BMW AirTouch allows contactless in-car control

BMW’s new in-car technology gives you full control of your infotainment system, without having to touch a thing.

Earlier this year, we wrote about how BMW raised the bar with in-car technology with its iDrive gesture control feature in the new BMW 7 Series.

Now, the German car manufacturer has gone one step further.

Where iDrive gesture control allows you to command the car to complete actions by moving your hand in a particular zone in front of the touchscreen, AirTouch will allow you to command the car from either front seat, in any area.

This means that the technology recognises three-dimensional movements and allows the driver or front-seat passenger to execute commands without actually touching the screen, or indeed, going anywhere near it at all.

How does it work?

  • Sensors have been fitted in the front of the car to detect movement from the driver and front-seat passenger.
  • The technology is complemented by an ‘OK’ button installed both in the steering wheel and the passenger’s door sill to confirm actions.

Why is it needed?

BMW hopes that this new technology will improve road safety as drivers will be able to keep their eyes on the road while completing actions on the infotainment screen.

AirTouch will be debuted at CES 2016 next week, and we can’t wait to take a closer look at this exciting new technology.
