The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé is a model that almost defies categorisation, with its unique blend of SUV capability and coupé aesthetics. The model competes against some of the biggest names in the industry such as the Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Range Rover Sport.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé updates and facelifts

Style and luxury are at the forefront of this eye-catching model, which first arrived in 2015. Blessed with the engineering and design prowess associated with all Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the GLE Coupé has a compelling silhouette thanks to its sloping roofline. It also offers a selection of powerful engines, ranging from the 3.0-litre diesel unit to the 5.5-litre V8 petrol on the high-performance AMG edition.

The SUV’s dominant presence helped it win Auto Trader’s Best New Car award in 2020. This second-generation model was released in 2019 and built on the original’s sophisticated design. Larger than its predecessor, it offered even more interior space and a bigger boot. It also featured an upgraded MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system. This time, two diesel engines were on offer alongside the high-powered petrol unit available on the AMG.

With a focus on style, comfort, and luxury, every trim level on offer in the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé range guarantees plenty of cutting-edge features, from the latest in safety innovation to engaging infotainment systems and connectivity.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé was given a facelift in 2023. A major change for the model was the addition of hybrid technology to every engine. The GLE 450 petrol and both diesel units were endowed with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, making them more efficient. The two plug-in hybrids also received an update, offering an all-electric range of up to 68 miles. Other changes included some exterior design tweaks, fresh upholstery choices and an improved MBUX infotainment system.

Practicality and style of the car

This five-seat model offers plenty of interior space, with both the front and rear providing ample legroom. The rear is best suited to passengers under six-foot due to the characteristic sloping roofline.

Choose a Mk1 GLE Coupé, manufactured between 2015 and 2019, and you’ll have 650 litres of boot space at your disposal. Fold down the rear seats and there’s an impressive 1,720 litres available. The Mk2 (2019 onwards) improves on this, offering a 655-litre volume with all seats in place. That’s more than enough room for shopping, suitcases or a pushchair. It’s also greater than the space provided by the Audi Q8, BMW X6, and Porsche Cayenne Coupé. With the 40/20/40 split rear seats folded down, 1,790 litres of space becomes available, enabling you to transport bulky or awkwardly shaped items with ease.

With a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé can tow a large caravan, a boat or a horsebox.

Running costs

As a luxurious SUV that offers some of the finest quality around, the GLE Coupé occupies groups 49-50 out of 50 for insurance. This matches the premiums for rivals such as the BMW X6 and Audi Q8.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé’s original list price of over £40,000 means that for the first five years of road tax renewal, you’ll pay £560 or £570 depending on engine type. Thereafter, the fee drops to £170 per year for hybrid variants and £180 for petrol or diesel options.
