BMW has unveiled the next generation X5 ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September. The new SUV promises to be lighter and more efficient than previous models and, for the first time in its history, will offer a rear wheel drive option as well as the traditional 4x4 drive.

Introduced in 1999, the X5 has always been a big hit. BMW has seen sales of 1.3 million worldwide, and it has proven extremely popular in the UK, with the previous generation X5 selling almost 700,000 units.

Looks wise, there’s no denying the new X5 is a BMW. Continuing where the last generation model kicks off, the new X5 is based heavily on the outgoing model and other models in the BMW range and is evolutionary, rather than an outright new design.

Inside the cabin, BMW claims the interior is a much more relaxing place to be with a higher quality feel, more space and increased flexibility, with customers able to opt for a 3rd row of seats when specifying their order.

Handling and performance are also much improved, thanks mainly to a 80kg reduction in weight - despite slightly bigger dimensions. Lightweight materials and improvements to the manufacturing process contribute to the weight saving. From launch, 3 engines will be available, all of which come mated to an eight speed automatic gearbox with start stop technology as standard.

BMW is well known for its research and development and the new X5 comes with a long list of high-tech optional extras to improve safety and driving performance. Options include a 360-degree view parking assistant, night vision with human and animal detection, lane departure warning and Heads Up display to relay all the information back to the driver without taking their eyes of the road.
