For used Kia Stinger cars, choose Arnold Clark

Stylish, sporty and offering a premium driving experience, the Kia Stinger represents the Korean brand’s first foray into the grand tourer segment in the UK market. Debuted in 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show, the Stinger set new performance standards for the manufacturer, which is best known for producing SUVs and hatchbacks, and has become a direct competitor to models such as the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.

Winning awards such as Best Performance Car in the UK Car of the Year Awards in 2018 and Sports Saloon of the Year in the Evo Car of the Year awards that same year, the Kia Stinger quickly confirmed its place in the market. Boasting a rear-wheel drivetrain and available with a four-door body, this powerhouse comes in three trim levels – GT-Line, GT-Line S and the range-topping GT S.

Although 2023 marked the end of production for this dynamic model, there are plenty available on the used market. These make an appealing choice for those seeking impressive performance teamed with practicality and sharp aesthetics.

Kia Stinger updates and facelifts

The Kia Stinger received a minor refresh in 2022, which introduced full LED lighting, new paint colours including Ascot Green and both 18 and 19-inch wheels. The interior received new premium stitching as well as a larger 10.25-inch centre touchscreen feature. Driver assist features were also added, such as forward collision avoidance with junction turning.

The Stinger comes with both petrol and diesel engine options, including a sporty 3.3-litre V6 petrol, which powers the range-topping GT S. From 2021 onwards, the GT S was the only option available.

Practicality and style of the car

Boot space is generous, providing 406 litres, and an electronically operated hatchback is available on GT-Line S and GT S variants. This is plenty of room for the weekly shop or a small pushchair. If you need more storage, simply flip the rear seats forward to expand the space to 1,114-litre cargo capacity – enough for a couple of suitcases.

Not only is the Stinger a good choice in terms of storage ability, its practicality also extends to towing. With the ability to pull a braked weight of up to 1,500kg, you can hook up a trailer or mid-size caravan with ease. In fact, the Stinger 2.0 T-GDi GT-Line was awarded Best Petrol Tow Car at The Tow Car Awards 2018, making it a top choice for those with towing needs.

Running costs

When it comes to insurance costs, each Stinger variant falls into a different insurance group. The lower-end trims come with the GT-Line diesel engine, which falls into group 32 of 50. The 2.0-litre petrol is group 34. Climb up the range to the GT-Line S trim and the respective ratings increase to groups 34 and 36. The range-topping GT S trim is group 41 due to its powerful V6 engine. This is reasonable compared with competitor models, with some BMW 4 Series Coupés being placed in group 50.

With regards to road tax, all used Stingers are charged the annual current flat rate of £180 a year. This is the same as the Audi 5 Sportback and much less than the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, which is £571 for variants from 2021 onwards.

How a used Kia Stinger drives

The Kia Stinger boasts an array of impressive engine options. The entry-level option is the 242bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol. This goes from 0-62mph in just 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 149mph. With smooth acceleration and light handling, motorway driving is effortless. It returns 29.4–29.7 mpg and CO2 emissions of 181g/km.

If it’s an economical car you’re looking for, the 197bhp 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel is the pick of the lineup, returning 40.9mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 147g/km of CO2. It can get from 0-62mph in just 7.3 seconds and offers in-gear flexibility for optimum performance. Both the petrol and diesel version come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and no manual option.

When it comes to speed, there’s no beating the GT S, the Stinger’s range-topping model. Under the bonnet you’ll discover a 361bhp 3.3-litre V6 petrol unit that can propel the car from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds. Reaching top speeds of 168mph, the GT S offers a smooth, responsive ride that’s perfect for long-distance cruising. It comes with a slick, eight-speed automatic gearbox for ultimate control.

Interior

The interior of the Kia Stinger is just as luxurious as you’d expect, seating five adults with ease or a family with children. There’s plenty of leg and headroom in the rear, with tall occupants able to travel in comfort. With a low-slung seating profile and ergonomic, contoured bucket seats in the front compartment, the driver can relax without losing forward visibility.

Premium features include full leather seat trim (Nappa leather on higher trims), heated front electric seats with memory foam and a well-organised dash. It’s easy to keep the cabin tidy too, thanks to storage nets on the front seat backs, cup holders integrated into the armrests and small door bins that are suitable for drinks bottles.

The update in 2022 brought the Stinger a larger 10.25-inch central touchscreen. This is joined by a new 7.0-inch digital display between the dials. The top two trims come with a 15-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, which delivers crystal clear audio. Bluetooth, DAB radio, satellite navigation, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto come as standard.

Technology

All good cars require great technology, and the Kia Stinger is no exception. A 360-degree camera helps to eliminate blind spots, making reversing and manoeuvring easier. In addition there are front and rear parking sensors to help you avoid bumping into low objects. There’s also a head-up display, which projects key driving data onto the windscreen, enabling you to view it without taking your eyes off the road. Driver assistance is a key part of modern motoring, and the Stinger offers plenty of systems to make journeys effortless. All three trims get lane-keeping assistance, for example, which prevents you from inadvertently straying from your lane on the motorway.

Safety

The Kia Stinger received the maximum five-star NCAP safety rating thanks to its long list of safety features. This includes an excellent 93% score for adult occupant protection, as well as an 81% score for child occupant protection. If you’re carrying youngsters, keeping them securely seated is simple. The Kia Stinger comes with ISOFIX mounting points in the two outer rear seats, with plastic guides that are easy to use and connect to.

The Stinger comes with a range of front, side and curtain airbags to help prevent injury in the event of a collision. It also features a vast array of active systems, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) and driver fatigue warning, which detects signs of tiredness and advises you to take a break when necessary.

The 2022 refresh added forward collision-avoidance assist with junction turning, helping you to avoid low-speed collisions. Safe exit warning was also installed to stop you from opening the car door into traffic. Blind spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross traffic avoidance assist, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and highway driving assist were also added.

They also boast a memory function so that if someone else drives the car you can reset your driving position easily. A head-up display, active cruise control, parking sensors, touchscreen functionality and keyless entry also come as standard.

Kia Stinger GT-Line S

Step up to the GT-Line S and enjoy striking additions such as a 360-degree camera for blind spot elimination, LED headlights, a sunroof, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. Technology includes a powered tailgate, wireless smartphone charging and a 15-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
