With scenery like this, it's no wonder British tourism is on the rise

VisitBritain has reported record visitor increases in spend of 13% in the first 7 months of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. This comes on the back of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games in London, showing that Britain has been able to capitalise on the year’s tourist opportunities.

This 13% increase in spend means that, for every pound VisitBritain spends on tourism overseas, a tourist will spend £19 when they come here. The tourism body is trying to continue this trend in 2014, working with a number of partners including British Airways, EasyJet and Expedia in order to encourage people to travel to Britain.

VisitBritain has also highlighted that the tourism industry in Britain has contributed over £18.6 billion to the UK economy, hopefully set to rise next year with the major sporting events, such as the Ryder Cup, coming to Scotland in 2014. The chairman of VisitBritain, Christopher Rodrigues, said that the “challenge was to convert the enthusiasm of London 2012 into sustained increases in awareness and intention to visit.”

The VisitBritain chairman also has the backing of the new Tourism minister, Helen Grant, who commented: “I want to do all I can to help deliver further growth for the tourism sector, building on the great success of 2012.”
