For used Hyundai I30 Fastback cars, choose Arnold Clark

Unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the performance-focused i30 N, the Hyundai i30 Fastback was designed as a sleek and stylish mix between a hatch and coupé. Taking many features from its multi-award-winning i30 predecessor, the i30 Fastback arrived on the market as an affordable alternative to many sports coupé cars.

Hyundai i30 Fastback updates and facelifts

The Hyundai i30 Fastback has a smooth slope from roof to tail and sits lower to the ground than the i30. This five-door car bridges the gap in the market between city hatches and compact saloons. While the Hyundai i30 Fastback is unique, it will appeal to drivers looking at hot hatchbacks with good performance like the Honda Civic, Škoda Octavia and even the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé.

Originally released in 2018, the Hyundai i30 Fastback comes in one five-door, five-seat option. In 2020, the i30 Fastback received a facelift. On the exterior, it was fitted with a new front bumper and a downturned, sporty grille. Narrower headlamps and refreshed taillights were added too. Inside, the facelift added a 10.25-inch infotainment system and 7-inch display set between the speedometer and rev counter.

The i30 Fastback was launched with two turbocharged petrol engine options and two turbocharged diesel engines. Since its 2020 facelift, the engine range has been streamlined to two petrol engines and the Fastback comes in one trim, the N Line.

Practicality and style of the car

Measuring in at 4,455mm long and 1,795mm wide, the i30 Fastback is 68mm longer than the Ford Focus ST-Line and 171mm longer than the Golf R-Line, meaning it can comfortably seat five and offer more boot space. Even with a low rear roofline, smaller adults and children will ride comfortably in the back.

The Hyundai i30 Fastback provides a good amount of storage space for everyday use. It offers 450 litres of boot space – 55 litres more than the standard i30 – and, with the rear seats folded down, can transport bulky items. There’s a hand ski hatch, allowing you to slide long, thin items in without folding the seats down altogether.

The i30 Fastback beats the Honda Civic, which has 420 litres of boot space, and closely rivals the Mercedes-Benz CLA’s 460 litres. The rear seats have a 40/60 split configuration, and with both down the i30 Fastback’s capacity increases to 1,351 litres – higher than the Škoda Octavia’s 1,209 litres.

If you’re planning on travelling with trailers or small caravans, the Hyundai i30 Fastback has a maximum braked towing weight of 1400kg.

Running costs

The Hyundai i30 Fastback is reasonable to insure. You’ll find the 1.0-litre engine vehicles in group 8, with more performance-focused engines like the 1.4-litre sitting in group 15. Its insurance costs are lower than its rivals. The Honda Civic sits in insurance groups 15 to 22, the Škoda Octavia between 13 and 23, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé sits much higher, between groups 23 and 39. Road tax for a Hyundai i30 Fastback costs £180 per year, which is the same as both the Octavia and the Civic.

How a used Hyundai i30 Fastback drives

Launched with two petrol and two diesel options, there’s a used Hyundai i30 Fastback for different types of drivers. If you’re looking for petrol, the 118bhp, 1.0-litre T-GDI three-cylinder is an efficient option. It achieves 51.4mpg and emits 125g/km of CO2, with a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds.

You’ll find a speedier 1.4-litre T-GDI four-cylinder option on the market too, which has 138bhp. It’s capable of returning 48.7mpg and emits 132g/km of CO2, with a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds. There are also two 1.6-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel engines available in pre-2020 cars. Choose between the 108bhp and faster 134bhp versions, which can achieve 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds.

The i30 Fastback’s petrol engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox. If you opt for diesel, you can choose between the manual gearbox or a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic.

Features you can expect in a Hyundai i30 Fastback

Interior

The i30 Fastback’s good looks continue inside. Stylish contrast seat stitching, metal pedals and a sports steering wheel add to the interior’s smart finish. There are a number of storage bins, including a handy centre console tray well-shaped for smartphones and door pockets with built-in large drinks holders. The centre console is deep, boosting the storage space further, and has wireless smartphone charging capabilities.

For easy navigation and safe communication on the go, there’s an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, or a 10.25-inch in post-2020 cars. Both versions have a built-in sat nav, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. The larger touchscreen has handy shortcut buttons, allowing you to quickly switch between navigation and entertainment.

Sitting 5mm closer to the road than the original i30 and with stiffer suspension, the i30 Fastback has a sportier feel. It’s comfortable, with electric lumbar adjustment in all i30 Fastbacks. Tall drivers and passengers will have plenty of room up front, while the back is spacious enough for three children or adults under six-feet tall. The Hyundai i30 Fastback is a great option for couples seeking a city runaround or young families who want a fun driving experience.

Technology

As standard, all i30 Fastbacks have a range of assistance features. You’ll find automatic emergency braking, lane-departure assistance and hill-start assist to keep you safe on the road. There’s also cross-traffic alert, which gives you an early warning if other vehicles cross your path. If you’re travelling on motorways, cruise control can help you keep a safe, even speed.

You can track your car’s performance on the 7-inch display, set between the analogue gauges. Here, information including the average fuel use and range before your next refuelling is displayed. Driving and parking are made easier by the Hyundai i30 Fastback’s front and rear parking sensors. There’s also a reversing camera to make backing into tight spots less stressful.

Safety

Although the Hyundai i30 Fastback has not been tested by Euro NCAP, the Hyundai i30, on which the Fastback is based, has a full five-star rating. This puts it above the Honda Civic’s four stars and in line with the Škoda Octavia’s five-star rating. The i30 Fastback achieved an adult occupant score of 88% and a child occupant score of 84%, closely matching the Octavia’s 89% adult occupant score and 84% child occupant score.

The i30 Fastback comes with safety features, including nine airbags positioned around the car. There are two ISOFIX child seat points in the rear, making the car perfect for families. The i30 Fastback also shares the original i30’s autonomous braking system, which can sense potential collisions and apply the car’s brakes before you have time to react.
