What is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line?

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is the German manufacturer’s entry level model. A compact hatchback offering a premium experience, the AMG Line competes with models such as the Audi A3’s S Line and BMW 1 Series’ M Sport. AMG Line trims offer a sportier look and a more dynamic experience without the price tag of the full AMG model.

AMG stands for Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach. It’s named after the founders Aufrecht and Melcher, and Alfrecht’s birthplace, Grossaspach. The sub-brand was established in 1967 to develop race cars based on standard Mercedes-Benz models. It later grew to represent high-performance editions of the brand’s road cars.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line has a range of styling upgrades including exclusive alloy wheel designs and AMG Line badging. It also boasts a sportier drive thanks to lowered suspension. As one of the higher-specification trims, the AMG Line includes a range of advanced technologies. If you’re looking for a sporty yet practical five-door hatchback with all the luxuries of a premium vehicle, the A-Class AMG Line is a smart choice.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line history

AMG began in 1967, developing racing engines that quickly became popular. Their partnership with Daimler-Benz was cemented in 1990, enabling AMG products to be sold and maintained through the Mercedes-Benz global network. In 1993, the first jointly developed vehicle was unveiled: the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG.

Four years later, in 1997, the first Mercedes-Benz A-Class arrived on UK roads. Noted for its safety and its spacious cabin, it was an innovative first step into the compact hatchback segment. The second generation arrived in 2004, improving on the first by offering greater practicality, more advanced technology and the option of three or five-door body styles.

The A-Class hit its stride in 2012 when it was redesigned from the ground up, swapping the MPV-like stance for a more conventional appearance. Boasting a high-quality interior, economical engine options and the latest safety technology, it quickly impressed both motorists and critics.

It was with the Mk3 edition that the A45 AMG was launched. This variant offered breathtaking performance, taking just 4.6 seconds to achieve 0-62mph. By this time, AMG had been representing the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz performance for two decades. Equipped with powerful engines and precise handling, these vehicles offer the ultimate driving experience. They also boast a more athletic design aesthetic, setting them apart from the standard range.

In 2014 the AMG Sport trim line was announced, providing vehicles from Mercedes-Benz’s standard ranges with many of the visual cues of full AMG models, but without the performance upgrades. The first versions of this were launched in 2015. By 2018, when the Mk4 A-Class was launched, this trim had been renamed AMG Line.

The Mk4 Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line comes with a choice of petrol engines, including the A180 and A200. These have a 1.3-litre unit and mild hybrid technology to boost efficiency. Paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, they can take you from 0-62mph in 9.2 and 8.2 seconds respectively. Diesel engines include the A180 d, A220 d and A200 d. In 2023 the former two were dropped and only the A 200 d retained. This produces 148bhp and achieves 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds.

There’s also a plug-in hybrid – the A 250 e – which combines the 1.3-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 215bhp. Capable of a 51-mile all-electric range, this variant can reach 62mph in just 6.6 seconds.

Where does the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line sit in the range?

The AMG Line trim sits at the top of the A-Class range. However, there are variations on the trim which refer to packages of extra features. The core trim is named AMG Line Executive, with AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus adding a selection of advanced technologies.

Premium offers features such as augmented reality for navigation, blind spot assist and an advanced sound system. Premium Plus adds a driver’s seat with memory function, a head-up display and a panoramic sliding sunroof.

What features and equipment does the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line have?

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line offers a luxurious experience and premium styling features. The core trim, AMG Line Executive, offers 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with adaptive high beam assist and AMG body kit. Inside, the trim level boasts sports seats with ARTICO man-made leather and microfibre upholstery.

The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa leather with contrast stitching, and there are aluminium accents adorning the centre console and door. You’ll also get a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with smartphone integration. Technology and performance highlights include a sports braking system for greater control over the car’s power, as well as cruise control and traction control.
