Fiat overview

Fiat, pronounced ‘FEE-uht’, is one of the oldest automotive brands in the world. Established in Turin in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli, it has been recognised since its inception for the creativity of its designs and the talent of its engineers. Although best known for its city cars and superminis, Fiat has also manufactured railway engines, military vehicles, tractors and commercial vehicles. In 1971, the brand acquired Abarth, which has since become known as Fiat’s performance subsidiary, with models based on the iconic Fiat 500.

Today, Fiat remains in the Agnelli family, and its vehicles continue to epitomise the playful flair and passion that first made them popular. John Elkann, great-great-grandson of Giovanni Agnelli, chairs Stellantis, the owner of Fiat since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with French manufacturer PSA Group.

Fiat’s appeal lies in the quirky styling and spirited performance of its vehicles, which is now backed by a commitment to sustainability. The all-electric 500 has been critically acclaimed for its practicality and range, and since July 2022, the manufacturer has only sold hybrid and electric vehicles.

Popular Fiat models

Fiat’s most popular vehicle by far is the 500, which made its return to UK streets in 2008. With its retro charm, efficiency and low running costs, this city car was an immediate success, attracting first-time buyers, young drivers and urbanites. Its extensive range of personalisation options catered to owners’ desire to stand out, and its peppy performance made it fun to drive. The model exceeded 100,000 sales just four years after its relaunch. Today, the 500 is only available as a petrol mild hybrid or all-electric model.

As demand for SUV-style vehicles increased in the 2010s, Fiat introduced the 500x. Launched in April 2015, this compact crossover retains the iconic aesthetic of the 500, but improves practicality with a raised ride height, five-door body and larger interior space. A four-wheel-drive variant was initially offered, but the model now comes with front-wheel drive only and a choice of petrol engines.

Building on the appeal of the 500 hatchback, the Fiat 500C convertible adds a retractable fabric roof for open-air driving. This can be operated at speeds of up to 37mph and enhances the fun of your drive on a summer day. The model was released shortly after the hatch’s launch in 2008 and is now available with a mild hybrid petrol or electric powertrain.

The 500 may be Fiat’s most popular model, but the Panda demonstrates the brand’s capability when it comes to affordable practicality. First launched in 1980, then updated for 2003, the Panda entered its third generation in 2012. It is a dynamic, frugal and well-equipped vehicle, available in both front and four-wheel-drive guises.

The Fiat Tipo first arrived on UK roads in 1988 and was updated and relaunched in 2016. Available as a hatchback and estate, it’s well suited to family motoring and has the appeal of being a rare sight in Britain. This makes it attractive for those looking for something out of the mainstream. With plenty of space and comfort on offer, as well as efficient performance, it’s a well-rounded and stylish option.

Manufacturer award

As one of the world’s oldest manufacturers, Fiat has had time to perfect its craft. Its success is reflected in the number of awards it has received, both for its vehicles and its creativity and innovation. The all-electric Fiat 500 has been particularly highly praised by critics, being named Best Small Electric Car at the What Car? Awards in 2021, 2022 and 2023. At the 2023 ceremony, the 500C also took the title of Best Convertible for Value. Fiat Professional commercial vehicles have been acknowledged for their green credentials. In 2022, the E-Ducato was named Most Sustainable Van at the Sustainable Truck of the Year Awards, which took place at the Ecomondo exhibition in Italy.

October 2023 saw the brand receive an ADCI (Art Directors Club Italiano) Award for its ‘No Grey’ project, which highlighted Fiat’s strategic decision to cease production of grey cars. This accolade adds to a growing list of awards for creativity, which includes a 2019 Red Dot Design Award in the Design Concept category for its Fiat Centoventi concept.
