That’s not all - you’ll be the first to hear about our weekend events, sales and special offers!

Eddie Hawthorne, Arnold Clark Chief Executive and Group Managing Director, said: ‘I’m delighted to launch this brilliant competition for our Arnold Clark Rewards members.

‘It’s great to be able to give back to our loyal customers. Make sure you download our app to be in with a chance of winning!’

So far, we've given away £1,331,496.11. Read from our previous winners below.

David, Dundee

David is planning a few more trips abroad after becoming our latest Rewards winner.

He said: 'I downloaded the app and entered the competition when I got my new car. It's one of those things where it was easy to enter but I never thought I'd have a realistic chance of winning!

'When my name was drawn and I found out I'd won, I couldn't believe it!

'I'm just going to enjoy life and book a few more holidays. The world is my oyster!'

Nathan, Yorkshire

Nathan had to double check when he got notified that he had won back the cost of his car.

The 26-year-old said: 'I'm probably like every other winner, I never thought it would be me!

'I saw the notification on the app, and I just couldn't believe it. I had to phone up the branch to confirm it.

'I downloaded the app when I got my car because it's so useful for keeping your details updated and checking when your MOT is due.

'I'm delighted to be a winner, this money will help towards buying a new house.'

Demi-Lee, Glasgow

Only a week before she became a Rewards winner, Demi-Lee had been encouraging her work colleague to enter the draw to win back the cost of her car.

She said: 'I had mentioned it to my friend in work because I thought it was a great prize, but I never expected to win it myself!

'I had downloaded the app when I bought my car and I often enter the Rewards draws to try and win things like football tickets. It's free to enter so I thought I had nothing to lose!

'I couldn't believe it when I won. My boyfriend and I are looking to move house, so we can use the money towards that!'

Heather, Glasgow

Heather downloaded the Arnold Clark app as soon as she bought her new car.

She said: 'The app is really useful for keeping me updated with things like my mileage and when I need a service.

'When I received an email to say I was a Rewards winner, I thought it was spam, to be honest.

'Even after it was confirmed, I was still in shock. We recently moved house, so the money will really help with that.'

Nicole, Johnstone

Nicole regularly checks her Arnold Clark app to keep her mileage up-to-date and see when her MOT is due.

However, she couldn't believe it when she got the notification and email to tell her that she was a Rewards winner.

Nicole said: 'I was sitting next to my partner at the time, and I genuinely didn't think it was real!

'I had to double check it to make sure! It was a real shock to the system, but I'm absolutely delighted!'

Alison, Wakefield

Alison received the notification on the Arnold Clark app that she was a Rewards winner - but it wasn't until a few days later that she realised what that meant.

She explained: 'I was sitting in work and saw the notification, but didn't take much notice of it, to be honest.

'It wasn't until later in the week that I showed my husband and I phoned Arnold Clark to confirm.

'I can't tell you how much of a boost this is, we're so happy to be Rewards winners!'

Sean, Glasgow

Sean couldn't believe he had been selected as a Rewards winner when he got the notification through on the app.

He said: 'I saw the message on the app, but to be honest, I was doubting whether it was real or not!

'But once I got the phone call to say that I'd won, I was over the moon. Things like this never happen to me!'

Clair, West Midlands

When Clair was purchasing her new car, staff at her local branch encouraged her to download the Arnold Clark app.

She said: 'It's the third car I've had from Arnold Clark, and when I was getting it, I was told to download the app to update my mileage and things like that.

'When I read about the Rewards offer, I thought it was too good not to enter.

'I couldn't believe it when I got the notification to say I'd won. To win this money is truly unbelievable.'

Susan, Ayr

Susan has managed to help out her daughter after winning back the cost of her car.

She said: 'I downloaded the app because it's so easy to keep everything in the one place.

'I never win anything! My daughter was looking to buy a new car, so I'm delighted to have been able to help her with that.'

Dawn, Wolverhampton

Dawn regularly updates the Arnold Clark app to keep track of her mileage.

She was thinking of selling her car so was using the app to request a valuation when she saw the notification that she was a Rewards winner.

Dawn said: 'I couldn't believe it, things like this never happen to me! I cried when I found out.

'I was thinking about getting a new car, so this helped me get an even newer model than I was looking for.'

Jia, Cheshire

Jia downloaded the Arnold Clark app after getting a new car a few months ago.

She opted in to our Rewards, but never gave it a second thought after that.

Jia said: 'I downloaded the app because I was regularly updating my mileage and checking when any servicing was due.

'When I found out I was Rewards winner, I didn't even realise what I had won at first!

'I couldn't believe! It's amazing!

'I can now pay off my car and I've still got some extra money left!'

Derek, Newcastle

Derek is planning a holiday after becoming an Arnold Clark Rewards winner.

He said: 'When I got the notification on the app, I thought I had maybe won something like car mats.

'I couldn't believe it when I won the money, I keep checking it to see that it's real!

'We're looking at taking the family away on holiday later in the year!'

Margaret, Burton upon Trent

Even when Margaret received the notification via the app to let her know she had been selected as a Rewards winner, she couldn't believe it!

Margaret said: 'I never win anything so I was in complete shock - I still don't think it's properly registered yet!

'With the money, I've managed to pay off my car and put some towards a cruise that me and my husband are going on later this year.'

Matthew, Rhyl

Matthew uses the Arnold Clark app because it keeps his mileage, servicing and MOT history in one place.

He said: 'When I got the notification through the app, I didn't know if it was real at first!

'Once it was confirmed, I was delighted!'

Barbara, Stirling

The staff at Barbara's local branch helped her download the app on to her phone - and she continued to use it to update her mileage.

She said: 'The staff were so friendly and helped me download the app, that's where I saw I could enter the Rewards competition.

'I've never won anything in my life, so this is amazing!'

Kirishanth, Sheffield

Kirishanth was using the Arnold Clark app to search for his next car when he got the notification to say that he was a winner.

He said: 'I'm always on the app searching for new cars for either my wife or myself.

'I'd been unsuccessful in the Rewards draw a few times before, so when it came through that I'd won, I was in total shock!

'I'll definitely be looking at getting a new car now!'

Thomas, Bo'ness

Thomas uses the app to track his mileage and didn't miss the chance to enter the draw for the chance to become a Rewards winner.

He said: 'I couldn't believe it when it said on the app that I'd won! I had to phone up to confirm it was real.

'I still can't believe it, to be honest!

'I'm retiring next year, so to win this money is unbelievable!'

Mary Jane, Glasgow

After becoming a Rewards winner, Mary Jane is planning on her bringing forward her wedding to partner Ross.

She said: 'I'd been working all day when I got home and checked my emails to see that I'd won.

'I couldn't believe it when I won, it's amazing!

'My partner and I got engaged last June and were planning to get married in 2025 - but now we have same extra money, we're looking to get married next year!'

Marilyn, Derbyshire

Marilyn downloaded the app after her twin sister, Maureen, told her how handy it is to keep your mileage updated and be reminded about an upcoming MOT.

She said: 'The app is great because it means I don't forget when my MOT is due!

'Then when I saw the Rewards competition, I decided to opt in but I never thought I'd win!

'I'm taking Maureen on a cruise to celebrate the win - it's the least I could do!'

Scott, Motherwell

When Scott saw it was free to enter our Rewards competition, it was a no-brainer to sign up.

He said: 'I was out on a walk with my dad and he asked how much I'd still left to pay for my car. That's when I went on the app and noticed I could opt in for the chance to win back the cost of my car.

'It's free to enter, so there wasn't a reason not to enter.

'Then when I found out I'd won, I was in total disbelief. I'm only 22 so it's amazing to be able to pay off my car. I'm still speechless!'

Louise, Stafford

Louise downloaded the Arnold Clark app after she purchased a car from us last year.

She said: 'When I purchased my car, I downloaded the app so I could keep up to date with all my documents, and that's when I found out I could enter this competition for the chance to win back the cost of my car.

'Probably like most other winners, I couldn't believe it at first, my heart was racing!

'We're just moving to a new house, so the money will really help towards a deposit!'

Vincent, Barnsley

Similarly, Vincent downloaded our app after he got the keys to his new car almost two years ago.

He said: 'I downloaded the app so I could easily check all my documents, but when I saw the Rewards competition, I made sure to enter.

'Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win!

'I'm now looking to see about getting a new car and will be visiting my local Arnold Clark branch to see what I like.'

Louise, from Greenock

Louise bought her new car from Arnold Clark last July and downloaded the Arnold Clark app to keep track of all her documents.

But she couldn't believe it when she was announced as a winner.

Louise said: 'I get a lot of emails, and mostly are spam, but when I saw one from Arnold Clark, I decided to keep it. When it said I had won, I checked the app and it was confirmed!

'I never play the lottery or anything like that, so to win this and the cost of my car back is amazing!

'I've managed to pay off my car and give some money to my son and his girlfriend towards a holiday to Copenhagen.'

Alex, from Leeds

Alex was using his app to book in his next MOT when he saw a notification that he’d won the cost of his car back.

He said: ‘Probably, like everyone else, I didn’t believe it at first. I wasn’t even too sure what I’d won at first.

‘Once it was confirmed, I was delighted and couldn’t wait to tell my partner. It’s like winning the lottery!

‘We’ve just bought a new house together so this money will really help!’

Suzanne, Wishaw

Our first winner, Suzanne, is part of Cat Concern, a small charity, which was set up in 2011 and helps rescue, neuter and rehome stray, unwanted, abused and abandoned cats of all ages.

Suzanne said: ‘It was so easy to sign up on the app that I had actually forgotten that I had entered the competition.

‘I was in tears when I found out I had won because the money will help our charity, and we’re just a small cat rescue.

‘We rely on grants and donations, but this money will really help our vet bills. It’s the most money we’ve ever had in our bank account.’

Craig, from Nottingham

Craig was out walking his dog when the he received the notification on his app came through to telling him he that he'd won.

He said: 'I nearly fell over in the street when I read it, and to be honest, I'm still in shock!

'I never thought I'd win anything, but to be able to pay off my car is amazing. I feel so lucky.'

Arnold Clark is delighted to announce a new multi-year partnership with Scottish Rugby.

Europe’s largest independent car retailer will be the new front-of-strip sponsor of the Scotland Men’s team.

Arnold Clark will also be the title sponsor of the Men’s and Women’s Premiership and National Leagues from the start of the 2024/25 season.

The Group will support the delivery of rugby across Scotland by providing vehicles to Scottish Rugby employees who work in the community throughout the country.

Arnold Clark’s Chief Operating Officer, Russell Borrie, said: “At Arnold Clark, we understand the positive impact of sport. It’s something that inspires, entertains, and, most importantly, brings people together to play, to watch and to voice their support.

"Through our Community Fund, we’re proud to support teams at the grassroots level and to provide young athletes with the opportunity to develop. And now, as shirt sponsors of the Scotland Men’s rugby team, we’re thrilled to empower their successes as they represent Scotland at the highest level.

“This is a partnership built on shared values; both Arnold Clark and the Scottish Rugby are Scottish institutions with proven track records of success. We both aim to be the best in our respective fields, and we know there is so much that we can learn from each other. We will share best practices and work closely together to set new standards as we work towards our common goals.

“At Arnold Clark, we invest in people. We upskill our employees, build new careers through apprenticeships, and we work hard to give our customers the best possible experience. This partnership is a significant investment for us – in the players, the coaches, and those who support the team. We believe that rugby is more than just a game; it’s a community – and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Scottish Rugby’s Commercial Director, Chris Healy commented: “This new partnership represents an exciting opportunity for both Scottish Rugby and Arnold Clark, who we are delighted to welcome into our family of partners.”

Scottish Rugby’s Head of Business Development, Charlie Simpson added: “It was clear Arnold Clark has exciting plans to expand its business beyond Scotland and Scottish Rugby provides a highly visible platform to help accelerate that growth both in the UK and beyond.

“Aligning two proud Scottish organisations creates lots of opportunities and we welcome Arnold Clark’s commitment to community sport and their desire to make the most of this partnership in the years to come.”

To mark the new partnership, Arnold Clark 'painted' the Scotland Rugby side's home pitch at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in a clip for social media.

In the video, the grass at Murrayfield has been turned yellow to match the colours of the iconic car dealer.

Fans will have the first chance to see the new front of shirt sponsorship when the 2024/25 Scotland kit is revealed on 2 August.

Dacia Duster 2024

Dacia has lifted the wraps on the 2024 version of its big seller: the Duster.

And it’s a model which, I believe, many drivers secretly covet because of its affordability, understated nature and versatility.

No coincidence then that Dacia claims this sleek, third-generation Duster to be the ‘best bargain on the market’.

Expect prices to start around £18,000 when the SUV arrives at Arnold Clark dealerships next summer. It’s worth highlighting that the Duster has been Europe’s bestselling SUV bought by private retail customers every year since 2018.

Clearly, the Duster has been at the core of Dacia’s success over the last 20 years or so: the company has sold more than 2.2 million Dusters worldwide. At the Duster plant in Romania, one rolls off the production line roughly every minute.

This new generation is set to lift the standards even higher, introducing new engines — including a hybrid — increased technology, and greater practicality. All that, while still remaining focused on value for money.

The new Duster is an impressive looking SUV. It’s clear it has been heavily influenced by the Bigster concept revealed in 2022. Built on a new platform — the same CMF-B platform which supports the Renault Clio and Captur, plus the Dacia Sandero and Jogger — it’s slightly wider and lower (1.81m and 1.66m respectively) than the model it replaces. Interestingly, it retains the same length at 4.34m.

The result is an SUV which now has an even stockier stance, and whose looks have been further enhanced by the addition of chunky wheel arches, plus robust bumpers back and front. The 2024 model also benefits from an extra 7mm ground clearance.

There are some big changes

At the front, there’s a new look for the grille and headlights: note how the parallel lines across the grille flow into the daytime-running light signature. The rear door handles have now been hidden in the C pillar, plus, overall, there’s a new sleek look, a result of the roofline sloping down to the rear.

Pop round to the rear and you can’t miss the C-shaped rear lights. And when it comes to boot space, there’s another improvement: up from 442 litres in the previous two-wheel-drive Duster to 472 litres.

Dacia’s decision to move to the CMF-B platform will, according to the company, ‘reduce vibration and noise from the road, enhancing driver comfort’, plus ‘it provides a quantum leap in driving pleasure, with an unmatched connection to the road’.

For now, we’ll have to take Dacia bosses’ word for it — we won’t drive the new Duster till early next year.

Will there be a choice of trim levels?

While much of the 2024 Duster remains a mystery, we do know it will be available with a choice of four trim levels.

The entry-level Essential is followed by the Expression trim, with Journey and the slightly more offroad-focused Extreme sitting at the top of the range. The car’s software can also be updated over the air, meaning it doesn’t have to be taken to a dealer to download bug fixes and new functions.

Inside the Essential, there’s a 3.5-inch media screen on the dash, plus a smartphone holder — Dacia believes customers will use this more often than the screen — Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, cruise control and rear parking sensors.

Next up, the Expression adds a 10.1-inch screen and Dacia’s newly revised infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a reversing camera, a larger seven-inch driver’s display and 17-inch alloys.

Which trim will be the big seller?

But it’s the Journey and Extreme specs which are expected to be the biggest sellers in the UK. Dacia claims that high trim levels usually account for 70% of sales in the UK.

So, what do you get? Well, the Journey includes an electric parking brake, a wireless smartphone charger, an updated sound system, hands-free entry, automatic air conditioning and 18-inch alloys.

The outdoor-focused Extreme benefits from washable upholstery and rubber floor mats in the cabin and boot, plus electric folding door mirrors, sat nav and Copper Brown styling flourishes, both inside and out.

Intriguingly, the most novel interior feature in the Duster is probably a new option called ‘YouClip’.

Fitted as standard — with three clips or five, depending on the trim level — it allows the occupants to fix accessories like a cupholder, a bag hook, a tablet stand, an induction-charging phone holder and a portable torch, all of which will be sold through Dacia dealers.

Tell me about the engines and 4x4?

As for engines, the 2024 model sees the introduction of hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains alongside a pure-petrol engine. There is no diesel option. The current entry-level 88bhp three-cylinder turbo petrol has been removed from the new range.

Instead, the 2024 line-up starts with the TCe 100 Bi-Fuel, 99bhp four-cylinder engine, which can run on both petrol and LPG, having a 50-litre tank for each. According to official tests, fill both tanks and the Duster will do around 800 miles without stopping for fuel.

The mild-hybrid engine mates a 1.2-litre turbo petrol triple, a 48V electric motor and a 0.9kWh battery. It’s also the only one available with the four-wheel drive system, which functions similarly to the old Duster’s.

Using a simple rotary dial, select Auto and it operates in front-wheel drive most of the time, but diverts power to the rear axle when the front loses traction. One noticeable improvement is that the previous 4x4 Lock mode has been replaced by an off-road setting that actively distributes the torque between the front and rear axles.

Further new tech includes hill descent control, which can be activated in all gears and limits speed to a maximum of 18mph. Compared to the front-wheel-drive models, the 4x4 gains an extra 8mm in ground clearance, making a total of 217mm.

Isn't there a full hybrid version?

Yup. The headline-grabbing powerplant is the Hybrid 140. This pairs a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors – as also available in the Dacia Jogger — for a combined output of 138bhp. Cleverly, its 1.2kWh battery is topped up by regenerative braking and is said to ensure 80% of city driving can be completed on electricity alone.

So, it looks, certainly on paper, that Dacia has nailed the new Duster. We’re looking forward to driving it next year and giving you a full review.

History of the BMW M1

The 1970s was a time of change in the automotive industry.

Taking advantage of the advancements in technology, many manufacturers launched memorable models with bolder designs, including BMW, who captured the public’s imagination with their renowned 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series.

But did you know they also built one of the most unique and memorable sports cars ever?

The BMW M1 is a car so rare that, even to this day, its futuristic design and history leave many wondering what might’ve been. Having been praised as one of the most memorable sports cars ever produced, the highly sought-after M1 was a project that almost didn’t come to fruition. Following their near bankruptcy in the 1950s, the 1970s saw critical acclaim come BMW’s way. With a bolstered line-up, the marque decided to go one step further.

BMW’s recently formed Motorsport division, headed by Jochen Neerpasch, planned a new car programme. Not just a car but a full-on racer that could take on their rival, Porsche. Neerpasch wanted to revive BMW’s mid-engine sports car concept, which dates to the early seventies. The mid-engine layout was chosen to outclass the competition. Their desire to compete in motorsports initiated the project, and by the mid-1970s, the M1 was born. Intended both as a road car and a race car, the ‘M’ denoted the Motorsport division and the ‘1’ signified the car’s importance in engineering history.

The M1 was the first mid-engine BMW to be mass-produced and held that accolade for over three decades until the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid utilised the same powertrain layout.

The car was also created to represent BMW in a new Manufacturers Championship - FIA Group 5 racing series, initially based on cars with production silhouettes. BMW couldn’t build the 400-road-going car models required by regulation, so they partnered with Italian manufacturer Lamborghini. However, despite its initial tubular steel chassis produced by designer Giampaolo Dallara and seven prototypes being built, Lamborghini ran into financial difficulties, resulting in BMW taking complete control of the project in 1978. Due to the delays and financial difficulties, BMW could no longer compete in the Group 5 racing series and had to settle for Group 4 instead.

BMW opted to build the M1 themselves with the help of renowned Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and a group of former Lamborghini engineers who founded the design firm Ital Engineering. His design was highly innovative. The fibreglass body suited the car's wedge shape perfectly and the retractable headlights were particularly appealing.

Car enthusiasts and critics alike couldn’t get enough of the futuristic design. Its appearance resembled the original Lotus Esprit, a model also designed by Giugiaro. Giugiaro, at the time, said, “The BMW M1 was a very important car for me because it was the first time I had the opportunity to design a mid-engined sports car. I wanted to create a car that was both beautiful and functional, and I think I succeeded with the M1.”

The two-seater sports car was hand-built in Italy and shipped to Stuttgart, where BMW installed the hand-built engines and hardware. Final preparations were carried out in Munich by BMW Motorsport, where each car was given a final tune and road test.

The M1 was only 3.7-feet high and six feet in width. Its aggressive styling was a hit. With its aerodynamic look and low stance, the M1 oozed sports appeal. It was a unique and innovative car ahead of its time – a testament to BMW’s engineering prowess, not to mention performance.

Despite the car's cutting-edge design and numerous accolades, some felt the interior was plain and minimalistic, with some at the time comparing it to the ultimate kit car. The basic dashboard layout was simplistic to operate and provided great functionality. The gear stick and steering wheel were perfectly positioned, as were the half-leather/half-cloth hand-stitched seats. However, those over six feet struggled to get comfortable due to the bulkhead separating the cockpit from the engine bay. As expected, rear visibility wasn’t great, but what did many expect from a road-going race car?

On the road, due to its mid-engine layout and suspension system, the M1 won many over. Its excellent handling and balance, particularly at high speed, made it one of the best sports cars of the era. It gripped the road like glue, helped in part to the brilliant Pirelli P7 tyres, demonstrating excellent downforce and agility. The M1’s aerodynamics came into their own. The response was immediate and direct, with the ZF transaxle producing good acceleration, a comfortable ride, responsive drive, and controlled handling. The M1 was the pinnacle of the hyper fast street cars.

The M1’s M88 powertrain was powered by a 3.5-litre in-line straight six. The road-going model produced a modest 273bhp, while the race model delivered a massive 850bhp. It was the first BMW road car to feature a four-valve-per-cylinder layout, double-overhead cams, and timed mechanical fuel injection. The engine powered two generations of the M5 and the M635CSi coupé. 0 – 60mph was 5.8 seconds, with a top speed of over 160mph, making it the fastest-ever BMW road car at the time.

Only 456 units were ever produced of the M1, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive BMWs ever. 400 were road-legal cars, with 56 being used as race cars. Although BMW eyed Porsche as its main competitor, the De Tomaso Pantera, Maserati Merak, and Lotus Esprit were also popular. However, the Porsche 911 was their most direct competitor due to comparable price and performance.

Production of the M1 ran from 1978 to 1981. The M1 was a critical and commercial success and, to this day, is still considered to be one of the most iconic BMWs ever built. In late 1980, BMW took the decision to stop production of the M1, citing a decline in the exotic sports car market.

To try and salvage its reputation on the racetrack, BMW’s racing pedigree was called into action for the Procar Championship – a series the Formula One Constructors Association ran from 1979 to 1980. The top five qualifiers in each Formula One race would compete against fifteen privateers, all driving M1s. The car finally took to the racetrack in 1979, though it was dogged with failures from the outset. Niki Lauda won the inaugural 1979 season, with the 1980 season by Nelson Piquet.

One of the positives from the disastrous production was that by the time the car got into its stride, requirements for Group 5 racing had changed, which left the M1 all dressed up with nowhere to go. The car did compete in various guises, such as the Le Mans 24-hour race from 1980 to 1986. Despite being fitted with a turbocharger, it gradually became outdated and uncompetitive.

When the road-going M1 went on sale in the UK, it cost an eye-watering £37,500, more than a Ferrari BB512. Its competitors – the De Tomaso Pantera GTS, Porsche 911, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage – were considerably cheaper. Despite not being established, the M1 was more expensive and less reliable than its competitors from the outset.

Buying a used M1 today will set you back more than £500,000.

The BMW M1’s history might be brief, but it lives on in people’s hearts and minds. From critics to enthusiasts, the iconic car was not only ahead of its time, but its innovative styling and uniqueness inspired a generation. BMW’s famous ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline never felt so apt.

BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport review

If you’re unfamiliar with BMW’s ‘i’ range of cars, most are effectively the all-electric equivalents of their traditional petrol and diesel range.

So far, there are six of them (ten, if you count the ‘M’ models separately) ranging from the standalone iX SUV to the 7-Series counterpart, the i7.

The i4 was the original and, you guessed it, it’s pretty much an engineless 4-Series Gran Coupé.

Apart from elongated kidney grilles, which divide opinion, it looks just like any normal road car. And you’d be hard pushed to tell there wasn’t an engine under the bonnet.

The i4 features ‘electric blue’ decals on the grille and the “exhaust” surround (not that there is an exhaust) as well as down the side on the entry-level Sport version. But, apart from that, there’s little to give the game away.

The Sport model includes 17-inch alloys, a 14.9-inch infotainment system, SatNav, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. It also boasts a Harman Kardon surround sound system, keyless go, leather steering wheel, wireless charger, electrically adjustable sport seats and door mirrors with memory function. Plus, you get ambient interior lighting, LED lights, three-zone air conditioning and a glass roof.

The M Sport model is the same but with more aggressive external bodywork, a leather ‘M’-style steering wheel and 18-inch alloys. But on both models, you can choose between 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloys – at a cost if you’re increasing the wheel size.

Both are rear-wheel drive, with the eDrive35 model producing 286PS and the higher-powered eDrive40 outputting 340PS.

There is also an ‘M’ version called the M50 with 544PS.

The car tested here is the eDrive40 in M Sport trim, which manages 0-62mph in 5.6-seconds (0.4-seconds quicker than the eDrive35 model).

Along with nearly all electric vehicles, the power delivery is instantaneous upon pushing the accelerator.

As a result, the BMW feels pacey, although the additional 54PS over the eDrive35 doesn’t necessarily offer much additional performance in practice.

It handles well, but, being an electric car, the weight of the batteries makes it feel heavier and less nimble than a petrol-powered BMW, with more understeer on the way into a corner.

As you continue around the bend, the rear-wheel drive picks up the momentum and helps to turn.

Ride comfort, even on the largest optional 19-inch wheels, is refined, so those opting for the standard 17- or 18-inch options should have no issues.

If you’re moving from a fossil-fuelled M Sport, you might be disappointed with the handling, but it more than meets the needs of most. And it successfully achieves the difficult blend: a car with keen driving dynamics which is also relaxing to drive.

As a result, long-distance cruises make for easy work and, thanks to quality soundproofing, you’ll be gliding along peacefully, even when flooring the throttle.

The i4’s stopping power impresses, too, with predictive regenerative braking. This tech can adjust the braking system’s ferocity automatically by using the SatNav to predict the speed needed to navigate the next bend.

Curiously, the i4 features a composition soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, the man behind the music to Pirates of The Caribbean among many others. It provides an electronic ‘engine note’ which is clever but, unlike in most cars, it’s not attempting to replicate the sound of a petrol-powered motor. Some folks won’t like it, and it can be turned off if you want relative silence.

The interior of the i4 looks as normal as any other BMW, so the minimalistic, futuristic aesthetic of some electric car interiors isn’t found here. That is no bad thing, as people who are moving to an i4 from a regular BMW will instantly feel at home.

That said, the digital instrument display (known as Live Cockpit Plus) and the infotainment screen (known as BMW Curved Display) are housed in one unit, which sits behind the steering wheel like an ultra-widescreen tablet.

The system is the latest evolution (version 8.0 to be precise) of BMW’s famed iDrive system. It remains the industry leader, offering crisply clear graphics, informative and intuitive layouts and plenty of customisable features.

Voice control works well, which is a relief, as the air conditioning controls are on the touchscreen, which would otherwise make it a fiddle to adjust on the move.

The seats are comfortable and, from the driver’s perspective, there’s plenty of space to spare. Meanwhile, electronic seat adjustment makes it easy to find a suitable driving position, which you can then save via the seat’s memory function.

The roof slopes down towards the rear, which slightly reduces the headroom in the back seats. But, overall, it’s not bad and at least there’s plenty of legroom on offer.

Despite appearing to be a saloon (BMW insists it’s a coupé) the i4 is technically a hatchback, given how the boot opens.

This makes the 470-litre cargo capacity easily accessible. And, even more conveniently thanks to 40:20:40 split-folding seats, it expands to 1,290-litres – around 50 litres more than a Tesla Model 3.

All i4s include an 83.9kWh battery capable of a 10-80% top-up in just 30 minutes at a charging speed of 210kW. But few public chargers manage that speed at the moment, while Tesla’s own exclusive network charges at a rate of 250kW.

A range of 347 to 365 miles is claimed in the i4 M Sport driven here, while the Sport version will achieve 337 to 352 miles, although expect less than this in practice. Also, savings are to be found in benefit-in-kind tax, which means the i4 will appeal to company car users.

The BMW i4 was crash-tested in 2022 by Euro NCAP and only earned a four-star rating. This score may not sound bad, but BMW will be disappointed given most of their cars are able to earn five stars.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

The cost of petrol worldwide

It scored 87% for both adults and children and 64% for safety assists – lower scores than the 3-Series and the 4-Series coupé. But this may be explained by Euro NCAP making its testing criteria more stringent in the meantime.

The i4 includes automatic emergency braking, forward and rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, plus adaptive cruise control.

Driving Assistant, which uses radar and camera systems, is also offered as standard. This technology can be upgraded to include steering and lane-control assist, parking assist, traffic light detection and wrong-way warnings.

Overall, the i4 retains BMW’s reputation as a class-leader when it comes to refinement, luxury, gadgetry, and practicality.

Its handling is good, albeit not on a par with petrol models, while it retains a decent level of ride comfort despite large alloys.

Those whose only mission is to experience the thrills of driving may be tempted to wait to switch to an electric car. But for what it is, the first iteration of the i4 confirms that BMW isn’t heading in the wrong direction.

Fast Facts – BMW i4 eDrive40, M Sport trim as tested:

Max speed: 118mph

0-62 mph: 5.6secs

Range: 347 to 365 miles (83.9kWh battery)

Powertrain layout: electric motor with rear-wheel drive

Max. power (PS): 340PS

CO2: 0g/km

End of an era as Volvo pulls the plug on its estate cars in UK

It’s the end of an era.

Volvo estate cars, for so long the bastion of families requiring space for a growing family and a cavernous boot to carry all the familial clobber, have been axed in the UK as the switch to electric continues.

The news comes after the iconic Swedish carmaker confirmed it will now exclusively sell SUVs in the UK, meaning the Volvo S60 Saloon, V60 and V90 Estate follow the S90 into retirement.

So, what’s the reason behind the decision? Simple. Sales of the models have dropped significantly in the UK as buyers flock to Volvo SUVs.

In the first half of 2023, almost 25,000 new Volvos were registered in the UK. Less than 10% of the vehicles were estates or saloons. By contrast, SUVs make up 70% of all of Volvo’s 291,000 car sales.

‘We continue to rapidly transform our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars,’ a spokesman for the company said.

‘We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition.

‘As a result, we have removed further models from the UK line-up. These include the S60, V60 and V90. Demand for our existing SUV line-up continues to grow, while interest in our forthcoming fully electric EX30 and EX90 models is strong.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

The cost of petrol worldwide

‘Meanwhile, appetite for our saloon and estate models has fallen to very low levels in the UK, which has led to our decision to remove these models from sale in the UK.’

So, from a business perspective, the decision to pull the plug on the estates is completely logical. But the decision brings to an end to an almost 60-year journey after the P220, or Amazon, went on sale in the UK during the 1960s.

But before that, the first-ever Volvo estate to go on sale was the Volvo PV455 Duett, which launched in 1953. Since then, it’s estimated the company has sold around six million estate cars around the world, including 24,775 sold globally this year.

The bulk of the estates built for the UK market were produced in Volvo’s Torslanda factory in Gothenburg. The firm will now use the capacity for other models. Production of both saloon and estate models will continue for markets where there is still demand, including those requiring right-hand drive vehicles.

But if you’re desperate to stick with a Volvo estate, buyers can still purchase surplus stock through the company’s website or talk to someone at your nearest Arnold Clark Volvo dealership.

The current Volvo range, though, will continue to expand as the demand for SUVs grows across the UK. Worth highlighting, of course, is that their structure and chassis shape are more acceptant of the future requirements of carrying heavy battery packs as we shift to an all-electric new car marketplace.

Today’s Volvo range now starts with the XC40 and C40 Recharge, with the XC60 filling the gap between them and the seven-seat XC90. These will be joined later this year by the new EX30 crossover, with the EX90 joining the line-up in 2024. A successor to the XC60 is due to arrive in 2025.

ŠKODA Kamiq Monte Carlo review

Almost every automaker is producing small SUVs nowadays.

Usually called ‘crossovers’, there are so many of them on the roads that it’s heavily diluting the traditional market leader, the family hatchback.

The point of the crossover is that you get the best of both worlds: the sought-after bigger feel of an SUV while retaining the general shape and practicality of a hatchback.

The Kamiq is the smallest SUV ŠKODA makes, although it’s slightly larger than the SEAT Arona and the Volkswagen T-Cross, which share the same underpinnings.

That should give the Kamiq the edge when it comes to practicality, then.

Looks-wise, the Kamiq is pleasant enough without setting the world alight, although it certainly looks more aggressive in Monte Carlo trim, which is what we’re testing.

It features blacked-out elements, including the grille, part of the alloy wheels, the door mirrors, window surrounds and the roof rails.

There are three lower trims, too, with the entry-level SE receiving 17-inch alloys, an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a digital radio. It also gets electrically adjustable door mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers and a leather steering wheel.

The SE Drive acquires tinted windows and upgrades the infotainment to a 9.2-inch Amundsen sat nav screen with gesture control. Meanwhile, the SE L Executive gets a 10.25-inch virtual cockpit screen, larger 18-inch rims, keyless entry/go, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and power-folding door mirrors.

The Monte Carlo grade adds LED front and rear lights, a panoramic glass roof, red and black sports seats and the previously mentioned distinctive exterior look, which sets it apart from the other trims.

A trio of petrol units are offered, although the entry-level 1.0-litre 95PS engine, which is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox, isn’t obtainable with the Monte Carlo trim.

There is also a 1.0-litre 110PS variant available, along with a 1.5-litre power unit producing 150PS. Both engines come with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Monte Carlo, under review here, boasts 150 horses and the seven-speed automatic, both of which provide smooth performance and feel more refined than the other engines. But this much poke in a small crossover seems excessive.

The 95PS entry-level unit has plenty to offer if most of your journeys will be in stop-start traffic, while the 110PS is a decent middle-ground which will likely suit most consumers.

While 150PS is nice, the Kamiq is a comfortable cruiser and features one of the most absorbing suspension setups in its class.

As a result, though, it doesn’t feature the keen handling the Monte Carlo edition’s sportier looks hint towards.

It is fine for everyday use, but if you think buying the athletic-looking model will translate to improved cornering ability, you’ll be mistaken.

The Kamiq is effortless and soothing to drive, but if you want a sportier car, there are better options to go with the energetic appearance.

As for the interior, it looks nice, but it's a step down from more luxurious brands, although the build quality is good.

The limited use of brighter colours makes it feel dingy, even though you get some nice red trim on the Monte Carlo’s seats.

The steering wheel looks nice, and the layout has a reasonably modern vibe, but nothing feels markedly futuristic.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

The cost of petrol worldwide

On the other hand, ŠKODA’s infotainment system is pretty good, offering crisp graphics and an intuitive menu layout, but it can feel a little sluggish sometimes.

The top two trims get the virtual cockpit, which replaces analogue dials with a digital instrument screen. It is friendly and informative, incorporating the sat nav map on its display when the system is active.

The voice control system called ‘Laura’ makes adjusting things simpler, although it’s not always 100% accurate when interpreting commands.

Practicality-wise, the driving position isn’t high, but the seats are comfortable and finding an ideal seating position is straightforward. Adjustable lumbar support is offered as standard on the top two trims.

There is plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front and the back, and visibility out of the front is good as the pillars are relatively thin. Meanwhile, rear parking sensors are included as standard throughout the range.

The Monte Carlo edition also has a rear-view camera.

There are plenty of cubbies to store things in the cabin, and a useful optional extra adds some pull-out drawers underneath the front seats.

The boot capacity is 400 litres, expanding to 1,395 litres with the rear seats folded down, although they only fold in a 60/40 configuration. Meanwhile, a height-adjustable boot floor is offered to get rid of the load lip.

A figure of 47mpg is claimed in the 150PS engine of the Monte Carlo, emitting 137g/km of CO2.

That compares with 46-49mpg (130-139g/km of CO2) of the 110PS unit, depending on trim and transmission, and 51mpg (125g/km of CO2) with the 95PS engine.

ŠKODA is a reliable brand nowadays, and the Kamiq is a safe car, having earned a five-star rating when tested by Euro NCAP in 2019. It scored 96% for adults, 85% for children and 76% for safety assists, which include automatic emergency braking and tyre pressure monitoring.

You also get hill hold control, while technology including lane-keep assist, is available on higher models, along with various features offered as optional extras.

Overall, the ŠKODA Kamiq is an excellent little car that offers family-friendliness and practicality in abundance.

The Monte Carlo trim looks nice, but the car’s characteristics are at odds with its sporty looks.

On the plus side, it has a pleasant interior, a smooth transmission, a comfortable ride, and plenty of space inside.

If you keep your spec sensible and resist the enormous variety of options, you’re on to a winner – especially, if you’re willing to wait for bargains, given there’s a facelifted version on the way soon.

Fast facts – ŠKODA Kamiq [Monte Carlo trim, 1.5 TSI] as tested:

• Max speed: 136mph

• 0-62 mph: 8.5secs

• Fuel economy: 51.4-55.4mpg

• Engine layout: 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine

• Max. power (PS): 150PS

• CO2: 137g/km

• Price: £40,110
