For used Hyundai KONA cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Hyundai Kona offers is a practical compact SUV that stands out on the market both for its looks and performance. Well-equipped with a suite of smart technology, it is available in petrol, diesel, hybrid or full-electric, ensuring there’s plenty of choice for drivers to find the right balance of fuel economy and performance.

Hyundai Kona updates and facelifts

Launched in 2017, the Hyundai Kona has received several facelifts. In 2019, Hyundai discontinued the range of diesel engines available for the Kona and introduced a hybrid model. In 2020, Hyundai made the decision to offer front-wheel drive only, having previously offered four-wheel drive. And in 2021, revisions were made to the model’s chassis and suspension to help enhance the car’s performance. The front and rear bumpers also received a subtle redesign and the LED lights were made slimmer.

The Kona N-line trim facelifts the design of the Kona giving it a sportier look, while the Kona Electric has a futuristic aesthetic reflecting its full-electric powertrain.

As a compact SUV, the Hyundai Kona has plenty of competition on the market, with rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Citroën C3 Aircross, Vauxhall Mokka, Ford Puma and SEAT Arona. However, its innovative, unique design and reliable performance help it to stand out in this crowded class.

Practicality and style of the car

The Hyundai Kona has a boot space of 374 litres, which can be expanded to a decently sized 1,156-litre boot when you fold the seats down flat. This is the same in the hybrid model. The boot’s design includes a shallow underfloor tray that can be used to keep valuables out of view or to store safety equipment in case of an emergency. There are also luggage hooks to prevent shopping bags from falling over in the boot. And on higher trim levels cargo nets can be included to pin down any loose items in the boot.

For extra storage, the Kona comes with roof rails as standard so you can easily add a roof box or a bike rack. And when it comes to transporting larger items, the Hyundai Kona can tow a maximum weight of between 1,200 to 1,600kg, depending on the engine, which is enough to tow a small trailer.

Running costs

A use Hyundai Kona will sit within insurance groups 8 to 20 which is about average for its class with the Nissan Juke and SEAT Arona falling into the same bracket. The road tax for a Hyundai Kona is between £170 to £180 a year.

This engine has a good fuel efficiency, returning around 44.1–47.1mpg, and is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Next is the 1.6-litre T-GDi petrol engine which can put down 195bhp, meaning it achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds. The 1.6-litre returns around 34.0–38.7mpg.

Available on the Kona N Line is the 2.0-litre T-GDi four-cylinder petrol engine, which achieves 0 to 62mph in just 5.5 seconds thanks to the engine output of up to 276bhp. This engine achieves a fuel economy of 33.2mpg.

On iterations before 2019, Konas can come with diesel engines. The diesel range consists of two versions of a 1.6-litre CRDi turbocharged diesel engine, which can output either 113bhp or 134bhp. These engines have good fuel efficiency, returning either between 55.4 and 56.5mpg, or 52.3 mpg respectively.

Hybrid and full-electric engines are also available. There is one hybrid engine available, a 1.6-litre T-GDi four-cylinder petrol engine paired to an electric motor with a combined 139bhp and 265Nm of torque. This engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 11 seconds and returns around 52.3–57.6mpg.

Features you can expect in a Hyundai Kona

The distinctive and unique design of the Kona helps it stand out on the road and amongst its rivals. The different coloured bumpers and bodywork create a striking appearance, and the Kona N Line gets a sporty and similarly striking look. The interior, while subtly changing between the Kona, Kona N Line and Kona Electric, is sleek and refined. Surfaces have a high-quality finish and the cabin has a smart, upmarket feel.

Interior

The Kona offers a good amount of legroom and headroom for passengers and all seats provide good comfort and support on long journeys. The driver sits slightly higher than on the SEAT Arona, for example, giving the driver a more commanding position and better visibility of the road. Its design also helps with visibility as the front windows are tall, and the pillars are thin.

Useful storage cubbies are located around the cabin to stow away personal items or entertainment devices. In the front, there is a good-sized glovebox, two cup holders and a large cubby hidden under the front armrest. There is also a cubby located behind the gear lever that, in some trims, features a wireless smartphone charger. In the rear, door bins are well-sized for drinks bottles, and storage nets can also feature on the back of the front seats to stow away children’s entertainment devices or other personal items. On the Ultimate trim, the rear seats have an armrest that can fold down from the rear middle seat.

Technology

In the centre of the dashboard there is the touchscreen infotainment display which comes in two sizes depending on the trim and age of Kona you go for. With the Kona’s entry-level SE Connect trim, an eight-inch screen is available, while on other trims and the Kona Electric, a 10.25-inch screen is available.

This screen comes with clear graphics and smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hybrid Hyundai Konas and the N Line trim feature Hyundai’s BlueLink app, which allows drivers to remotely adjust air conditioning as well as lock and unlock their car via their smartphone. An integrated satellite navigation system is also available for higher trim levels.

In iterations after 2018, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is available as standard, which replaces the analogue dials with a digital screen. On top-level trims, this is connected to a heads-up display which shows vital information such as speed and fuel level, so you can see your key drive information at a glance.

Safety

The Hyundai Kona scored a Euro NCAP rating of five stars and was awarded 87% and 85% on adult and child protection respectively. As of 2020, Hyundai Konas come with autonomous emergency braking as standard, as well as anti-lock brakes, a lane-keeping system, electronic stability control and a driver attention alert system which detects when the driver may be fatigued and sends an alert to take a break.

Some trims will also include blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, which is useful when reversing out of a parking space or driveway, and parking sensors and cameras.
