What is the VW Passat R-Line?

The R Line is a top-spec trim on the Volkswagen Passat. It was first added to the model in 2013 and is available as an estate or saloon body. When first introduced, the R Line added new exterior styling, including more prominent front and rear bumpers, and extended side skirts. It also came with new cabin technology and a range of powerful engines, making it well-suited to lots of different driving needs.

The Volkswagen Passat R Line combines the practicality of a family car with the upmarket styling of top-end saloons. This makes it a competitor to other practical and desirable models, including the Vauxhall Insignia, Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 508 and Mazda 6.

VW Passat R-Line history

The R Line trim was first introduced as a top-level trim on the Volkswagen Passat Mk7. With the Passat model moving away from being a family vehicle, the R Line trim added a range of smart exterior and interior styling cues, including lowering the Passat’s suspension by 15mm.

Inside, the R Line also comes with a multi-functional leather-trimmed steering wheel. When paired with a DSG gearbox, the steering wheel comes with paddle shifters to add to its sports-inspired design. It was available with a range of three diesel engines. The entry-level option was a 104bhp, 1.6-litre engine. There was also a 138bhp, 2.0-litre engine and a 158bhp, 1.4-litre option.

The R Line received a facelift in 2017, adding a panoramic sunroof, premium LED headlights with projection technology and an electronic lock differential for improved traction and handling.

The Volkswagen Passat Mk8 launched in 2019 and is only available as an estate. In the Mk8, the R Line was upgraded with exterior chrome detailing, synthetic leather upholstery with a signature R-Line badge and matrix LED headlights. This R Line is only available with a 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Where does the VW Passat R-Line sit in the range?

Since its introduction, the R Line has been a higher-level trim across both the Mk7 and Mk8 Passats. In the Mk7 range, the R Line sits above the S, SE and Sport trims. The Executive and Executive Style trims were released in 2014 and sit above the R Line.

In the Mk8, the R Line sits above the S and SE trims, but below the flagship SEL.

What features and equipment does the Volkswagen Passat R Line have?

The R Line boasts unmistakable styling thanks to its 19-inch, two-toned machined alloy wheels. It has a signature front and rear bumper, both coming with R-Line badges. There is also a sporty rear valance and a power-tilting sunroof, which are both a step up on the SE trim.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find V-Tex synthetic leather upholstery throughout. The driver’s seat comes with eight-way power functionality and can be heated, for extra luxury. You will also find a leather-wrapped gear knob, dual-zone automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rear mirror. The R Line comes with keyless access with start-stop technology and remote start.

Depending on the model you choose, the R Line can include signature R Line door projectors which display the badge on the floor as you open the doors. There is interior ambient lighting which helps keep the cabin illuminated even when driving at night. On the centre console, you will find a 6.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. This system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth streaming.

The R Line trim also comes with lots of driver assist technology, including a forward collision monitor, rear traffic alert and a blind spot monitor which helps keep you safe as you pull out of difficult parking spots. Adaptive cruise control and a lane-keeping assist are included and help make motorway cruising even easier.

You will have a rear-view camera system to help ease you into tight spots as well as an anti-lock braking system. Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System is included. This system automatically turns lights on, unlocks doors and helps in the event of a crash.
