For used Porsche Cayenne cars, choose Arnold Clark

With the dimensions of an SUV and performance that rivals many sports cars, the Porsche Cayenne is both practical and thrilling to drive.

This luxury crossover SUV was launched in 2002 and was Porsche’s first car with a V8 engine since 1995. The Cayenne quickly earned a strong reputation for its handling and powerful engines, packaged in a car that’s great for families. It has picked up over 17 awards across its second and third generations, including Car and Driver Editor’s Choice.

The Porsche Cayenne’s rivals in this class include the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7, along with supercars like the Maserati Levante and Lamborghini Urus.

Porsche Cayenne updates and facelifts

The five-door Porsche Cayenne has undergone a number of updates during its history. Its second generation was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, which shaved 250kg off the car’s weight and redesigned the interior in the style of the Porsche Panamera.

The first plug-in hybrid Porsche Cayenne was released in 2014. It came alongside a facelift, which restyled the bonnet and wheel arches and introduced efficiency-boosting airblades to increase air intake.

The Mk3 of the Porsche Cayenne arrived in 2018, introducing a curvier body style, lower roofline and a further reduction to the car’s weight. Two new hybrid versions were introduced, too: the E-Hybrid and the Turbo S E Hybrid. A facelift for the 2024 model year was announced in 2023.

The Mk3 Porsche Cayenne is available with six petrol or plug-in hybrid engines, which are specific to its trim levels. They range from the 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 found in the base trim Cayenne to the 4.0-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine found in the Turbo trim.

Practicality and style of the car

A spacious boot comes as standard with the Porsche Cayenne. Non-hybrid Cayennes have 772 litres of capacity – much higher than the BMW X5’s 650 litres and the Mercedes-Benz GLE’s 630 litres. It even tops the Audi Q7, a large SUV that only manages 770 litres of space with its third row of seats down.

With the seats down in a 40/20/40 split, the Porsche Cayenne’s boot space increases to 1,710 litres. If you opt for a plug-in hybrid, the boot’s full capacity is 650 litres.

If you regularly tow heavy items, the Porsche Cayenne has impressive pulling power. It can tow up to 3,500kg in braked weight, meaning you can travel with everything from a large caravan to a trailer or horse box with ease.

Running costs

As a premium car, the Mk3 Porsche Cayenne sits in insurance groups 44 to 50 – at the upper end of the UK’s insurance groups. It's comparable to rivals such as the BMW X5, which sits in groups 43 to 50, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE, which is also in groups 44 to 50. Some engines of the Porsche Cayenne are more affordable to insure than the Maserati Levante, which sits in group 50 for all engines.

Road tax costs between £560 to £570 per year due to the Porsche Cayenne’s large engine options. This is the same for the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7.

How a used Porsche Cayenne drives

There are four petrol engines and two plug-in petrol hybrids available on the Porsche Cayenne. Its entry-level engine, a 3.0-litre petrol V6 engine, has 353bhp and 500Nm of torque, achieving 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds. This engine emits 226g of CO2/km and achieves 24.1mpg.

The 2.9-litre S-level engine generates 274g of CO2/km, returns 23.3mpg and gets to 62mph in 5.2 seconds. It has 434bhp and 550Nm of torque. The GTS’s 4.0-litre biturbo V8, is quick – using 474bhp and 600Nm of torque to achieve 62mph in 4.7 seconds. It emits 319g of CO2/km and achieves 21.2mpg. If you’re looking for maximum speed, the 542bhp, 770Nm of torque-producing Turbo achieves 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds.

There are two plug-in hybrid engine options. The E-Hybrid has a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine paired with an electric motor and battery. It produces 456bhp and has 650Nm of torque, taking it from 0-62mph in 5.0 seconds. In terms of performance, it achieves 85.6 to 91.1mpg and emits 71 to 75g of CO2/km.

The highest spec engine is the S E-Hybrid, which has a 4.0-litre, 542bhp V8 petrol engine alongside its battery and 134bhp electric motor. Both produce a combined 900Nm of torque. This engine returns 74.3mpg and emits 86g of CO2/km.

All Porsche Cayennes come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard – the Tiptronic S – and are all-wheel drive.

Features you can expect in a Porsche Cayenne

Interior

The Mk3 Porsche Cayenne has a 12.3-inch HD touch-screen Porsche Communication Management infotainment system. It’s equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easy navigation, entertainment and communication. The steering wheel’s centre console has steering wheel mounted controls, allowing you to easily control the car’s functions.

All Porsche owners can access the Porsche Connect app. It has a wide range of functions, including remote locking and window closing capabilities, pre-heating your vehicle, vehicle performance tracking, navigation and entertainment. You can subscribe to Porsche Connect Plus, which gives your Porsche Cayenne Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Porsche Cayenne feels spacious inside, so four adults can ride comfortably. There's a good amount of leg room in the front and back. The back seating bench slides forward and back, letting you increase boot space with small passengers in the back. You’ll find power points and ventilation controls in the back, allowing rear passengers to charge devices and stay cool or warm. The driver’s seat and steering wheel adjust electronically to make it easy to find your optimum driving position.

Technology

There are a number of features on the Porsche Cayenne to make driving easier, including cruise control, an electric parking brake, hill hold automatic braking and traction and stability control. Some variants come with optional extras, such as a lane-change monitor, night-vision display and traffic sign recognition capabilities.

The Cayenne also has five driving modes: Normal, SPORT, SPORT+, Individual and WET. There are two just for e-hybrids, which are E-Power and Hybrid Auto modes. You can select them to tailor your driving to different road conditions, or to deliver sportier or more economic driving experiences.

Front and rear parking sensors come as standard to make parking this large car easier. Some Cayennes come with parking cameras, and there’s even the option to add Remote Park Assist. This handy feature uses four wide-angle cameras and 12 radar sensors to sense hazards and safely park without human input. It's activated through the Porsche Connect app.

Safety

Gaining the highest five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, the Porsche Cayenne has comprehensive safety features. It earned a stellar 95% adult occupant safety score – the third highest in the large SUV class of 2017 and higher than the BMW X5 (89%) and Mercedes-Benz GLE (91%).

It also earned a child occupant safety score of 80%. There are two ISOFIX child seat mounts in the car’s rear, making sure child seats can be fixed so children can travel safely. The Porsche Cayenne has airbags to protect the driver, passenger and rear passengers from front or side impacts. It has an active bonnet which pops up at the back if the car detects a collision.

Trims available on the Porsche Cayenne

Porsche Cayenne

The entry-level Porsche Cayenne trim has 19-inch alloys and comes with a panoramic sunroof as standard. Inside, there are heated front seats to keep you warm and a handy centre console with two USB charging ports and connectivity sockets. The cabin is lit up by adjustable LED lighting, which can be dimmed from bright to cosy. There are also privacy glass windows in the rear, allowing your passengers to travel discreetly and conceal any valuables, while also reducing glare from the sun, keeping the car cooler.

Porsche Cayenne S

The S sits on 19-inch alloys but has more responsive suspension, thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. It's fitted with a partial leather interior and has a centre console with Direct Touch Control, allowing you to easily switch between driving modes.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Stepping up to 21-inch Cayenne Turbo wheels, the Turbo has a higher profile on the road. Its LED headlights are responsive thanks to the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS). For a smoother ride, it sits on air suspension that works with the existing PASM system. It comes with a roof spoiler for greater aerodynamics, too. The interior is fully leather, and you’ll find adaptive 18-way adjustable electric sports seats. There's also a BOSE surround-sound system to keep you entertained.

Porsche Cayenne Platinum

This flagship, design-focused trim, which is available across all variants, sits on 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels. It has LED headlights, with Porsche lettering on the rear lights, and everything from the model badge to the wheels are finished in satin platinum paint. There are also leather sports seats, which adjust eight ways, and design flourishes like an analogue clock.
