For used Kia Carens cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Kia Carens is a compact SUV. It was first released in 1999. Balancing practicality and style, the Kia Carens is an excellent all-round car and is well suited to both city driving and country adventures. It is a competitor to other practical family carriers such as the Ford Grand C-MAX and Renault Grand Scenic.

When first launched, the model was only available as a five-seater MPV. But, with the launch of the second generation Carens in 2006, the model became available with five or seven seats. In the UK, seven seats come as standard.

Kia Carens updates and facelifts

Both its outer and inner features have been revised over its four generations and multiple facelifts, ensuring it remains an appealing option in the SUV market. The Mk1 Kia Carens was released in 1999 as a five-seat, five-door MPV. It received a facelift in 2002 which subtly revised its headlights and front grille.

The Mk2 became available in 2006 and was the first generation of Carens to come as a seven-seat model. It came with a minimalist exterior design, 16-inch alloy wheels and an infotainment system that supported MP3 connectivity.

In 2012, the third generation of Kia Carens was unveiled, boasting a longer and taller body and a revised set of petrol and diesel engines. Its facelift in 2016 added a new front grille, wheels, fascia and headlights. It expanded on the model’s range of engines, adding a powerful new four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine to the range.

In 2022, the Kia Carens Mk4 was released and is configured as a compact crossover SUV, unlike previous generations. It has an entirely revised outer design, sits higher off the ground and has larger dimensions. This means that the compact space for those sitting in the sixth and seventh seats were given greater room and comfort.

Practicality and style of the Kia Carens

The Kia Carens is one of the more compact models in its class. It has a standard boot space of 100 litres, which can be expanded up to 492 litres by folding down the rear-most seats. There is a false floor in the boot, beneath which is a secret storage compartment and stowaway parcel shelf. Fold all the seats flat, and the space increases to 1,650 litres.

The Carens is well-suited to a large number of passengers by design, so you can expect good head and leg room throughout. The rear two seats are a good option for children. Keeping the Kia Carens tidy is no trouble thanks to the deep door bins and cubbyholes throughout. There is a large centre bin and two smaller slots underneath the feet of the middle-row passengers. There are nets and trays on the back of the front two seats as well as cup holders when you fold down the middle row’s centre seat.

For family journeys, the Caren’s diesel engines are an excellent choice. This gives the car a maximum braked towing capacity of 1,500kg. When equipped with a petrol engine, the Carens can tow up to 1,250kg.

Running costs

The Kia Carens comes with attractive running costs and has an insurance range of between 12 and 17. This is good when compared to the Ford Grand C-MAX’s 10-27 range and the Renault Grand Scenic’s 14-24. This model also qualifies for an annual road tax of up to £395.

How a used Kia Carens drives

The Kia Carens is available with two CRDi diesel engines and a petrol option. An automatic gearbox is available on the higher-powered diesel engine.

In the petrol range, there is a 1.6-litre engine which generates 133bhp. It goes from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds with a top speed of 115mph. It returns 45.6mpg.

The 1.7-litre diesel engine is available in two formats. The first is a 114bhp option which goes from 0-62mph in 12.6 seconds while returning between 61.4 and 62.8mpg. This engine can also be configured to produce 134bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds and is the only engine in the Mk4 available with an automatic transmission.

Start/stop is included as standard on all engines and there are three drive settings which adjust the suspensions and performance of the car. These are Normal, Comfort and Sport.
