Jeep vehicles first went into production in 1941, in the midst of the Second World War. Lightweight and with a four-wheel drive setup, they soon became the primary vehicles of the U.S. Army and the Allies. They became more common worldwide when the owner, Willys-Overland, began making Civilian Jeep (CJ) models in 1945. The brand soon grew in popularity thanks to the functionality and remarkable off-road capability of its vehicles. Toledo Ohio has been the location of the headquarters since 1945 and remains there to this day.

The Jeep CJ saw 40 years of production. It's replacement was the Jeep Wrangler, that came to market in 1987. This go-anywhere model has since become a mainstay of the brand’s lineup. It attracted the attention of those requiring a vehicle that can handle the challenges of rough terrain. The launch coincided with the brand’s acquisition by the Chrysler Corporation (later Chrysler Group LLC) in the same year.

As the demand for comfortable, road-going SUVs increased, Jeep expanded and refined its offering. They introduced models such as the Cherokee, the subcompact Renegade and the Compass to the range. By the early 1990s the Jeep brand was legendary – particularly in the US. The Wrangler had appeared in several blockbusters movies. These included famous appearances in Back to the Future II and Jurassic Park. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Barak Obama are known for having owned Jeeps. President Joe Biden also spotted driving a hybrid Jeep Wrangler at the White House.

In 2014, Chrysler LLC merged with Fiat Group to form Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Under this ownership, the development of electrified vehicles began to accelerate. Revealed in 2020, the Jeep Renegade 4xe was their first plug-in hybrid. After FCA merged with France’s Groupe PSA to form Stellantis in 2021, more electric and hybrid options launched. By late 2023, Jeep offered all its models bar the Wrangler in electric or plug-in hybrid guise.

Today, Jeep vehicles remain instantly recognisable. This is thanks to the striking seven-bar grille and retro-inspired design cues. Some models, such as selected Wrangler variants, have even kept the option of removing the roof and doors for a truly versatile and rugged feel. Jeep’s reputation for producing terrain conquering vehicles is nothing short of legendary. It’s no surprise, then, that the manufacturer consistently wins awards in the off-road category. In 2021, both the Wrangler and Renegade found success at the 4x4 of the Year Awards. They received the Off-Road and Best Small SUV awards respectively. The Jeep Avenger showcased the brand’s commitment to electrification. It took the title of Best Small Car at the 2023 Autocar Awards and Electric Car of the Year at the 2023 TopGear Awards.
