Take a look at the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE set the standard for luxury SUVs when it launched back in 1997. Now it’s back with the fourth-generation model, but does it still have the innovation to stay ahead of the pack?

Exterior

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE is the perfect mix of power and elegance, featuring strong lines, an imposing grille and striking angles on the light clusters and exhaust ports. The AMG alloy wheels come in sizes ranging from 18–22 inches, offering a range of stylish designs, all incorporating one of the most sophisticated suspension systems ever made. The headlamps use some of the latest LED technology, with the line-topping Ultra Range Highbeam providing the ultimate view ahead with 84 individually adjustable LEDs. All this combines to create the biggest and smartest GLE to date.

Interior

For the first time ever, the GLE will be available with a seven-seat configuration and with Nappa leather upholstery, every passenger will enjoy a comfortable journey. To complement this, there’s a choice of either brushed aluminium or open-pore wood. There’s also ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours to perfectly set the mood. This is still an off-roader at heart and the angular design and sturdy grab handles on the centre console show this is a car that means business.

Innovative technology

The widescreen cockpit puts everything at your fingertips with a stunning 12.3-inch display, and you can select graphics that suit your look with a choice of four different styles. The GLE comes with the Mercedes-Benz MBUX multimedia system with voice activation. Just say ‘Hey Mercedes’ and tell the car exactly what you need and it will respond – it’ll even learn more about your habits as you spend more time driving. And if you want the ultimate navigation system, MBUX augmented reality navigation blends your route instructions graphics with a live feed from your camera.

Space and practicality

While the GLE has always provided generous space, the increased wheelbase means that passengers have more room than ever before with an extra 69mm of legroom compared to the previous model. The option to add a third row of seats now makes this an excellent option for those with a growing family. With the second row of seats pushed back, the boot space is 630 litres. The GLE allows plenty of flexibility, increasing the capacity by almost 200 litres with the seats pushed forward and expanding to a maximum of 2,225 litres when they are folded away.

Safety features

There is a range of safety options available with the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE. Blind Spot Assist provides a warning if there are any cars in close proximity when you indicate to change lanes. Traffic Sign Assist uses cameras and map data to show speed limits and road restrictions on the digital display. Active Lane Keeping Assist sends a vibrating signal through the steering wheel if you start to cross the lines, while the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC automatically adapts your speed to match that of slower-moving vehicles in front.

Options

There are plenty of optional packages to help you build the car you want. Need some additional off-road engineering? The Off-Road package provides additional driving modes, reinforced flooring and underbody protection. If you’re using the GLE for its pulling power, the towing package adds extra capacity, as well as parking assistance for trailers. And if gadgets matter to you, the Tech package features smartphone integration and augmented reality navigation while Tech Plus adds gesture controls. Need even more luxury? The Premium package comes with a 360-degree camera, wireless charging and adaptive high-beam headlights. For the ultimate GLE, the Premium Plus package is designed to impress, with panoramic glass sunroof, Burmester surround sound, Keyless-Go access and remote boot closing.

Engines

There are two petrol engines to choose from at launch. The GLE 300 d 4MATIC comes with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that produces 254 bhp, which can achieve 46.3 mpg on the combined cycle.

The GLE 450 4MATIC offers a little more punch and is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine which can goes from 0–62 mph in just under 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 155 mph.
