The new S 63 AMG is a powerful luxury saloon, priding itself on being dynamic, lightweight and efficient. Mercedes-Benz claim the new car meets “the highest standards in terms of high-class appeal, quality and perfection.”
Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said: “Following the successful launch of the A 45 AMG and the CLA 45 AMG, the new S 63 AMG highlights our expertise in the automotive high-end segment.”
Full Mercedes S 63 AMG price and spec information can be found on their website - prices start from £113,765.00 OTR. But let's review some of the impressive features of the new saloon car:
Efficient drive systems combined with the lighter structure have apparently led to improved fuel efficiency – the combined fuel consumption of the S 63 AMG is 10.1 to 10.3 litres per 100km (this is around 30 MPG). CO2 emissions are 237 to 242 g/km – the 8-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is due to come into force in 2015.
The S 63 AMG is up to 100kg lighter than its predecessor, thanks to various innovative features. For example, a lithium-ion battery replaces the conventional starter battery, saving 20kg. Insensitive to cold temperatures, the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 78 Ah. The S63 AMG is the first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.
Other features to reduce the weight of the car include:
A weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brake system also comes as an option in the S63 AMG – giving extremely short stopping distances and spontaneous deceleration for enhanced driving dynamics and ride comfort.
With the increased efficiency and reduced weight, this new model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4.4 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
The Mercedes S 63 AMG engine comes with lots of innovative features.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission provides the driver with an individual, custom-tailored, dynamic driving experience. Select the transmission mode that suits you – “C” mode (Comfort) will engage the ECO Start/Stop function and provide smooth gear changes (typically setting off in 2nd gear); “S” and “M” modes (Sport and Manual) see the Start/Stop function deactivated and a more agile engine and transmission, with faster (for that read: ‘louder’) gearshifts.
There are also two suspension variants – the AIRMATIC and the MAGIC BODY CONTROL, both of which call on various pieces of in-car technology to adapt the car to road conditions for the smoothest possible ride.
The car also features an AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps, allowing drivers to experience a different engine sound based on the transmission mode. Select Comfort mode to enjoy an understated sound; in Sport and Manual modes, the flaps will open earlier to create a “fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound” according to Mercedes-AMG. All variants are also fitted with ESP Curve Dynamic Assist to give perfect corner handling.
The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is available as an option for the first time.
The car creates a strong visual impression, both inside and out, with many key features from the Mercedes tradition and the classic AMG design cues. Inside, you will find improved interior dimensions, new control logic, ergonomic touches and easy-to-use technology such as the TFT display in the instrument cluster, as well as AMG sports seats, an AMG sports steering wheel and fine nappa leather used on the seat backrests. Fancy.
The Mercedes S 63 AMG interior boasts fine nappa leather and AMG styling.
Safety features have also been built in. Intelligent Drive – comfort and safety blended into one – includes Driving Assistance Package Plus and Night View Assist Plus.
Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "We have unquestionably achieved our aim of making the new S 63 AMG more powerful, lightweight and efficient than its predecessor.
