For used Mitsubishi ASX cars, choose Arnold Clark

A crossover typical of the manufacturer’s focus on style and substance, the Mitsubishi ASX has been a mainstay in the growing SUV market. Launched in 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX was one of the first SUVs around. The ASX still holds up today against its modern competitors.

Plenty of boot space and off-road prowess have ensured that the ASX has remained a popular option in the crossover market. Its numerous facelifts have kept it up to date with modern tech and aesthetics. Available in petrol and diesel and with numerous engines, there are plenty of options to choose the right used Mitsubishi ASX for you.

Mitsubishi ASX updates and facelifts

The Mitsubishi ASX launched on UK soil in 2010 as an attractive alternative to larger SUVs or smaller hatchbacks. A facelift in 2015 saw Mitsubishi improve its engine options, delivering better fuel economy and lower emissions.

An additional facelift in 2019 brought the ASX right up to date, with premium additions like a high-tech infotainment system, heated seats and cruise control, as well as a reversing parking camera, all coming as standard.

Practicality and style of the car

The Mitsubishi ASX is designed with practicality in mind. High ceilings and an airy interior offer plenty of space for occupants, while the boot is typically large for a car of the ASX’s size. The boot has a capacity of 419 litres, putting it in a similar ballpark to crossover competitors like the Honda HR-V and Dacia Duster. Meanwhile, folding the rear seats down flat increases this number to an impressive 1,193 litres.

An added bonus is the extra 30 litres of storage space available beneath the boot floor, allowing drivers and passengers to pack extra bags. The broad tailgate and low lip are particularly helpful when loading in heavy luggage, and if you need to fit in a passenger in the back as well, then a 60/40 split for the back seats lets you do both.

With the size and weight of a crossover firmly on its side, a used Mitsubishi ASX brings plenty of towing power to the table, adding to its overall practicality. It has a towing capacity of 1,300kg – significantly more than some crossover rivals including the Ford Puma (1,100kg) and the Peugeot 2008 (1,200kg).

Running costs

Despite its size, a used Mitsubishi ASX is surprisingly economical in terms of its running costs. These costs will vary depending on the manufacturing year since the facelifts have altered the engine options.

Insurance groups for the ASX range between 15 and 25. Road tax can start at as little as £35 per year, rising to £240 depending on its power.

How a used Mitsubishi ASX drives

Since its launch in 2010, Mitsubishi ASX has seen numerous iterations beneath the bonnet. Initially, it was released with a 1.6-litre petrol engine, that could run up to 48.7mpg, and a 1.8-litre diesel, which offered an increased 55.4mpg and came as a four-wheel drive. The latter really broke the crossover mould, since the majority of small SUVs don’t offer an out-and-out four-wheel drive option.

A facelift in 2015 added a 2.2-litre diesel engine option to the lineup. This iteration was also a four-wheel drive, and the upgraded engine packed more punch despite its automatic gearbox. The 1.6-litre petrol engine remained, offering 112 bhp, while the 2.2-litre diesel does an impressive 148bhp, along with 47.8mpg making this iteration particularly effective for towing.

Mitsubishi trimmed down the engine options upon the arrival of the ASX’s 2019 facelift, though. With just a 2.0-litre petrol option, returning 37.7mpg available, you can choose from a five-speed manual gearbox that comes as a front-wheel drive or an automatic transmission version that’s a four-wheel drive. The former is faster, hitting 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds and with a fuel efficiency of 34.4mpg. The latter is superior as an off-roader – another unique offering for a small SUV.

What all the ASX’s iterations have in common is their versatility on the roads. Its controlled body roll makes it comfortable on country roads, while firm suspension is helpful for urban driving. So, whether you’re packing the family in for a camping trip in the sticks, or are heading into town for your daily commute, the used ASX keeps things smooth and comfortable.

Features you can expect in a Mitsubishi ASX

Interior

A spacious cabin allows for plenty of legroom and headroom, so you can comfortably fit five occupants into a used ASX. Throughout its lifespan, it has ensured there are plenty of storage spaces including cupholders and door buckets. The whole interior feels airy.

The initial launch of the ASX included a classy, dark dashboard and matching upholstery, as well as an infotainment system that was ahead of its time in 2010. Its facelifts brought more exciting and useful features though, which cemented its reputation as a practical family car. The 2019 version especially brought the ASX into the ultra-modern mould of its competitors; with the addition of its flagship MMCS – Mitsubishi Multi Communications System. The infotainment section is easy to use. Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher trim levels, it also offers TomTom sat nav mapping.

Technology

Initially coming with perks like air conditioning and DAB radio upon its 2010 launch, various facelifts have continued to add necessities and luxuries to the ASX’s list of features. In 2015, mid-spec models and above were fitted with climate control, keyless start and rear parking sensors.

Fast-forward to 2019, and the used Mitsubishi added a host of equipment even at entry level. LED headlights boosted nighttime visibility, while the 2015 version’s parking sensors were upgraded to a rear-view camera. Cruise control and heated front seats were also added to the entry-level trim of the 2019 version.

Safety

The Mitsubishi ASX has very high safety credentials and it scored the full five stars for safety from Euro NCAP when it launched. An adult occupant safety rating of 86% and a child occupant rating of 78% add to its high safety rating.

Through its various iterations, the ASX has continued to load up with safety features that will help put drivers’ minds at rest. Brake assist and seven airbags – including one for drivers’ knees – come as standard post-2019, along with hill start assist and automatic emergency stop signalling. Packing the kids in for a weekend away is easy too, with ISOFIX points for child seats on the two outer rear seats. The top-entry trim also includes blind spot warning and a rear cross-traffic alert.

Trims available on the Mitsubishi ASX

Mitsubishi ASX Dynamic

18-inch alloy wheels come as standard on the entry-level trim for the ASX’s 2019 facelift. Mitsubishi certainly doesn’t skimp on other premium features either, with heated front seats, climate control and a reversing camera coming as standard. Plus, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is the centrepiece of the dashboard

Mitsubishi ASX Exceed

Four-wheel drive is available with the top-entry Exceed trim, which comes with an automatic gearbox. Plus, as part of the premium package you can expect a fully integrated sat nav system, a host of innovative safety features like rear cross-traffic alert, and to top it off a classy glass panoramic sunroof.
