What is the Ford Kuga ST-Line X?

The Ford Kuga ST-Line X is a mid-size SUV with a focus on family motoring. Rivalling models such as the < href="https://www.arnoldclark.com/used-cars/volkswagen/tiguan/r-line">Volkswagen Tiguan R Line, Nissan Qashqai Tekna, SEAT Ateca Xperience and Peugeot 3008 Allure Premium, it is primarily designed for use on city streets and motorways, rather than off-road. The majority of sales have been of front-wheel drive variants, and its five-door, five-seat practicality make it ideal for those with active lifestyles and growing families.

‘ST’ stands for Sports Technologies, and the ST-Line X is inspired by the ST performance variants. This trim was introduced in 2020 as part of the third generation’s trim range. It included all of the standard features of the ST-Line trim while also adding in plenty of luxurious additions of its own, including larger wheels, revised front and rear styling on the exterior and an extensive range of drive assists to help keep you safe.

Ford Kuga ST-Line X history

The first Ford Kuga was released in 2008, at a time when family SUVs with an on-road focus were still a new idea. Competing with the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, it offered the practicality of SUV styling and the handling of a hatchback. It shared a platform with the Mk2 Ford Focus and was available with a five-door body style and two-wheel-drive setup. This made it ideal for those who wanted the increasingly popular SUV looks but didn’t necessarily need a vehicle for off-roading.

The Mk2 Kuga arrived in 2013, improving on the model’s interior space and luggage capacity. It also received a new engine lineup that was more efficient. Trim levels at launch included the original Zetec, Titanium and Titanium X. It received a facelift in 2016 that introduced the ST-Line – the forerunner of the ST-Line X.

With the arrival of the third generation in 2020, the ST-Line X was unveiled as a high-level trim on the model. Sitting above the ST-Line trim, which had also been retained on the Mk3, the ST-Line X boasts lots of exterior highlights, including larger wheels than entry-level trims in the range, a large rear spoiler, red brake callipers and signature ST-Line X badging around the bumpers.

All of the engines in the Ford Kuga’s range are available on the Ford Kuga ST-Line X, including petrol, diesel and hybrid units. The entry-level petrol engine is the 1.5-litre 150bhp petrol engine, which goes from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. In the diesel range, there is a 1.5-litre diesel unit that outputs 119bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 11.6 seconds.

The ST-Line X trim of the Mk3 Ford Kuga has a variety of sporty styling features that mark it out from the rest of the Kuga range. It has 19-inch, 15-spoke alloy wheels with a unique design, ST-Line X front scuff plates, a dark mesh upper grille and a large rear spoiler. Added practicality comes courtesy of the black roof rails and hands-free powered tailgate, which can be opened with a swish of the foot under the rear bumper.
