Our pick of the best luxury SUVs for less than £30k

Even though the ‘U’ in SUV stands for utility, there are plenty of models on the market that offer some fabulous premium spec for under the £30,000 mark.

With heated seats and leather trim, automatic tailgates and even the power to have your online shopping delivered to your boot, that Monday morning school run will never be the same again…

Upmarket comfort: Mazda CX-5

Step into the Mazda CX-5 and you immediately go upmarket, thanks to its soft stone-coloured upholstery, a display that’s positioned perfectly in your eyeline, and sat nav with a colour head-up display (available on Sport Nav trims). On the same trim, the electric boot glides open as if by magic, taking all the pain out of packing the groceries.

Happily, under the bonnet, things are just as luxurious, thanks to a smooth and spirited 2.2-litre engine engineered to give you a fantastic driving experience. Which leaves you free to marvel over the heated steering wheel.

Scandinavian chic: Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 has so many thoughtfully designed luxuries that you might want to live in it. It’s a small crossover SUV, but you’ll be seriously impressed with its simplicity and clever features, like the 12.3-inch crystal display, the little Swedish flag on the doors, and the refrigerated glovebox.

Naturally, you get incredible safety kit, but it’s Volvo’s On Call app that will make your mind boggle. You can use it to pre-heat your car, give friends and family access, receive in-car deliveries and it’ll even tell you where it is in the car park, using an ingenious ‘honk and flash’ function. Who needs a house, anyway?

Practically perfect: ŠKODA Kodiaq

If you’re the sort of person who gets excited about smart storage solutions, you’ll love the spacious seven-seater behemoth that is the Kodiaq. Not only has it won a raft of awards, it could carry those awards tenfold in its many compartments – along with the secret umbrella hidden in the door panel and the ice scraper in the fuel door.

It’s comfortable, has a powerful and quiet 2.0 TDi engine that will help you glide effortlessly along the motorway, and the 9-inch infotainment system with sat nav and integrated Wi-Fi will keep you company on the way. The panoramic sunroof also makes driving very pleasant indeed.

Diabolically good: Peugeot 3008

With a front grille that looks like a supervillain plotting their next audacious move, the Peugeot 3008 brings style and swagger to the small SUV segment and runs away with all the awards, including Driver Power Car of the Year 2018.

On the inside, it’s similarly futuristic, with a glowing blue ambient light along the dash and buckets of innovative touchscreen tech, including the Peugeot iCockpit display, a heads-up display and digital instrument panel, 3D sat nav and voice control. With five-star safety and cool extras like an illuminated air-conditioned compartment in the driver’s armrest, you can be a ruler of the road for under £30,000.
