Nearly 40,000 vehicles were stolen in the UK in 2013/14, a frightening statistic for any driver. Protecting your possessions is the first step in preventing theft; however, it can be difficult to determine which security system will effectively guarantee the safety of your vehicle. Thankfully, the most recent BIVSA (British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards) revealed the most secure vehicles available in the UK. We have sorted through the findings to pinpoint the best cars for security-conscious drivers with some added tips for good measure.

Audi A1

The Audi A1 is equipped with remote central locking triggered by the proximity of a Smart Key. Security is increased with a Thatcham Category 1 ignition system immobiliser and an electronic device designed to prevent the car from being hot-wired. The 3-circuit isolation system will counter against even the most experienced thief.

Citroën C5

Citroën’s C5 ranked top of the most secure family cars in part due to the SmartNav GPS navigation system, which is able to track and locate stolen vehicles. The rise of tracking software has been a major theft deterrent in the UK and has the added benefit of lower insurance costs.

Volkswagen Beetle

Thatcham research centre has indicated that Volkswagen has the highest standards of vehicle security of any manufacturer. The new Beetle comes fitted with a state-of-the-art alarm system that uses ultrasonic technology to detect movement inside the car and a tilt sensor to thwart an unauthorised attempt to tow it away.

Top tips to prevent theft

Hide your belongings

Leaving valuable possessions in full view is the easiest way to attract thieves and may invalidate your insurance policy if an incident does occur. Ensure bags and coats are not left out as thieves may believe that they are concealing assets.

Park smart

If it is not possible to park in a private garage, leave your vehicle in a well-lit street overlooked by residential housing. Be aware of surveillance cameras as a means of deterrence and consider installing CCTV at your own property.

Listen for the lock

Be aware of signal jamming. The common method of car theft involves thieves using a device to jam the remote key signal to prevent the car from locking. Always listen for the noise of the door locks before walking away from your car.

Keep keys safe

Hide car keys, even at home, to prevent further tragedy if you are the unlikely victim of burglary. Another popular technique for car thieves is using a device to hook keys through the letterbox.
