the rear for fitting child seats.
For storing handheld accessories, there is a compartment between the two front seats, deep door bins and a glovebox for securely storing drinks and mobile devices. Some used Audi Q5s also have USB sockets in the rear of the cabin for added passenger convenience.
Most used Audi Q5s will sit between insurance groups 25 to 43, with only the flagship Vorsprung trim falling into group 43. For road tax, entry-level trims such as the SE can qualify for the lower annual rate of £180 while the Vorsprung trim’s rate will be £560.
How a used Audi Q5 drives
The Q5’s engine performance puts it at an advantage compared to its rivals, with its petrol, diesel and hybrid engines all offering excellent efficiency and range. Many used Q5s will come with a 2.0-litre petrol engine – the 45 TFSI. It generates 262bhp, 37.7–39.2mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds. The 2.0-litre, 40 TDI diesel engine produces 201bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and achieves 41.5–44.8mpg.
Q5s manufactured after 2017 may come with a plug-in petrol hybrid engine. The 50 TFSI e plug-in is a 297bhp engine, featuring a 14.1kWh electric battery and a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. It has a combined quoted range of 156.9–188.3mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.
The 55 TFSI e plug-in pairs the same electric battery with a petrol engine and produces 365bhp. It has a quoted combined range of 166.2mpg and can do 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds. Both the 50 TFSI e and 55 TFSI e have an all-electric range of 39 miles – better than the BMW X3 xDrive30’s electric range of up to 34 miles. The Q5’s PHEV engines also have better mpg and electric range than the Jaguar F-Pace PHEV’s combined 130mpg and electric range of 33 miles.
Most used Q5s will feature Audi’s Tiptronic or S-Tronic transmission system. The Tiptronic system offers all the convenience of an automatic gearbox while allowing you to shift gears manually. When featured on a Q5, it often comes in the form of a six-speed transmission system. Other Q5s may feature the dual-clutch, direct-shift gearbox – the S-Tronic – which often comes as a seven-speed transmission system.

Features you can expect in an Audi Q5
On the road, the Q5’s size and masterful design give it a strong presence. Its sleek LED headlights, deep front grille and large air intakes all give the Q5 a sport-inspired design. You can also find extra styling with different trims. For example, the Sport trim adds a silver chrome grille surround and silver skid plates for additional contrast, while the S Line trim adds a honeycomb front grille and chrome strip across the diffuser.
Step inside the Q5 and you’ll be met with a high-quality interior where attention has been paid to the smallest details. Smooth leather runs across the dashboard and surfaces, with additional perforated leather on the multi-functional steering wheel for extra grip.
Even the buttons and dials are made with soft-touch materials, with plastic used sparingly to coat the surfaces away from the main dashboard. Most entry-level Q5 cabins feature a glossy black finish which contrasts against silver and white accents on the air conditioning grilles, buttons and steering wheel.
Depending on age, a used Audi Q5 for sale may feature Audi’s Virtual Cockpit display. The Virtual Cockpit system is a configurable digital readout showing key drive information including drive distance and mpg, as well as sat nav and sound controls. This screen is controlled by switches on the steering wheel, so the driver can focus on the road while easily and conveniently adjusting the Virtual Cockpit screen to see the information they need most.
Some used Q5s may also feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the centre console, which hosts an infotainment system. This system has a good range of connectivity which, depending on trim, will include Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This screen can also show sat nav and key information about the car’s performance for added convenience.
A used Audi Q5 is also a very safe choice, earning a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. It also received a 93% adult occupant safety score and a child safety rating of 86%. Depending on age and trim, a used Q5 will come with safety features including airbags, turn assist, active lane assist, rear-view camera, and adaptive cruise control for extra security.
