For used Vauxhall Astra GTC cars, choose Arnold Clark

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show as a new type of Astra, the Vauxhall GTC was launched in the UK in 2011. Replacing the Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch, it is a three-door coupé with a sporty edge. It stands apart from its five-door, family-oriented counterpart thanks to a sharp aesthetic and enhanced driving dynamics. In 2012 the GTC received the prestigious Red Dot design award for its striking aesthetics.

Rivalling the Volkswagen Scirocco and Renault Megane coupé, the GTC prioritises fun while remaining practical. Both petrol and diesel options are available alongside two trims: Sport and SRi.

After a successful run, production of the Vauxhall GTC ended in 2018. A growing demand for SUVs meant that sales of this athletic coupé declined. However, there are plenty of excellent used Vauxhall Astra GTC cars examples on the market for those seeking a responsive and exciting driving experience.

Vauxhall Astra GTC updates and facelifts

In 2012 the Vauxhall GTC underwent a minor facelift, which included a revised front grille and rear, as well as extra chrome accents. It also received an additional diesel engine. This provided more power but without incurring high running costs. In 2014 the Vauxhall Astra GTC dropped the ‘Astra’ part of its name and introduced a limited edition model with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol.

Practicality and style of the car

Beneath its sharp, sculpted exterior, the Vauxhall GTC is a very practical car and its ample cabin space doesn’t impact boot space. The GTC’s 380 litres of boot space is easily enough space to carry shopping, a pushchair or even a couple of small suitcases and betters that of the Volkswagen Scirocco’s 312 litres. Fold the rear seats down and the boot volume increases to an impressive 1,165 cubic litres.

Running costs

Reasonable running costs are part of the Vauxhall GTC’s appeal. All variants fall into groups 13–27 out of 50 for insurance. Only the high-performance VXR edition exceeds that, occupying group 35. Compared to the Volkswagen Scirocco, which sits in groups 18–36, premiums are typically lower.

Road tax cost varies widely. Several variants of the GTC only incur an annual charge of £20–35. Other, more powerful options have a yearly cost of £200–£290.

How a used Vauxhall Astra GTC drives

With no fewer than six available engine options, the Vauxhall GTC suits a range of driving styles and preferences. The entry-level engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which produces 118bhp. That’s enough to get you from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds. Step up to the 138bhp version of the same engine and that time is cut to 9.9 seconds. Both variants return a combined fuel economy of up to 46mpg. The 118bhp engine comes with six-speed manual transmission; the 138bhp option is available in either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic guise.

The range-topping petrol unit is a 178bhp 1.6-litre that reaches 62mph from a standstill in just 7.8 seconds. Paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, it returns a combined efficiency of 32.9mpg.

If you’re choosing a diesel engine, there are four options to select from. At launch, the GTC offered two 1.7-litre options – one with an output of 109bhp and the other with 128bhp. These offer impressive efficiency of up to 62.8mpg on the combined cycle and low emissions. The 109bhp version gets from 0-62mph in 11.0 seconds and the 128bhp edition takes one second off this time, reaching 62mph in 10.0 seconds. Both are teamed with a six-speed manual gearbox.

At the top of the lineup is a 2.0-litre diesel engine. At launch, this was a CDTI that produced 163bhp, delivering a fuel economy of 58.9mpg on the combined cycle and achieving a 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds.

Later in the GTC’s lifetime, the engine was replaced with the 2.0-litre BiTurbo, which produces 192bhp. This propels you from 0-62mph in just 7.8 seconds, matching the range-topping petrol engine for acceleration. It also boasts impressive efficiency, returning 53.3mpg on the combined cycle. A choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission is available.

Features you can expect in a Vauxhall Astra GTC

Interior

There is lots of cabin space inside, particularly for front occupants, and leg and headroom are generous enough for two tall adults to fit comfortably in the rear. Alternatively, three children can be seated side by side for shorter journeys. As a three-door model, the GTC’s back row must be accessed by folding the front passenger seat.

The Vauxhall Astra GTC may look completely different from its five-door Astra counterpart, but inside it retains all the practicality offered by the five-door version. Everything is well constructed, with high-quality materials and finishes throughout.

Storage space in the cabin is plentiful too, with deep door bins and a good-size glovebox in the front, as well as two cup holders between the front seats. A small cubby behind the gear lever is ideally sized for a smartphone. On top-spec SRi trims, you’ll also get a storage area in the front armrest, enabling you to keep valuables out of sight.

Infotainment on the GTC consists of a CD player with MP3 compatibility and a DAB radio. There’s also a USB connection, enabling you to link up your smartphone to stream music. A small display set into the dash is operated by buttons and the steering wheel is multi-functional, enabling you to skip music tracks or change radio stations.

Buyers of a used GTC 2.0-litre BiTurbo diesel model will benefit from climate control, updated interior trim and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Technology

The Vauxhall GTC comes well-equipped, with a host of convenience, driver assistance and safety features on board. Cruise control comes as standard, helping to ensure more relaxed motorway driving. All trims also feature air conditioning, enabling you to enjoy the perfect in-cabin temperature.

For optimum visibility at all times, every variant has daytime running lights. Choosing the top-spec SRi trim adds automatic headlights and wipers, as well as hill start assist. This useful function prevents the car from rolling backwards as you pull away on an incline.

When new, the GTC came with the option of rear parking sensors and adaptive cornering headlights. Used vehicle buyers can therefore find variants with these features on the market.

Safety

When it was tested by Euro NCAP, the Vauxhall GTC received a full five-star rating. This includes a 91% score for adult occupant protection and a 79% score for child occupant protection. If you have infants or toddlers, you can transport them securely thanks to ISOFIX child seat mounting points in the outer rear seats.

Six airbags and anti-whiplash headrests are fitted as standard to reduce the risk of injury in a collision. The GTC also comes with active features such as electronic stability control and electronic brakeforce distribution. This varies the amount of braking force distributed to each wheel, helping to maintain traction. For security, a remote alarm system is standard with all but the entry-level petrol variant.

From 2012, the GTC was available with an optional Driver Assistance Pack. This includes a host of more advanced technology to provide an even safer drive. Forward collision alert identifies collision risks and alerts you to their presence, while lane departure warning helps to prevent you from straying lanes on the motorway. The pack also includes traffic sign recognition. Used buyers may therefore find Vauxhall GTC cars with these additional features.

Driving aids include cruise control and electronic stability control.

Vauxhall GTC SRi
