A car covered entirely in bison leather (including the interior and the engine) is on sale from the 'Workshop of Functional Luxury', a group of Russian designers who also extend the service to other vehicles. Maxim Sarmatov, the group's PR Director, said: “We offer this unique service with natural leather to other vehicles, including yachts, boats, and even helicopters.”

The vehicle's fibreglass body is coated in hand-stitched leather, engraved by artists from the Middle East. The engine is covered using specially treated heat resistant leather, and the engine compartment contains Swarovski crystal inserts, (just in case the leather alone wasn’t strange enough). The interior is also leather throughout, with seats covered in fur.

The technology involved in processing the vehicle ensures the leather is water-resistant and able to withstand extreme weather conditions, including the scorching heat of Middle Eastern summers as well as the severe winters of Russia. The car has a 2.5-litre engine, automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive and a right-hand steering wheel.

The creators of this vehicle make assurances that it can be cleaned like a normal motor vehicle. It also comes with a 'lifetime warranty'.

Threatened species

The wood bison is listed as a threatened species in Canada. According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, just two centuries ago, between 30 and 60 million bison roamed the grassy, shrubby plains and prairies, across Mexico to central Canada. The WCS states that “…in the late nineteenth century, sport-hunting and mass slaughters of this mammal brought the species to the brink of extinction.” Russian fur-hunting expeditions to Alaska and North America contributed to this. Today, fewer than 20,000 animals now roam freely.

The badge on this car says Peugeot, but the body has been extensively modified using fiberglass – beyond recognition. According to Carbuzz, the car looks like it might be an early 203, but it could easily be entirely custom-built.

The car is up for sale on Russian auto-trading site Avito for £780,000 (40,000,000 rubles).

This isn’t the first time a car has been covered entirely in leather – back in 2011 a Latvian (and previously Soviet) tuning company, Dartz, wrapped a Ferrari F430 in black leather.
