Originally called the DS 7 Crossback, the DS 7 was launched in 2017 and was the first model to launch under DS as a standalone brand rather than as a division of Citroën. As a luxury SUV, the interior is upmarket and high-quality, with solid performance and a compelling range of engines to match. All of which helps it compete well with other SUVs, such as the Jaguar E-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Peugeot 3008.

DS 7 Crossback updates and facelifts

To set itself apart from the crowd, the DS 7 boasts a range of smart features and premium technologies. DS Connect Nav, for example, provides you with an intuitive sat nav system linked with real-time traffic and other sat nav systems such as TomTom, for clear and accessible navigation.

The DS 7 received a facelift in 2020, which gave it an updated exterior as well as new interior finishes too. On the body, Pixel LED Vision 3.0 technology, which adapts to your surroundings to give you the best visibility, was added to the LED headlights and daytime running lights. New material details and finishes were also added to the cabin, adding to its top-quality feel. Practicality and style of the car

The DS 7’s practical and spacious design makes it very well-suited to families. It has a vast 555-litre boot, which can be expanded up to 1,752 litres by folding down the rear seats. With the seats folded away, the boot has a flat loading bay which makes filling the car up with luggage easy and means you can take full advantage of the whole boot space.

Keeping the cabin tidy is no trouble thanks to the storage options found throughout the cabin. There is a large cubby in the centre console for handheld accessories with a second cubby next to the gear lever. Helping you get comfortable on long drives, there’s also a central armrest between the front seats. Door bins are deep enough to hold large drinks.

There is also plenty of headroom and legroom for both the rear and front seats to comfortably accommodate four adults. Even the middle rear seat is comfortable for a tall adult when needed.

In comparison to its rivals the DS 7 offers a much larger boot space. The Jaguar E-Pace, for example, has a 1,234-litre maximum capacity. Also, unlike other hybrid models, hybrid DS 7s do not reduce the boot space available as DS has managed to fit the battery needed for the hybrid engine elsewhere.

The DS 7 can tow between 1,200kg and 1,430kg, which is enough for a small trailer or caravan. The maximum tow capacity will depend on the engine that a used DS 7 has.

There are also three ISOFIX points on a DS 7 helping you easily attach child safety seats. Two of the ISOFIX points are in the rear seats and the other is in the front passenger seat.

Running costs

A used DS 7 for sale falls into insurance groups 26-42, which in comparison to other luxury SUVs, such as the Jaguar E-Pace (23 to 50) and Mercedes-Benz GLC (40 to 50) is about average. Road tax is between £180 to £570, which again is about average for a premium family SUV.

How a used DS 7 Crossback drives

There is plenty of choice within the DS 7 engine line-up. The petrol engines available are a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine with 128bhp, which achieves up to 46mpg, and a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine coming in either 178bhp or 222bhp, both achieving around 40mpg. The petrol engines come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which provides a smooth and refined driving experience.

When it comes to diesel engines, there is a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre BlueHDi option. These engines are capable of 128bhp and around 72.4mpg, and 178bhp and around 57.6mpg respectively. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard on diesel engines, but the smaller 1.5-litre engine can come with a manual gearbox in some used models.

There are also three hybrid engines in the DS 7 line-up, which all use a 1.6-litre petrol engine along with an electric motor powered by a 14.2kWh battery to put down impressive performance. On models manufactured after 2022, the DS 7’s hybrid engines can travel up to 43 miles on electric alone.

The E-tense 225 has a single electric motor combined with a petrol engine to put down 222bhp and 360Nm of torque. This engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds and comes with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Four-wheel drive hybrid versions, the E-tense 300 and E-tense 360, are also available. The E-tense 300 combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors on each axel for a combined 300bhp and 520Nm of torque. The E-tense 360 also has two electric motors along with a 1.6-litre petrol engine, which has a combined 355bhp and 520Nm of torque.

Hybrid engines come with eight-speed automatic transmission and have a fuel economy of around 235mpg. The E-tense 360 comes with a chassis change that allows these engines to push their performance further. Changes include lowered suspension and bigger brakes helping to improve the engine’s handling.

Choose the top-end La Premiere trim and you’ll also find a premium Focal Electra stereo system, with 14 speakers and a subwoofer for exceptional sound quality.

Safety

The DS 7 scored five stars in Euro NCAP’s crash tests, with a rating of 91% for adult protection and 87% for child protection. Compared to its rivals, the DS 7 scores better than the Peugeot 3008 which scored 86% and 85% on adult and child occupant protection respectively.

Safety features on a DS 7 include lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and driver fatigue monitoring that detects deviations in your driving and automatic emergency braking. Other safety features include cruise control, blind-spot detection, traffic sign recognition to alert you of local speed limits and speed cameras, as well as a range of sensors that help with parking in tight spaces.

On top-end trims, safety features can include DS Connected Pilot, which provides semi-autonomous driving, and DS Driver Assist, which is an adaptive cruise control that maintains a set distance with the car in front.
