Launched in 2022, the Citroën C5 X seems to straddle several segments, from hatchback and saloon to SUV. As such, it has few direct rivals. The Škoda Superb Estate, Ford Mondeo and the Mazda 6 Tourer can be considered among the C5 X’s rivals thanks to its large-car practicality, but so could the Kia Sorento and , due to its SUV design cues.

What Citroën has done is offer buyers an alternative to SUVs. Not only does it offer the raised driving position and easy access of an SUV, but it also provides the sleek design of a saloon and the practicality of a hatchback. This combination had already earned the model critical acclaim by the end of 2022. Among its accolades was a CarWow Buy It award, the Best Large Family Car title in the Parkers New Car Awards 2023, and the Best Large Car award at the Women’s World Car of the Year Awards.

Engine options include two petrol units and one plug-in hybrid, all of which deliver a blend of impressive performance and efficiency. There are three trim levels to choose from too – Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus.

Citroën C5 X updates and facelifts

Since the C5 X launched in 2022, Citroën have added some slight updates including added safety technology.

Practicality and style of the car

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of the Citroën C5 X has a boot capacity of 485 litres. Opt for the petrol iteration and this increases to 545 litres. Either way, there’s plenty of room for your everyday needs. The rear seats fold down with the pull of a lever to accommodate even more luggage space when needed, offering 1,580 litres on the PHEV and 1,640 on the petrol version.

The Citroën C5 X makes a decent tow car too. The PHEV can pull a maximum braked weight of 1,350kg, and this increases to 1,450kg for petrol variants. That’s enough to tow a small caravan or trailer. It’s worth noting, however, that this model is a front-wheel drive car.

Running costs

The Citroën C5 X occupies groups 20–31 out of 50, depending on whether you choose a petrol or PVEV variant. The PHEV variant is more affordable to run than the Kia Sorento PHEV (30 – 34) and similar to the ŠKODA Superb iV in terms of insurance costs.

The C5 X has an annual road tax fee of £170 for the PHEV and £180 for the petrol version. Vehicles with an original list price of over £40,000, however, incur a £390 surcharge for the first five years from the first tax renewal.

How a used Citroën C5 X drives

There are two petrol engine choices offered with the Citroën C5 X. The entry-level option is a 1.2-litre PureTech 130 unit, which produces 128bhp and 230Nm of torque and is ideal for urban driving. With an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this variant can accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. It’s the most economical of the petrol engines too, returning a combined fuel economy of 41.4mpg. If you’re looking for more power and swifter acceleration, choose the 1.6-litre 178bhp option. Developing 250Nm of torque and paired with eight-speed automatic transmission, it takes you from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and is well suited to cruising at higher speeds. Efficiency remains strong, with this variant returning 38.3 mpg on the combined cycle.

For eco-friendly motoring, select the Citroën C5 X PHEV. Combining the 1.6-litre petrol engine mentioned above with a 12.4kW battery pack, it delivers a total of 222bhp and 250Nm of torque. That’s plenty to take you from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds. The battery will provide up to 38 miles of zero-emissions range, with overall efficiency reaching 236.2mpg. This is a perfect option for those who drive around town, but who also need a flexible long-distance cruiser.

Features you can expect to find in a Citroën C5 X

Interior

One of the strengths of the Citroën C5 X is its spacious cabin. There’s ample room for four adults to travel in comfort, with occupants of over six feet in height able to relax. The rear offers a generous amount of leg room, as well as space under the front seats for passengers to put their feet. There is also plenty of headroom, despite the sweeping roofline, allowing a fifth adult to be accommodated in the middle rear seat. The wide-opening doors make access is easy, particularly for parents trying to secure young children into their car seats.

There’s a distinct feeling of quality in the Citroën C5 X. Soft-touch materials abound, with cloth or leather trim on the doors depending on your chosen trim level. The Advanced Comfort seats are endowed with extra layers of padding to make them supremely supportive, providing a relaxing experience on the road. In terms of storage, there’s a generous glovebox and deep door bins, as well as a pair of cup holders between the front seats.

Entertainment is delivered via the My Citroën Drive Plus interface. This offers a ten-inch touchscreen on the entry-level Sense Plus trim and a 12-inch screen on Shine trim and above. Smartphone-style widgets and a customisable home screen make it simple to use. If you prefer, you can use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto instead, both of which come as standard. Connected 3D navigation is also offered on every trim.

Technology

All variants of the model are fitted with both front and rear parking sensors, ensuring you don’t inadvertently bump into low objects while manoeuvring. A reversing camera also comes as standard to improve visibility. Choose the top-spec Shine Plus trim, and this becomes a 360-degree camera, offering all-round visibility.

The mid-spec Shine variant adds to the tech suite with a head-up display, which projects driving data such as your speed and the current speed limit onto the windscreen. This allows you to view key information without taking your eyes off the road. You’ll also benefit from wireless phone charging. If you opt for the plug-in hybrid powertrain, you’ll get premium technology such as a custom interface to help you optimise your driving range and a dimming rear view mirror. This prevents you from being dazzled by the vehicle behind you during night-time drives.

Safety

Every Citroën C5 X comes with a wide variety of safety features, earning it a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2022. Adult and child occupant protection stands at 82% and 87% respectively and ISOFIX anchor points can be found on both outer rear seats to secure child seats. Standard measures include autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist. The C5 X also benefits from traffic sign recognition, which identifies speed limits and displays them in the instrument cluster. In addition, there’s the driver attention alert system, which reminds you to take a break if it detects signs of fatigue.

That’s not all – this safety-conscious model also has rear cross traffic Alert, which can detect cars, pedestrians and cyclists that are approaching from your left or right as you reverse. Visual and audible warnings are given, helping you to avoid a collision.

Technology includes front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, traffic Sign Recognition, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert.

Citroën C5 X Shine

Upgrade to Shine to add black Paloma leather and Nixon grey leather-effect upholstery, a heated steering wheel and subtle LED lighting on the door handles, front foot wells and instrument cluster.
