The Hyundai ix35 is a compact crossover SUV first released in 2009. In production until 2015 when it was renamed the Hyundai Tucson. The ix35 is a practical model and is well suited to anything from family drives to solo camping trips.
The ix35 is available with a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, which all offer good fuel economy. A hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) was also produced by the Korean manufacturer. The ix35 Fuel Cell offers class-leading fuel economy and zero exhaust emissions if you are looking for a more environmentally friendly engine.
The ix35 also has an attractive exterior. All of the model’s trims come with eye-catching LED headlights, body-coloured bumpers and a sculpted bonnet and bumper to help it stand out.
Offering good cabin space, reliability and running costs, the ix35’s competitors are the Nissan Qashqai, Škoda Yeti and Kia Sportage. The ix35 is available in four main trims, so there is a wide range of different model specifications to suit your needs.
Facelifts and updates on a used Hyundai ix35
The Hyundai ix35 was unveiled in 2009 as the new name of the Hyundai Tucson Mk2. Compared to the Tucson’s first generation, the ix35 has a wider range of petrol and diesel engines adding to the power and fuel efficiency of the model. It also has a wider range of in-built safety features and more comfortable interior materials.
In 2013, the ix35 received a facelift, which added new front and taillights. In 2015, the ix35 name was dropped and it became the Hyundai Tucson again.
Practicality of a used Hyundai ix35
The ix35 has a typical size for a subcompact crossover SUV. It has a height of 1,655mm, width of 1,820mm and length of 4,410mm which makes it 30mm taller than the Nissan Qashqai.
This size means the model offers a good amount of boot space with 591 litres available with all seats up. This is more than the Nissan Qashqai’s 504 litres, the Kia Sportage’s 540 litres and the Škoda Yeti’s 416. You can fold the rear seats down to create 1,436 litres of room.
You will also find an additional storage compartment under the false floor in the boot, as well as nets and hooks for keeping items upright. Throughout the cabin, there are large door bins for holding drinks, a glovebox for handheld accessories and a deep cubby under the front centre armrest.
The ix35 is well suited to carrying lots of passengers, with good leg and headroom offered throughout.
This model is a reliable towing option and can pull up to a maximum braked towing capacity of 1,200kg, which is enough for some small trailers.
Running costs
The ix35 offers reasonable running costs for a crossover SUV. Its insurance groups run from 14 to 22, which compares well to the Kia Sportage’s range of 15 to 26.
The model will usually incur an annual road tax between £180 and £365 depending on the engine that comes with your model. This is fairly average for the crossover SUV class.
How a used Hyundai ix35 drives
The ix35 has an engine choice of two petrol and two diesel engines. In the petrol range, there is an entry-level 1.5-litre engine, which produces 133bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.1 seconds and returns 44.1mpg when fitted with stop-start. Without, it achieves 41.5mpg. This engine is only available with front-wheel drive.
There is also a 2.0-litre, 161bhp engine which accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. It returns 37.7mpg and is available with two-wheel drive. Both petrol engines are available with a manual five-speed gearbox.
In the diesel range, there is a 1.7-litre turbocharged engine with 114bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds and returns 48.7–54.3mpg. This engine is paired with two-wheel drive only.
The 2.0-litre CRDi engine can produce either 134bhp or 181bhp. The former accelerates from 0-62mph in around 10 seconds and returns 50mpg when paired with a two-wheel drive. The 181bph option is only available in four-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic gearbox. It accelerates to 62mph in 9.8 seconds and returns up to 47.9–51.4mpg.
The ix35 Fuel Cell is powered by a 100kW hydrogen fuel cell, which is equivalent to 134bhp. Thanks to its 144-litre hydrogen tanks, it can achieve a 100mph top speed and quoted range of up to 369 miles.
