Inverness Airport upgrade underway

A multi-million pound plan to upgrade Inverness Airport has begun

The upgrade of Inverness Airport is underway following a huge investment from Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) of £1.4m. The project involves resurfacing the airport’s mile-long runway, which handles over 31,000 flights per year.

The project hopes to extend the life of the runway by 20 years, which will involve replacing 1800m of existing tarmac. The project also seeks to create a £1.2m taxiway extension that will connect the main runway to the Inverness Airport Business Park, opening up the possibility of future development.

HIAL has claimed that the work should be completed by the end of January, with most of the work being conducted during the night so as to avoid any disruption to normal airport operations.

The investment follows the completion in 2012 of an £850,000 project to upgrade the airport’s south apron, the main parking area for passenger aircraft.

HIAL has commented: “Inverness airport is a strategically significant gateway for the region and is a major economic driver for the Inner Moray Firth and wider Highland areas. Its future growth will play a vital role in making our region an attractive place in which to live, work and invest.”
