The BMW X7 is the German manufacturer’s flagship SUV, boasting a seven-seat layout and all the quality you’d expect from this prestige brand. Unveiled in 2018, it arrived in showrooms in 2019 and offered large families and those who prioritise space a luxurious, refined and technologically enhanced experience.

BMW X7 updates and facelifts

The vehicle’s striking aesthetic and practicality won it titles in the Luxury SUV category at the What Car? Awards in both 2020 and 2021. Against rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery, Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, it more than holds its own. At the top of the range sits the M50i variant (later replaced by the M60i), which delivers exceptional power and sportier styling. Petrol, diesel and mild hybrid options are also available, each providing the performance required to get seven occupants and a boot full of luggage around with ease.

Three trims are available with the BMW X7 – the luxury-focused Excellence, the sporty M Sport and the high-performance M50i/M60i. With all variants offering a host of standard features from the latest infotainment and online services to leather upholstery and four-zone climate control, this is an SUV that truly delivers in every respect.

The BMW X7 received a significant update in early 2022. This introduced tweaks to the exterior, including a split headlight arrangement, which aligned with the 7 Series and i7. Inside, the dash was completely revised to accommodate the brand’s curved infotainment display. The M50i variant was replaced by the M60i too, with all versions boasting 48-volt mild hybrid technology to cut emissions and improve efficiency.

Practicality and style of the car

As a large, seven-seat SUV, the BMW X7 is built to optimise practicality. Even with all seven seats in place, the model offers 326 litres of boot space, which is more than is provided by the Land Rover Discovery’s 258 litres and close to the Volvo XC90’s 397 litres. Fold the third-row seats of the X7 down with the touch of a button and there are 750 litres of space available. With the middle row folded too, a cavernous 2,120 litres are at your disposal. That comfortably beats even the 1,951 litres offered by the Volvo XC90. Not only is it large, the boot is also well shaped and boasts a split tailgate, making it easy to load everything from bikes and suitcases to items of furniture.

When it comes to towing, the BMW X7 is more than capable. Its maximum capacity depends on the vehicle’s engine, but it will pull a braked weight of between 2,200kg and 3,500kg – the latter being the maximum that can legally be towed behind a passenger car. Whether you’re bringing a horsebox, boat or twin-axle caravan on your trip, the X7 will haul it with ease.

Running costs

As you’d expect of a premium seven-seat SUV, the BMW X7 occupies group 50 out of 50 for insurance. As such, premiums match those of the top-end Audi Q7 variants and the Bentley Bentayga.

When it comes to road tax, the X7 incurs a surcharge of £390 per year due to its original list price of over £40,000. This fee is applied for the first five years of tax renewal, making the total payment £570 per year (including the annual flat tax rate of £180). Thereafter, tax drops to the standard £180 per year.

How a used BMW X7 drives

BMW offers a range of petrol and diesel options for the X7, alongside two mild hybrid options and the high-performance M60i engine. All BMW X7 variants are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive four-wheel drive system. This provides some additional capability on rough surfaces but is primarily designed to improve on-road stability and towing capability.

The petrol engine – the 40i – is a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged unit delivering 376bhp and 540Nm of torque. As part of the 2022 update, it was enhanced with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, which took the 0-62mph time down from 6.1 seconds to just 5.9 seconds. It also improved efficiency, with combined fuel economy reaching between 27.7 and 29.4mpg compared to the previous iteration’s 25mpg.

The 40d diesel is also a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged engine, and produces 335bhp and 720Nm of torque. This combination – alongside the 48-volt mild hybrid technology fitted in 2022 – ensures it’s almost as quick as its petrol counterpart, reaching 62mph from a standstill in 6.1 seconds. It also achieves 36.2mpg on the combined cycle, making it ideal for regular long-distance driving. The diesel engine without the MHEV system has a 0-62mph time of seven seconds and returns a combined efficiency of 32.8mpg.

The high-performance M60i replaced the M50i in 2022. Like its predecessor, it takes you from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, but thanks to mild hybrid technology, fuel economy has improved from 22.8mpg to 23.2mpg. The engine itself is a 4.4-litre V8 turbocharged petrol unit generating 523bhp and 750Nm of torque.

Features you can expect in a BMW X7

Interior

At 5.2 metres long and 2 metres wide, the BMW X7 is one of the most spacious cars on the market. It’s one of the few in its class that is a true seven-seater, able to accommodate adults in every row. Not only do occupants have lots of legroom, the SUV’s height also means there’s plenty of headroom. Three can sit abreast in the middle row too, thanks to the ample shoulder room. To elevate things further, the second row of seats slides forward and backward electronically, enabling passengers to find the optimal amount of legroom.

You may find a used X7 with a six-seat layout. This is an option that replaces the middle row with two captain’s chairs, providing a more luxurious experience for passengers. Storage is similarly impressive, with a wide glovebox, deep door bins and a generous cubby beneath the armrest that sits between the driver and front passenger.

In 2022, the BMW X7 received an interior refresh, so models produced thereafter have a minimalist dash and 14.9-inch touchscreen that operates the iDrive 8 system. The seats are upholstered in Merino leather as standard, although animal-free leatherette can be specified by the original buyer.

Technology

The BMW X7 is equipped with advanced technology to match its premium feel. The central touchscreen curves towards the driver and provides access to standard features such as DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and sat nav. It can be controlled with the rotary dial on the central console, by voice commands or with gestures. The iDrive 8 system itself is swift and responsive with high-definition graphics. It brings with it a suite of online and app-based services that can help with everything from finding the nearest parking space to choosing a restaurant for lunch.

If the vehicle is fitted with the Entertainment Pack, a rear touchscreen, DVD player and TV tuner are added, offering the highest level of entertainment for passengers. Driver assistance technology includes a driver attention monitor that detects signs of tiredness and advises you to take a break. In addition, a blind spot monitor detects cars in your blind spots and warns you of their presence with visual symbols.

Safety

There is no Euro NCAP rating for the BMW X7, but its closest sibling – the X5 – was given a full five stars in 2018. There can be little doubt the X7 is a safe vehicle given the number of protective measures on board.

Everything from multiple airbags and adaptive LED headlights to automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist come as standard. What’s more, both the middle and rear rows have ISOFIX mounting points for child seats.

BMW X7 Excellence

The luxury-focused Excellence trim offers a long list of features as standard. These include 21-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, aluminium exterior trim, a panoramic sunroof and Merino leather seats, which are electrically adjustable and heated. There’s also a memory function enabling the driver to easily find their perfect driving position after someone else has driven the car. The Excellence trim is also equipped with a power-opening tailgate, keyless entry and start, four-zone climate control and wireless smartphone charging. A Harmon Kardon audio system complements the 14.9-inch infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. For your convenience there’s a head-up display, and driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, air suspension, parking sensor and cameras.

BMW X7 M Sport

M Sport trim has a sportier feel, boasting 21-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, a sporty bumper design, more powerful brakes and gloss black Shadowline exterior trim. Inside is Fineline black wood and metal trim, an M Sport steering wheel and Alcantara headlining.

BMW X7 M60i

The high-performance M60i has 22-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels, aerodynamic M door mirrors and a matte black front grille. Inside are M seat belts, and performance enhancements include an M Sport exhaust and M sport differential.
