For used Vauxhall Meriva cars, choose Arnold Clark

First released in 2003, the Vauxhall Meriva was one of the first cars to combine an MPV's roominess with a city car's small form factor, making it perfect for city driving and family trips.

The Meriva picked up the 2010 German AUTO BILD Design Award thanks to its redesign, reminiscent of the Vauxhall Insignia and Astra.

As a Compact MPV, the Meriva is the Zafira’s smaller cousin, with five seats and five doors perfect for a spacious people-carrying experience.

Vauxhall Meriva updates and facelifts

The first generation of Meriva was released in 2003 and received a facelift three years later in 2006. The second generation arrived in 2010, completely overhauling the design and bringing the Meriva in line with the Vauxhall family aesthetic of the time. The redesign saw the Meriva increase in size, growing in length by around 250mm. That is reflected in the spacious interior and boot space. The Mk2's 2014 facelift saw the second-generation Meriva receive a new diesel engine, a redesigned front grille and the option of daytime running lights and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Available in both petrol and diesel engines, there are plenty of options to cater to a wide range of wants and needs. The Vauxhall Meriva is an all-round attractive choice when looking for your next family car or city runaround.

Practicality and style of the car

The Vauxhall Meriva offers a spacious interior for passengers and luggage. The 2003 Mk1 Meriva has 560 litres of boot space, increasing to 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded down. The Mk2 Meriva was slightly reconfigured, with the boot measuring 397 litres. Folding the rear seats flat gives you 1,500 litres of space. Thanks to a square tailgate and low boot lip, you can easily store even the most sizeable and awkward objects. By comparison, the rival Ford B-MAX has a boot capacity of 318 litres, increasing to 1,386 with the rear seats folded flat.

The Vauxhall Meriva has FlexSpace seating in the back. This configuration means the rear seats are mounted on a rail, and if you fold the central seat into an armrest, both outer seats can slide inward for a more spacious four-seating arrangement.

All the Meriva's doors open to roughly 90 degrees, with four opening positions for maximum convenience. The rear doors open backwards too, making getting in and out of the rear seats comfortable and easy.

All Mk2 Merivas can tow up to 1,150kg, meaning you can take medium caravans, camping equipment, holiday gear and trailers wherever you go.

Running costs

The Meriva is a practical car that doesn't break the bank. Mk2 Merivas fall between insurance groups 5 and 18 out of 50, which is on the lower end of the price scale when compared to rivals. Comparatively, the Fiat 500L is in groups 7–20.

Road tax for a Vauxhall Meriva will typically be between £180 and £365. You can expect to pay £180 for the Mk2 1.4i 16V Expression, while the Mk1 1.6 8V Expression will set you back £365 per year. Some options, such as the Mk2 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX S, cost as little as £20 per year thanks to their lower emissions.

Features you can expect in a Vauxhall Meriva

Interior

Inside the Meriva is a well-furnished cabin providing a premium feel to this affordable family car.

The Meriva has door bins designed to hold large bottles. Certain trims feature a sliding central armrest. Because Mk2 Merivas come with an electronic handbrake, there is more space in the centre to store small items while on the go.

The Meriva’s dashboard is intuitive to use, with air conditioning and radio easy to control. Climbing through the trims in the post-2014 Mk2 Meriva, you’ll find more premium trims with a Bluetooth-compatible system, complete with a CD player and DAB radio.

Sturdy handrails are mounted on the B-pillars, making getting in and out of the back of the Meriva even easier. Thanks to the wide-opening rear-hinged doors, there is good accessibility for people who struggle with mobility, as well as lifting children in and out of the car. There are aeroplane-style folding trays fitted to the back of each front seat, with cupholders to help avoid spillages on the go. Thanks to the well-designed windows in the rear seats, there is unrestricted visibility for all occupants.

With the centre seat folded flat, the outer rear seats can slide inwards, giving rear passengers a roomier ride. The rear seats can be folded flat from either the back or the boot, making expanding the boot space easy and convenient.

Throughout the different trims you will find air conditioning, sat nav, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

Merivas with the Navi650 or Navi950 sat nav system feature a seven-inch colour screen.

Technology

In top spec Merivas or as an optional extra, you get OnStar connected services. This allows you access to 24-hour assistance and lets you check the car's diagnostics from your phone. The car will even automatically alert emergency services if it detects there has been a crash. The Meriva also comes with electronic stability control and hill start assist.

Safety

As a family car, the Vauxhall Meriva naturally prioritises safety. With a five-star Euro NCAP rating, the Meriva saw an 89% adult occupancy protection score, with 77% child occupant protection.

There are four airbags as standard in the Meriva, with top spec trims also featuring curtain airbags for added safety. These curtain airbags can be added to other trim levels as an optional extra. To keep little passengers safe, you can install child seats on the ISOFIX car mounts present in both outer rear seats.

Under heavy braking, adaptive brake lights flash to warn other drivers of your sudden change of speed.

Vauxhall Meriva Life

The Life is the Meriva’s entry-level trim. As standard, it comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and air conditioning. Long journeys are made less tiring thanks to cruise control. Front fog lights make driving with poor visibility safer. Adjusting rear visibility is easier with electric heated mirrors. The steering wheel adjusts for rake and reach.

Vauxhall Meriva Club

Upgrading to the Meriva Club trim adds curtain airbags for added safety for all occupants in the event of a collision. The club also includes sliding front cupholders for convenience and portability of small items on the go. The addition of a chrome exhaust tip adds a touch of finesse to the Meriva.

Vauxhall Meriva Tech Line

The Tech Line increases comfort, with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel to take the edge off on cold days. It features sat nav and parking sensors, giving you confidence to find your way and to park the Meriva. It also includes rear electric windows for the convenience and comfort of the rear passengers.

Vauxhall Meriva SE

The SE is the flagship trim for the Vauxhall Meriva. The inclusion of a panoramic sunroof gives the interior a light and roomy feel.
