For used BMW iX cars, choose Arnold Clark

The BMW iX’s launch in June 2021 represented the manufacturer’s re-entry into the bespoke electric vehicle market, eight years on since the i3 supermini.

A luxury crossover SUV with a unique and head-turning aesthetic, the iX’s design is as impressive as its engineering. Its interior is as sleek as you’d expect from an innovative and modern BMW. Even among its luxury competitors like the Tesla Model X and Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron, it possesses style and features that put it up there with the best.

Heralded at the 2023 Auto Express awards as Large Company Car of the Year, the iX is exceptional as a commuter car, with smooth handling and an impressively economic range. With the power and spaciousness to compliment any drive, from the school run to a road trip, the BMW iX puts total luxury and comfort at the disposal of its driver and passengers.

There are a range of power outputs all with impressive numbers. At entry level, the iX exceeds 320bhp, with the top-of-the-range trim hitting an enormous 611bhp. With smooth handling and ample room for luggage or passengers, the iX is powerful, practical and stylish at the most premium level.

Practicality and style of the car

While it’s widely praised for its luxury feel, the BMW iX doesn’t forego practicality in favour of style. Instead, it offers the best of both worlds, standing out on the road and featuring state of the art technology, while leaving plenty of room in the cabin and the boot. Chunky door bins and a large glove box are available for all occupants to store essentials without causing a cluttered feel, and the addition of a wireless smartphone charging pad right below the iDrive controller is another handy touch.

The general spaciousness of the BMW iX is what gives it its reputation as a practical SUV though – as well as a luxurious one. At 4,953mm in length, it can easily offer ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. The generous amount of headroom gives the cabin an airy feel.

Boot space is also as impressive as you might expect from a large SUV. With the rear seats up, capacity comes in at 500 litres – more than its rival the Porsche Macan, at 488 litres. Arguably more impressive though, is the capacity once the rear seats are down in the iX. It’s here that the car’s height comes into its own, offering a huge 1,750 litres. This dwarfs competitors like the Mercedes-Benz EQC (1,460 litres), Jaguar I-Pace (1,453 litres) and Audi Q8 e-tron (1,637 litres).

With the credentials to make it a superior family car, or one to pack in the luggage for a weekend away, the BMW iX can compete at the very top of the luxury SUV market. A maximum towing capacity of 2,500kg making even large caravans easily manageable.

Running costs

As an upmarket option in the SUV market, the BMW iX sits between insurance groups 47 and 50. However, its EV credentials omit it from road tax entirely – and it is also exempt from charges when entering clean-air zones, low emission zones and ultra low emission zones.

How a used BMW iX drives

As an exclusively electric vehicle, the BMW iX comes with a range of electric motors, all of which are powerful and have an impressive range. Coming exclusively as a four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, it has three power outputs – xDrive40, xDrive50 and M60. Between these, drivers can choose the option that best suits their lifestyle. A car primarily used for the school run or plans to spend lots of time on long motorway drives for the daily commute.

The entry-level xDrive40 wields an impressive 326bhp, achieving 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and offering a range of 260 miles. The xDrive50 really ups the ante with 516bhp, doing 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds. Not only is this faster, but its larger battery boosts its range to an iX high of 380 miles. The most powerful of the lot, the M60, has a slightly reduced range of 340 miles, but this is due to its remarkable performance. Hitting 0-62 in 3.8 seconds, its acceleration surpasses a whole host of rivals including the Audi Q8 e-tron (4.4 seconds), Jaguar I-PACE (4.5 seconds) and Porsche Macan (4.3 seconds). With 611bhp, it’s no surprise that the iX M60 beats its competition for pure power.

The clever placement of its battery pack, low down in the car, creates a low centre of gravity, so it feels well balanced taking sharp bends and is as smooth on corners and bumpy roads as it is charging down the motorway. Adaptive regeneration also increases ride comfort, adjusting the level of engine braking to maximise stability. As well as its raw power, the BMW iX has premium design and engineering on its side, creating a crisp ride at all speeds, and on all surfaces.

Features you can expect to find in a BMW iX

Interior

The BMW iX’s ultra-modern exterior is matched by a high-tech, elegantly designed interior. Five occupants can easily fit inside the BMW iX, as there’s plenty of room in the rear for three. The heated seats are huge, too, and soft to touch. Suede-like materials decorate the dash and door cards, while ambient lighting adds to the luxurious feel of the cabin.

Rather than opting for touchscreen, BMW has retained its widely praised iDrive click wheel to navigate the two screens fitted on the dash. In doing so, the tech remains of the highest standard while keeping controls minimalist and the infotainment area uncluttered. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated into the system as standard, and loading times are lightning fast.

Technology

In keeping with the premium feel of the BMW iX’s interior, the integrated technology is impressive, practical and highly innovative. As well as more standard perks like cruise control, the BMW’s Active Driving Assistant Pro is integrated across all trims, offering drivers a wealth of autonomous aids such as it’s Parking Assistant, which can identify suitable parking spaces before automatically manoeuvring into one. Attentiveness Assistant is also a plus, monitoring driving inputs to check signs of fatigue and flag the need for a rest break if necessary.

Safety

Typical of a large, luxury SUV, the used BMW iX has extremely high safety credentials. Earning the full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, it has an adult occupant safety rating of 91%, while child occupant safety is 87%. All iX trims offer autonomous emergency braking and blind spot monitoring as standard. It also includes lane assist, a seatbelt reminder and a wealth of airbags in both the front and rear.

Trims available on the BMW iX

Released in 2021, the BMW iX comes with three trim options. Even at entry-level, the features are impressive, but as the trims rise, additional features enhance the car’s premium design.

BMW iX Sport

Kitted with 21-inch alloys, the entry-level Sport trim comes with a host of premium features as standard. Heated seats and LED lights enhance the driving experience both in terms of comfort and visibility, while the impressive dual-screen display is also a standard feature. A host of autonomous driving aids also come with the Sport, including Parking Assistant and Attentiveness Assistant. The Sport’s battery comes with a range of 260 miles.

BMW iX M Sport

Increasing the range to 380 miles, the M Sport upgrades the braking system and adds tinted windows in the rear of the iX for added luxury. A boost in power really emphasises the sporty feel, with the M Sport running at an impressive 516bhp.

BMW iX M60

The top-of-the-range used iX is the most powerful of the lot. It also includes laser headlights, adjustable air suspension and a booming Bowers and Wilkins stereo.
