Glasgow has been the centre of a media frenzy across the globe after it was declared a must-visit destination in 2014.

The past few weeks have witnessed some of the world’s leading news publications, travel guides and websites – including The Telegraph, The Guardian, Rough Guides, Jetsetter and Wanderlust – waxing lyrical about all the amazing things that Glasgow has to offer this year.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of the Council and Chair of GCMB, said: "I'm delighted these publications and sites recognise that Glasgow is one of the world's hottest cities right now and it's certainly very gratifying to be listed ahead of destinations in the US, Australia, France, Italy, South Africa, China and even the Caribbean."

Although it might not have the Australian sunshine or Caribbean beaches, Glasgow has proved that it is a top holiday destination for 2014, thanks to all the exciting events taking place throughout the year.

From 23rd of July until the 3rd of August, Glasgow will become host to some of the fittest and fastest athletes the world has to offer as the 2014 Commonwealth Games begin. Specially-designed stadiums and sporting hubs have ensured that the city will be a dream holiday destination for sport enthusiasts for years to come, while the Games will be the largest sporting event Glasgow has ever seen.

The grand opening of the impressive £125 million SSE Hydro Arena is another reason to visit Glasgow. This aesthetically stunning multi-purpose venue has already played host to various international superstars, and the remainder of 2014 proves to be just as exciting: Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and The Backstreet Boys, to name just a few, will be taking to the stage. Rough Guides also cites the Riverside Museum (winner of European Museum of the Year, 2013) as a highlight of the city.
