What is the Ford Kuga ST-Line?

Offering drivers a sporty and practical vehicle, the Ford Kuga ST-Line takes the family SUV and turns it into a performance vehicle. The Kuga ST-Line is based on the hot-hatch Ford Focus ST, adding a sporty styling kit and changes to the Kuga’s handling. The Ford Kuga also offers a spacious cabin and boot space. The model faces competition from the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, the Škoda Karoq Sportline and the Hyundai Tucson N-Line.

Ford Kuga ST-Line history

The Ford Kuga was launched in 2008. The Mk1 Ford Kuga was designed with European roads in mind, focusing on good manoeuvrability. It was available with either petrol or diesel engines as well as the option to have four-wheel drive. In 2012, the Mk2 was launched, which increased the length of the car by 82mm for greater cabin comfort. With a new exterior design, the Mk2 has more of an off-road look.

In 2016, Ford gave the Mk2 Ford Kuga a facelift. This also saw the introduction of the ST-Line trim following the success of the Ford Focus ST. The ST-Line trim, standing for Sports Technologies, added a sporty body kit to the Kuga as well as other features. Different coloured brake callipers and roof rails come as standard. The Mk2 Ford Kuga also saw some updates in the interior, including the addition of an eight-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Mk2 Ford Kuga ST-Line was offered with the turbocharged petrol and diesel engines available on the standard Kuga. These included 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engines or 1.5-litre diesel engines paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The 1.5T EcoBoost petrol engine has a top speed of 124mph and achieves 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds. The top speed of the Mk2 Ford Kuga ST-Line with a 2.0-litre Duratorq turbo diesel engine is 126mph with a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds.

Ford launched the Mk3 Ford Kuga in 2020, with the ST-Line continuing to be the sports version of the Ford Kuga. It comes with new technology and features, including a new engine lineup. This comprised of a 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, 1.5- and 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engines plus a 2.0-litre diesel mild hybrid, 2.5-litre petrol full hybrid and 2.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The exterior received a new aerodynamic design with the launch of the Mk3.

The Mk3 Ford Kuga ST-Line 2.0-litre diesel engine, has a top speed of 129mph and achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds.

Where does the Ford Kuga ST-Line sit in the range?

The ST-Line offers drivers a unique styling kit and equipment list that is performance-focused, giving the Kuga a premium look and feel.

The Ford Kuga ST-Line sits in the middle of the trim levels available for the Ford Kuga. Sitting above the Zetec and Titanium trim, with the former being the entry-level trim, the ST-Line sits below the ST-Line X Edition and the Vignale. For hybrid variants, the ST-Line is the entry-level trim.

What features and equipment does the Kuga ST-Line have?

Coming with a range of equipment and features, the Ford Kuga ST-Line is a good choice for buyers looking for a performance SUV that does not sacrifice practicality. The exterior of the vehicle receives sporty detailing, such as redesigned front and rear bumpers, ST-Line badging, a rear spoiler, black roof rails and red brake callipers. Alongside these details, Ford has included sports suspension to enhance the vehicle’s performance.

In the cabin, owners will be impressed with the quality of the build and materials used. The ST-Line badging continues on the interior, along with a pair of sports seats upholstered with partial Sensico and black cloth with contrasting red stitching in the front. The driver’s seat includes 10-way power adjustability. There is also a heated windscreen, allowing the windscreen to be cleared quickly in winter months and preventing it from fogging up. As a nod to its sporting prestige, the Kuga ST-Line boasts a flat bottom steering wheel with red stitching and alloy pedals.

In the cabin, the ST-Line offers a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 3 interface for intuitive voice control of SYNC 3’s connected features. With it, you can use simple commands to get directions with the built-in sat nav, play music, make calls and find fuel or recharging stations.

Opt for the PHEV powertrain and SYNC 3 comes with GEO Awareness, alerting you to switch to electric drive mode if you enter congestion or low-emissions zones.
