For used DS DS 5 cars, choose Arnold Clark

The DS 5 is a premium hatchback that combines stylish external design with interior luxury. Pitting itself against compact executives like the Volkswagen Passat and Audi A4, the model's head-turning looks ensure the DS 5 stands out on the roads. Its curb appeal is matched by a wealth of impressive and practical features, making it an exciting driving experience all round.

DS 5 updates and facelifts

Originally launched with the branding of its parent manufacturer, Citroën, the DS 5 was known as the Citroën DS 5 upon its UK release in 2012. But three years later, the DS 5 swapped the famed Citroën branding for its own DS badge, in keeping with the ‘Different Spirit’ that the DS branding stands for.

Launched in 2015, the DS 5 was in production for three years and received no facelifts throughout its lifetime. However, during this time, a single 1.6-litre petrol engine was made available alongside a 1.6-litre turbodiesel, and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel hybrid with four-wheel drive. It was sold with three trim levels: Elegance, Performance and Prestige.

DS is a more premium offering than a standard Citroën, and the DS 5 is no different. From launch, it was considered a classy ride that evoked its French roots with style and substance. A luxury family car, the DS 5 is a smooth motorway ride, comfortable coasting at high speeds – perfect for a group road trip. Similarly, its tweaked suspension (compared to the original Citroën DS 5) creates a more comfortable ride across urban terrain, so speed bumps and potholes are no problem on the daily commute or the school run.

Practicality and style of the car

The DS 5 is a step up from its Citroën predecessor, adding luxury throughout the cabin and a wealth of infotainment technology that set it apart as a competitive, upmarket hatchback. Open the doors and you’ll find a plush black interior with tasteful metal inserts throughout, as well as a stylish analogue clock as a nod to the carefully thought-out design from its French designers. Three glass sections of the roof give the interior an airy ‘cockpit’ feel, aided by the neat yet modern-looking central consoles. The stylish front seats have a huge variety of adjustments to offer the optimal driving experience.

The DS 5 is a practical car and owners will find 465 litres of boot space available. The DS 5 beats other premium hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf and BMW 1 Series, which both have 380 litres of boot space. With the rear seats folded down, 1,288 litres of space is available. Handily, those rear seats offer 60/40 splitting too, so drivers can fit a combination of rear passengers and luggage depending on your requirements.

Adding to the practicality of the DS 5 is its towing capability. With a maximum towing capacity of 1,500kg for the petrol and diesel options, the DS 5 can easily manage a medium-sized caravan.

Running costs

Road tax figures for the DS 5 are reasonable for its class. While it is a premium option, road tax is relatively low. Annual costs can start at as little as £10, rising to a maximum of £200 depending on engine and power. Insurance, meanwhile, is as you might expect for a premium hatchback, sit between groups 25 and 34.

How a used DS 5 drives

The DS 5 looks like a premium hatchback, and its engine options ensure it drives like one, too. A single petrol engine option comes in the form of a 1.6-litre engine. This is a less common model on the roads than its diesel or hybrid equivalent but is nevertheless an impressive option. Producing 126bhp, it has a six-speed automatic gearbox and can return up to 48mpg.

There’s a 1.6-litre diesel too, with 118bhp, as well as a 2.0-litre option which adds an extra 40bhp, along with an impressive 68mpg. A top-of-the-range diesel option, also a 2.0-litre, is the most powerful of the range, producing 178bhp and achieving 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds.

A hybrid option – the Hybrid4 – is also available, attached to the 2.0-litre diesel engine. Four-wheel drive is a notable addition here, with the rear wheels powered by an electric motor. With a range-topping acceleration speed, it can hit 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, helped by its six-gear ETG manual gearbox, and returns up to 86mpg.

Interior

With its roots firmly embedded in the Citroën family, the DS 5 has its parent manufacturer’s inherent practicality on its side. Up front, there’s ample space and headroom, creating an airy and comfortable feel in the cabin. This same feeling carries through to the rear, where you can easily fit two adult passengers – this despite the tapered roofline that gives the DS 5 its unique body design. Door bins and other storage spaces throughout are on hand to reduce any clutter in the DS 5’s cabin.

There’s a touchscreen infotainment system that allows for smartphone connectivity using Mirror Screen technology. Like the rest of the cabin, the system feels uncluttered thanks to its simple, tasteful dashboard with limited buttons. Optional features on higher-level trims include a full panoramic glass sunroof and fully leather interior.

Technology

As a premium hatchback option, the DS 5 comes with a range of impressive driver assist technology. Electronic stability control and hill start assist come as standard along with the helpful addition of cruise control.

Premium trim levels and optional extras open up a wealth of automated technology to aid drivers. A lane departure warning system comes with the mid-entry trim, as well as front parking sensors, and Xenon headlights. Other ‘Connect Packs’ include a mapping pack, that can locate the vehicle and information if the car is being loaned to another driver, and geolocation to protect against theft.

Safety

While the DS 5 itself hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP, its predecessor – the Citroën DS 5 – received the full five-star rating when it was tested in 2011, and this model was equipped with fewer safety features than the premium DS 5. It comes fitted with ISOFIX seats in the rear, to ensure the easy installation of child seats.
