For used Fiat Punto cars, choose Arnold Clark

The practical supermini, the Fiat Punto, first hit the roads in 1993. Since then, it has spawned three generations and appeals to drivers looking for a compact city runaround. Designed in collaboration with General Motors, the Fiat Punto pairs the Vauxhall Corsa’s trusty hardware with reliable Fiat engines.

In addition to its use as an everyday car, the Fiat Punto has become popular with amateur rally drivers thanks to its affordable and widely available replacement parts. It's a strong option for drivers in the market for cars like the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa or Hyundai i10.

Fiat Punto updates and facelifts

Over the years, the former European Car of the Year Fiat Punto has been updated several times across its three generations and four facelifts. A range of variants emerged over the years like the power-focused GT and Sporting models, and the car has had a number of monikers during its history including the Grande Punto.

Though Fiat ceased production of the Punto in 2018, there are still lots of used Fiat Puntos on the market. The Mk3 Fiat Punto most drivers know today was introduced in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Since 2015, it has only been produced as a five-door supermini, though pre-2015 three-door cars are widely available.

For Mk3, post-2012 facelift Fiat Punto vehicles, you’ll find a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. For petrol, the most common engines are the 1.2 or 1.4-litre options. For diesel, there are two versions of the 1.3-litre Multijet engine. Most engines come with a five-speed manual or five-speed automaticgearbox.

Practicality and style of the car

For a compact car, the Fiat Punto performs well in terms of boot space. Its boot capacity is 275 litres with the rear seats up and 1,030 litres with them folded down in a 60/40 configuration. Its rivals have less space, with the Ford Fiesta offering 259 litres with the seats in place and 979 litres folded. The Punto also beats the Hyundai i10, which offers 252 litres of space with the seats up.

The Fiat Punto is capable of towing up to 1,000kg in braked weight if equipped with the 1.3-litre diesel engine. If you regularly tow a small trailer or lightweight caravan, it’s a practical option in the supermini class.

Running costs

The Fiat Punto sits at the lower end of the insurance groups, with all engines falling into groups 6to 19. It sits slightly lower than competitors like the Vauxhall Corsa, which sits between groups 10 and 23. More premium trims on the Punto will beat the Fiesta’s sportiest offerings, too, with the Ford Fiesta sitting between group 2and group 30.

Road tax for the Fiat Punto is also on the lower end. Some trims don’t accrue any road tax, such as those with the 0.9-litre TwinAir engine. Others trims cost between £20 (for pre-2017, 1.2-litre Pop trims) and £180 per year for the higher performance 1.4-litre engines. The Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i10 and Vauxhall Corsa all require owners to pay a standard £180 per year in road tax.

How a used Fiat Punto drives

The front-wheel drive Fiat Punto is available with a wide range of engines, but five are most common in the post-2012, Mk3 facelift version of the Punto.

There are three main petrol engines that you’ll most commonly find in a used Fiat Punto.

The smallest is the 0.9-litre Twin Air engine, which produces 83bhp and can get from 0-62mph in 12.3 seconds. It returns 67.3 mpg and emits 98g of CO2/km. The 1.2-litre engine, which has 68bhp and gets from 0-62mph in 13.9 seconds, returns 52.3 to 54.2mpg. It emits 123g of CO2/km.

If you’re looking for a sportier Fiat Punto, the flagship 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo is the fastest option. It produces 133bhp and can achieve 0-62mph in as little as 8.5 seconds. In terms of impact, it has a fuel economy of 49.6 to 50.4mpg and emits 129g of CO2/km.

In addition, you’ll find two diesel engines. The 1.3-litre Multijet’s 83bhp engine has 200Nm of torque and can get from 0-62mph in 13.1 seconds. It emits 95g of CO2/km and returns 78.5mpg. There’s also a 1.6-litre MultiJet engine, which uses its 120bhp to achieve 0-62mph in 9 seconds. Its emissions are 114g of CO2/km and it returns 64.2mpg.
