Blue Renault Zoe from the front

Coming with a well-equipped interior and a functional design, the electric Renault Zoe is an ideal car for those needing to get about town. The Renault Zoe offers drivers up to 245 miles of range before needing to be recharged. This along with plenty of boot space makes the Zoe a practical and effective city car.

The Renault Zoe competes well on the small electric car market rivalling the Nissan Leaf, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, the Peugeot e-208 and the Honda e. Renault has designed a competitive electric car that can offer a larger driving range and boot space than most of its competitors.

Renault Zoe updates and facelifts

Originally launched in 2012, the Renault Zoe was a stylish and efficient electric city car. Sharing a similar chassis to the popular Renault Clio, the Zoe came with a long list of equipment as standard as well as a roomy cabin.

In 2019, Renault launched the Mk2 Zoe with more emphasis on sustainability. While receiving a small design update, the Zoe was given LED headlights as standard and a range of new technology inside such as a ten-inch TFT digital instrument display and either a 7-inch or 9.3-inch infotainment display. Renault Zoe’s with the Iconic trim have seats that are entirely made from recycled materials.

Renault also improved the powertrain range by adding a more powerful option as standard, the R135, giving the Zoe a range of up to 245 miles.

Practicality and style of the car

For the size of the car, the Renault Zoe has a good-sized boot, with 338 litres of space. This can be expanded by folding down the rear seats to 1,225 litres. This offers occupants enough room for accommodating several suitcases or luggage for long journeys and weekends away or the weekly shop. The Renault Zoe has a larger boot space than many of its rivals, with the Peugeot e-208 offering 311 litres of space with the rear seats up and 1,106 litres with them down. Similarly, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric has a smaller boot than the Renault Zoe, with a 267-litre boot that expands to 1,118 litres with the rear seats down.

Split-folding rear seats are available on the Iconic trim level and up on the Renault Zoe, allowing drivers even more practicality, as they can expand the boot size while also having space for an extra passenger. There can also be a false floor on some variants, which can be used to keep valuables out of sight or to neatly store safety equipment away.

Running costs

The Renault Zoe falls into insurance groups 14 to 25 and as a fully electric car it benefits from being exempt from road tax.

The Zoe falls into a lower insurance group bracket than many of its rivals and is therefore comparatively reasonable to insure. The Vauxhall Corsa Electric sits in groups 24 to 26 and the Honda e falls into groups 25 to 32.

The Renault Zoe is a fully electric car and comes with a choice of three powertrains.

Available on iterations before 2020, the Q90 powertrain was available, which could put down 107bhp and 245Nm of torque and achieve 0 to 62mph in 13.5 seconds. The R110 was also available until 2020. The R110 powertrain could put down 107bhp and 225Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 62mph in 11.4 seconds. Both the Q90 and R110 used a 40-kWh battery and came with automatic transmission.

The R134 powertrain was made the stand-alone option on the Renault Zoe after 2020. This uses a larger 50kWh battery and can put down 134bhp and 245Nm of torque. The R134 achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.5 seconds and is available with automatic transmission.

The R134 gives the Renault Zoe a range up to 240 miles before needing to be recharged. In comparison, the Honda e has a range of 135 miles while the Vauxhall Corsa Electric has a range of 225 miles.

Features you can expect to find in a Renault Zoe

Interior

Storage solutions around the cabin help to keep the Zoe clutter free. In the front, there is a good-sized glovebox, a cup-holder and a useful cubby located at the front of the centre console that can be used to store smartphones and other personal items. Door bins in the front and rear can hold water bottles or other personal items. There are also USB chargers in the front and rear of the vehicle allowing for smartphones and other entertainment devices to remain fully charged on long journeys.

Inside the car, drivers will notice how the interior mirrors the stylish exterior with its sophisticated design. There is a minimalist design for the dashboard and there are plenty of soft-touch plastics that help to keep it user-friendly.

The Renault Zoe can comfortably seat five adults and offers a good amount of legroom and headroom for the size of the vehicle, thanks to the battery being located under the seats. A heated steering wheel and front seat help to create an enjoyable and comfortable driving experience all year round. The suspension on the Zoe helps to dampen rough roads and keep journeys smooth. Similarly, wind and road noise are kept to a minimum with only a slight hum from the electric powertrain.

Technology

Renault Zoe infotainment screen displaying Apple CarPlay

On the centre of the dashboard on the Techno trim, you will find either a 7- or 9.3-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen, while, on the Iconic trim, you’ll find a 9.3-inch infotainment screen with integrated sat nav, which uses Renault’s EASY LINK system. This comes with Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, allowing drivers to connect to their personal music libraries, sat nav applications and make hands free calls.

Drivers will find using this system intuitive to use thanks to the responsive touchscreen interface and the bright and clear graphics. Below the infotainment screen are a set of physical controls that can be used to control functions such as the climate control and heated front seats.

Located behind the steering wheel there is a ten-inch TFT digital instrument display which replaces the traditional analogue dials. This display also informs drivers about battery levels and regenerative systems.

The Renault Zoe comes with a generous amount of equipment, including plenty of driver assist features, making it good value for money. Driver assistance features include lane keeping assist, which helps to prevent the vehicle from drifting out of its lane. Cruise control helps drivers when on the motorway by maintaining a set speed while cruising, making journeys less tiring. Traffic sign recognition alerts drivers to oncoming speed cameras and local speed limits. Hill start assist holds the brakes until the driver is ready to accelerate when setting off up a hill.

Other useful features include auto lights and wipers which respond to changes in light levels and weather conditions to turn on when needed.

Safety

The Renault Zoe comes with a range of safety features. These include ISOFIX points in the front passenger and outermost rear seats for safely securing child seats, as well as LED headlights and fog lights to improve visibility. There is also an emergency braking system and traction control.

As an electric car, Renault have been mindful of the lack of noise that the car makes when at slow speeds. To help increase pedestrian safety, an electric sounding noise plays when the car is below 18mph, so that pedestrians can hear the vehicle approaching. There is a choice of three noises available for the engine that can be changed via the infotainment screen.

Other safety features include lane departure warning which notifies drivers of any vehicles in the path of the car when changing lanes. Similarly, blind spot monitoring alerts the driver to any cyclists, pedestrians or vehicles in the blind spots of the car, helping to prevent collisions.

The Renault Zoe comes with front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera that helps the driver to avoid colliding with any obstructions.

Trims available on the Renault Zoe

Renault Zoe Techno

The Techno trim is the entry-level trim for the Renault Zoe. The Techno trim features a seven-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. On the exterior, there are 16-inch alloy wheels with a trim-specific hub cap design.

Renault Zoe Iconic

The Iconic trim adds some extra styling features to the Renault Zoe including a unique hub cap design and lateral gold door details. The Iconic trim also comes with a combined CCS DC quick charger to help speed up charging times at home and at public charging points.
