For used BMW X6 cars, choose Arnold Clark

Sleek, elegantly designed and fun to drive, the BMW X6 is a masterful combination of practicality and style. The X6 was released in 2008, sporting the iconic BMW family aesthetic. The release of the Mk3 in 2020 increased interior space and ride quality. The Mk3 keeps the visuals aligned with the BMW family with its large kidney grille and distinctive headlights.

As a luxury SUV, the BMW X6 is just as comfortable on the school run as it is exploring off the beaten track. Perfect for families or adventurers, the X6 combines the practicality of the X5 with the comfort and style of a sporty coupé.

BMW X6 updates and facelifts

The BMW X6 has seen three upgrades since its 2008 release. First, a facelift in 2009 brought it into alignment with the Euro 5 emissions standards. The second generation came in 2014 and introduced a 450bhp petrol engine to the lineup. 2019's third generation increased the power potential to a 530bhp petrol engine, also introducing a hybrid diesel engine. 2023 brings the X6 into its fourth and most recent generation, keeping the visual aesthetic BMWs are known for, with large kidney grilles and angular front vents.

The X6 offers an impressive lineup of powerful petrol and diesel engines, with recent years introducing some MHEV options to choose from, too.

Practicality and style of the car

Based on its ever-practical X5 sister model, the BMW X6 retains many of the most practical aspects while injecting a sleeker, sportier aesthetic. Thanks to its roomy interior and five seats, a used BMW X6 can comfortably fit the whole family comfortably.

The X6 comes with a generous amount of boot space compared to other cars in its class. Mk1 BMW X6s come with 570 litres of boot space, increasing to 580 litres in the Mk2 and Mk3. This means the X6 has more space than competitors like the Range Rover Velar (558 litres) and Lexus RX (461 litres). Folding the rear seats flat in the Mk1 X6 finds you 1,450 litres of total storage space, again increasing in Mk2 and Mk3s to an impressive 1,525 litres of total storage space.

The BMW X6 can tow up to 3,500kg, perfect for caravans, trailers, horsebox or boat. By comparison, the Range Rover Velar can tow up to 2,500kg, while the Lexus RX tows up to 2,000kg.

Running costs

The cost of insuring your BMW X6 is about average for a luxury model. Mk2 BMW X6s fall between insurance groups 41 and 48. The powerful X6 M falls in group 50. With the Mk3, all trims but one are in group 50, with just the 30d Sport trim in group 49.

When it comes to paying road tax, the X6 is between bands G and M, from £240 to £645 annually for cars registered between 2011 and 2017. After the Road tax changed fromthe VAD system a X6 registered after April 2017 will cost £570 annually with vehicles worth over £40,000 incurring an additional rate.

How a used BMW X6 drives

In 2023's fourth generation, there are four engines to choose from in your BMW X6. For an SUV, the X6 is remarkably quick, easily outperforming sport saloons in terms of acceleration and speed. Quick and powerful, overtaking in the BMW X6 can be done confidently, and you won't struggle to pull away swiftly at junctions and traffic lights. Its eight-speed automatic gearbox is fluid and responsive, but there are paddles behind the steering wheel if you want to take control.

The diesel xDrive30d reaches a top speed of 143mph. Thanks to its 282bhp, it achieves 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds. Returning 34.9–35.3 mpg, the xDrive30d produces between 172 and 188g/km of CO2.

The xDrive40i is the petrol equivalent of the xDrive40d, producing 328bhp for a top speed of 155mph and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. This engine returns around 26.4-26.6mpg and produces over 200g/km of CO2.

If you're after more power, the M50 range will suit your needs. The M50d diesel engine produces 394bhp, taking you from 0-62mph in a staggering 5.2 seconds on the way to a top speed of 155mph. It can achieve around 34.4mpg.

Faster again is the petrol M50i. With an impressive 523bhp, this engine takes the large SUV from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. The M50i manages up to 25mpg and produces 265g/km of CO2.
