What is the BMW 1 Series M Sport?

With a high-quality interior and precise handling, the BMW 1 Series M Sport is available as a hatchback, coupé and convertible. Petrolheads and thrill-seekers will enjoy driving the BMW 1 Series as it offers a refined drive with plenty of grip and agility and a sporty exterior to match.

The model is popular and has firmly established itself in the compact segment. The BMW 1 Series is BMW’s smallest car, but it should not be underestimated. Powerful engines also have the option of all-wheel drive, helping it to perform better in a range of road conditions.

The BMW 1 Series M Sport competes with other premium cars such as the Audi A3 S line, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line Premium and the Cupra Leon VZ2. The BMW 1 Series M Sport is the flagship trim of the BMW 1 Series offering drivers a host of premium equipment and high-quality materials.

BMW 1 Series M Sport history

The BMW 1 Series was launched in 2004. Arriving after the production of the 3 Series, the 1 Series aimed to mirror the performance, rather than the look, of the 3 Series in the premium compact market.

The Mk2 was introduced in 2011, with BMW’s iconic kidney-shaped grille placed on the front bumper and other subtle design changes made to bring it in line with other popular BMW models.

In 2012, BMW announced that the M Sport trim package was coming to the BMW 1 Series. Named after the M performance cars produced by BMW’s Motorsport department, the M Sport trim level aims to emulate the style and performance of these cars on other BMW models.

Finally, in 2019, BMW launched the Mk3 BMW 1 Series, also updating the M Sport trim in the process. By 2019, BMW had sold almost 1.8 million units, cementing the car’s impressive reputation as a powerful luxury car with mass appeal.

The arrival of the Mk3 1 Series included both petrol and diesel options. One 1.5-litre petrol engine offers 138bhp, while three different diesel engines are also available with a range of power outputs. The Mk3 offers both automatic and manual transmission, and so can cater for both urban commuting and long-distance driving.

BMW’s M Sport range is aligned with its flagship M division, which represents each model’s pace and power. The M Sport option has been offered on numerous BMW vehicles as long ago as the 1970s, while the M division dates back a decade earlier.

The M Sport generally retains much of the M division’s sporty credentials beneath the bonnet without the top-entry price tag. However, since it sits towards the higher end of the trim options, the M Sport comes with a wealth of impressive features that enhance the driving experience through comfort and practicality.

Where does the BMW 1 Series M Sport sit in the range?

The BMW 1 Series M Sport is the flagship trim for the BMW 1 Series, sitting above the SE and Sport trims. It features plenty of equipment and design features. The high-end M Sport trim is one of the more popular trims with buyers because of its premium features and feel.

What features and equipment does the M Sport have?

Sitting at the higher end of the trim range, you can expect the BMW 1 Series M Sport to include a host of luxury features that create a premium experience for both drivers and passengers.

On the inside, you’ll find heated sports seats in the front upholstered with cloth and Sensatec faux-leather upholstery, an M Sport branded leather steering wheel and carbon fibre highlights throughout the cabin.

An advanced infotainment system includes an 8.8-inch dashboard touchscreen that adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. With the iDrive controller dial, access to the various in-car systems is made easy, while the addition of the Technology Pack includes park distance control, adaptive LED headlights, high beam assistant and, perhaps most impressively, a parking assistant that will park your 1 Series M Sport automatically.

To aid the performance of the vehicle, the BMW 1 Series M Sport includes sports suspension, and for manual cars, a short-shift gearbox is included for punchy gear changes.

On the exterior of the vehicle, there are plenty of M Sport branded features around the car that enhance its sporting prowess, including on the 18-inch alloy wheels. There is also a rear spoiler, splitters and other features that enhance the look of the vehicle as well as making it more aerodynamic.
