For used Kia Stonic cars, choose Arnold Clark

Launched in 2017, the Kia Stonic offers drivers a bold-looking and well-equipped compact SUV, all at a good value. Drivers will enjoy the spacious interior which provides high levels of comfort over long journeys, while the Stonic’s compact size means you still enjoy the dynamic drive of a supermini.

The Stonic competes well in the popular compact SUV market, rivalling the Citroën C3 Aircross, SEAT Arona, Nissan Juke and Hyundai Kona. The Kia Stonic offers drivers an good all-round performance within this category of cars.

Kia Stonic updates and facelifts

The Kia Stonic received a facelift in 2020, which added new LED headlights and on top trim levels, such as the GT-Line, the body kit had subtle design changes to the bumpers and rear spoiler that give it a sportier look.

Kia also refined the range of engines available with the Stonic in 2020, deciding to keep just the 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol engine. In 2021, Kia updated the badge design on the car to keep it up to date with its other models and made some subtle exterior changes as well.

Available in petrol and diesel engines, the Kia Stonic offers drivers a decent choice of engines for the best performance and fuel economy for their needs.

Practicality and style of the car

The Stonic comes with a 352-litre boot that can be expanded up to 1,155 litres, comparable with the Hyundai Kona’s 1,156 litres. The boot comes with a false floor that acts as a handy storage area for keeping valuables out of sight or for storing safety equipment. You can fold the rear seats down to create a flat loading bay, and with the Stonic’s class-leading wide boot opening, large items can easily be loaded and unloaded into the boot. There are also storage hooks on the sides of the boot which allow you to secure shopping bags.

Kia Stonics can also come with roof rails, which can be fitted with roof boxes or racks for extra luggage storage and for transporting bikes. Two ISOFIX anchor points are located in the outermost rear seats which are used to securely install children’s car seats.

Running costs

The Kia Stonic falls into insurance groups 8 to 14 and has a yearly road tax of £180. The Stonic falls into a lower insurance group than its rivals such as the Nissan Juke (11 to 15) and the Citroën C3 Aircross (8 to 22), while road tax is average for compact SUVs. This makes the Kia Stonic a relatively affordable compact SUV to run.

How a used Kia Stonic drives

A used Kia Stonic comes with the option for either petrol or diesel engines. The petrol range consists of a 1.0-litre turbocharged T-GDi engine, which can put down either 99bhp or 118bhp. Both versions are available with either a manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox and can achieve 0 to 62mph in around 10 seconds. These engines are fuel efficient, returning between 46.3-51.4mpg.

There is also a petrol engine available with mild hybrid assistance, the 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol engine is paired with a 48V battery and starter generator to put down a combined 118bhp and 172Nm. This engine can come with manual or automatic transmission and achieves 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds. The 1.0-litre T-GDi engine with mild hybrid assistance is available on the GT-Line, GT-Line S and Connect trims.

Discontinued after 2020, the 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will still be available on some used Kia Stonic cars for sale. This can put down 98bhp, achieves 0 to 62mph in 12.2 seconds and has a fuel economy of around 49.6mpg.

The Stonic’s diesel engine was also discontinued in 2020. The 113bhp 1.6-litre CRDi engine could achieve 0 to 62mph in 10.5 seconds and had a superior fuel economy, returning between 67.3 and 70.6mpg.

Features you can expect in a Kia Stonic

interior

The interior of the Stonic offers drivers a smart, practical design and well-finished surfaces. The straightforward layout of controls on the dashboard makes it easy to use and navigate.

Located in the centre of the dashboard is an infotainment screen for onboard entertainment and navigation. On iterations after 2020, this screen comes on all trims as an eight-inch screen, but before 2020, the entry-level trim has a seven-inch screen whereas all other trim levels have an eight-inch screen. This system comes with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity, for accessing your own personal music library and contacts. You’ll also find a DAB radio and, on all but the entry-level trim, a built-in satellite navigation system.

When navigating the infotainment display you can either use the touchscreen or the handy shortcut buttons located below the screen. Air conditioning is controlled by a set of buttons below the infotainment screen for quick adjustment.

The Kia Stonic offers passengers a comfortable ride. The driver sits in a relaxed position in the cockpit and has plenty of seat adjustment options. In the rear there is enough space to accommodate three adults comfortably with good amounts of legroom and headroom available to all. On some trim levels, such as the Quantum, you’ll find heated seats and a heated steering wheel to help make winter mornings cosier.

Storage spaces around the Stonic’s cabin help to keep the interior tidy and provide handy spaces to stow personal items. In the front, there is a large seven-litre glovebox, two cup holders in the centre console and a storage space built into the central armrest.

There is also a tray in the front of the centre console where you can store smartphones or car keys. In the rear, there are two more cup holders and map pockets on the back of the front seats, which are useful for entertainment devices, books and other personal belongings for passengers. The door bins are also deep, offering enough space for water bottles and other items.

Technology

The Kia Stonic features a range of technologies to assist you when driving. These include hill-start assistance, stability control, lane-keeping assist, a reversing camera and parking sensors. The LED headlights with auto high beams, and LED fog lights, provide excellent illumination when driving at night or in adverse conditions. Other features can include blind-spot warning and cruise control.

Safety

The Kia Stonic achieved three stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, although cars equipped with the optional safety kit achieved a full five stars. For occupant protection scores, the Stonic scored 85% for adult protection and 84% for child protection, with the safety kit installed adult occupant protection rises to 93% with child protection remains the same.

In comparison to its rivals, the Kia Stonic, with the safety pack, has similar results as the Nissan Juke, which achieved 94% and 85% for adult and child protection, respectively. Even without the safety pack, the Kia Stonic competes well with rivals, such as the Citroen C3 Aircross which scored 85% and 82% for adult and child protection, respectively.

Safety features on a Kia Stonic include automatic emergency braking and six airbags located in key points for passenger and driver protection in the event of a collision. On higher trim levels, such as the GT-Line S, intelligent speed limit assist will warn drivers when they are exceeding speed limits by detecting traffic signs and local speed limits.
