These MPVs are perfect for families on a budget

If you have a large family, chances are you don’t have money to burn. However, the transport demands of family life never end. Whether you’re ferrying people to piano lessons and football practice or doing school runs, you’re going to need a car that gets you all from to A to B without having to squeeze everyone in the boot.

That’s where our selection of the best minivans and people carriers comes in. And you may be pleasantly surprised at what you can find for under the £10,000 mark…

The smooth operator: Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

The Zafira Tourer is a big, grown-up version of Vauxhall’s popular estate car, and is known for its lack of cabin noise, smooth ride and upmarket interior. With seven flexible seats (yes, you can move them around, which is great if you need to carry an Ikea flatpack, five kids or a ton of luggage) and it’s got a cavernous capacity of 1,860 litres with the back two rows folded down.

You can pick one up for just below £10k with a good amount of kit. This one has a comfort pack as an extra, plus front and rear parking sensors, sports pedals and sports suspension.

Maximise your enjoyment: The Ford Grand C-Max

A more exaggerated, beefed up version of the Ford Focus, the Grand C-Max has it all. It’s reliable and actually fun to drive, so instead of feeling like the chauffeur, you can enjoy its pinpoint sharp steering and sporty torque while the suspension keeps everyone happy in the back.

With the Ford SYNC system as standard, it’s got Bluetooth connectivity to entertain the troops and an array of useful features like 12v sockets, storage in the centre armrest, ISOFIX attachments and air conditioning.

Take the scenic route: Renault Grand Scenic

Going on your travels? The Grand Scenic is equipped with everything you’ll need for a smooth journey – plenty of storage, seven seats, cruise control, sat nav and Bluetooth connectivity. Add a 5-star safety rating and dual zone climate control, and you’re good to go.

It’s great for short journeys, too, with an efficient 1.5-litre engine that delivers around 70mpg, so whether you’re off on holiday with the kids or just taking them to the park, it won’t guzzle fuel. This one is a bargain at well under 10k.

Make family travel into an artform: Citroën C4 Picasso

Best for smaller families, this is a classic 5-seater MPV that doesn’t give off minivan vibes. It’s sleeker and more aerodynamic than most people carriers on the market and makes full use of Citroën’s palette of design flourishes, such as the airy cabin, the chrome chevrons across the bonnet and the wavy-lined upholstery. It also boasts a clean dashboard with interactive 7-inch touchscreen and extra upper screen featuring dials and driving information.

This powder blue model is a top of the range version, with a 1.6-litre engine capable of a very sensible 70 mpg, and all the features that make the Picasso the MVP of MPVs.
