Peugeot overview

Peugeot is a well-known manufacturer founded in Montbéliard, France. Initially a family-run enterprise beginning in 1810, Peugeot began construction of its first combustion engine in 1890, making it one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world.

Pronounced PUHzhow in English, Peugeot is today one of the most celebrated and widely known car manufacturers. Known for its reliability, safety, practicality and class-leading technology, Peugeot’s range spans value and premium models, making it an attractive option for a wide range of different drivers.

Popular Peugeot models

The Peugeot 208 – a supermini first revealed in 2012 – is another of the brand’s most popular models. In 2022, the Peugeot 208 became the best-selling car in Europe with 208,816 new registrations. This ended the Volkswagen Golf’s 15 consecutive years of being the top-selling model. Solidifying its reputation further, the 208 also won European Car of the Year in 2020. The all-electric Peugeot e-208 was unveiled in 2019. Powered by 50kWh battery, this model won ‘Best Electric Car’ at Britain’s Best Car Awards in 2020 and was the best-selling all-electric supermini in Europe in 2022.

The Peugeot 2008 is a subcompact crossover SUV revealed in 2013. Stylish and practical, the 2008’s range of efficient petrol and diesel engines give it exceptional fuel economy. With the addition of an all-electric engine following soon after its launch, the Peugeot 2008 has a well-earned reputation as one of the brand’s most popular SUVs. Cementing its status, the Peugeot 2008 won ‘Best Compact SUV’ at the Fleet Awards in 2020 and was the second best-selling car in Europe in February 2020 behind the Peugeot 208.

The Peugeot 3008 is a mid-size SUV that sits in the middle of the company’s SUV line-up. It was released in 2007 with 1.2 and 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines with the world’s first diesel hybrid edition of the model, the HYbrid4, following in 2011. It is a multi award-winning model and has been crowned What Car?’s Car of the Year in 2010, AutoTrader’s New Car of the Year in 2019 and CarBuyer’s Best Medium SUV in the same year. Demonstrating its popularity further, the one millionth unit was sold in 2021.

The small family car, the Peugeot 308, was released in 2007 and won European Car of the Year in 2014 thanks to its combination of practicality, superb fuel efficiency and value. It was initially available with a selection of highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. But with the arrival of the third-generation model in 2021, a hybrid drivetrain was added. An all-electric version of the Peugeot 308 has also been released, with this electric drivetrain offering drivers a single charge range of up to 248 miles.

The Peugeot 5008 is a versatile SUV that comes as either a five or seven-seat model. Initially released with a selection of petrol and diesel engines ranging from the entry-level 1.2-litre petrol to a 1.5-litre diesel unit, a hybrid drivetrain was added soon after. This engine is a 1.2-litre petrol hybrid. When first launched in 2009, it was a mid-size MPV and won MPV of the Year in What Car?’s 2010 awards. Reissued as a crossover SUV in 2017, it won Large SUV of the Year in both 2018 and 2019.

Manufacturer awards

Reflecting its continuous innovation and exceptional design, Peugeot has won many different awards over the years, including six European Car of the Year awards. Recognising the brand’s commitment to sustainable innovation and low-emission vehicles, Peugeot also won Green Fleet Manufacturer of the Year in 2011 at the Fleet News Awards.

Peugeot has been widely commended for its steps to introduce low-emission vehicles throughout its range. Its first plug-in hybrid was the 3008 HYbrid4, released in 2011. This model was powered by a diesel engine and an electric motor and was the first diesel-electric hybrid car in the world. Peugeot’s first all-electric model, the award-winning Peugeot iOn, was revealed in 2013. Already boasting a wide selection of efficient models, Peugeot has released hybrid and all-electric versions of many vehicles in its range, reflecting its confidence in sustainable travel.

Peugeot manufacturing is known for its technological innovation and overall practicality. Peugeot’s cutting-edge infotainment system, i-Cockpit, won What Car?’s 2017 Technology Award thanks to its easy-to-use system and touchscreen. Peugeot engines are also known for their excellent fuel economy. The company’s PureTech engines are known for combining good performance with some of the best fuel economy in the market. For this reason, it was crowned Engine of the Year in its category in 2015, 2016 and 2017 at the International Engine of the Year Awards.
