For used Audi Q7 cars, choose Arnold Clark

One of the most practical seven-seat SUVs available, the Audi Q7 has dominated the marketplace since its launch in 2005. In fact, such was its success that Audi then expanded its SUV lineup, first bringing in the Q5 and subsequently the Q3 and Q2.

Audi Q7 updates and facelifts

When the Mk2 Q7 arrived in 2015, Audi had perfected the formula, offering a car that had everything: style, performance and practicality. The Q7 e-tron was added in 2016 – an electric-only option for the eco-conscious – and the SQ7 for those who required sportier performance. The Audi Q7 received a facelift in 2019, boasting some revised exterior elements, recalibrated suspension and mild hybrid technology, as well as more power for the 3.0-litre TDI diesel engine.

It almost goes without saying that the Q7 has scooped up its fair share of awards over the years. The used Audi Q7 was named Used SUV of the Year at the Car Dealer Magazine Used Car Awards in 2022, and took the prize for Best Luxury SUV for Comfort at the 2021 What Car? Awards. It was also recognised at the 2016 Tow Car Awards for its modern interior and punchy performance.

Almost 20 years on from its initial launch, the Q7 continues to impress, rivalling models such as the Land Rover Discovery and Volvo XC90. Engine options include a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, while the SQ7 boasts a 4.0-litre V8 diesel. Those looking for a greener option can select the diesel plug-in hybrid, and drivers that prefer petrol power have the option of a 3.0-litre 335bhp unit. Trims include the Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung, each bringing a unique character and increased level of equipment to the Q7.

Practicality and style of the car

The elevated ride height ensures a commanding view of the road ahead. With an SUV the size of the Q7, you’re never going to struggle for cabin space. Each of the seven seats offers ample head and legroom, comfortably fitting adults in the front and second rows, and children or teens in the rear. Access to the third row is made easier by tipping and folding mid-row seats – and when you need luggage space rather than passenger room, simply push a button to fold the third-row flush with the boot floor.

Every passenger seat has ISOFIX mounting points too, giving multiple options for carrying little ones.

Choose the Q7 PHEV and you’ll only get five seats due to the location of the battery. That won’t be a problem for drivers with smaller families.

The Audi Q7 isn’t only generous with cabin space. With all seven seats in place, the boot offers 295-litres of luggage capacity, which is accessed by a powered tailgate that comes as standard. Collapse the third row and this extends to 770-litres, while with all rear seats down you’ve got 1,955-litres at your disposal – significantly more than the Volvo XC90. The SQ7 and Q7 e-tron, meanwhile, offer 705-1,890-litres and 605-1,835-litres respectively.

There are few cars that make towing a caravan easier or more enjoyable than the Q7. Some used models may be available with an electrically deployable hitch or the Trailer Assist option, which allows you to set the desired angle of your trailer. Able to haul up to 2,800kg, this capable SUV can tow the largest of caravans or horseboxes effortlessly.

Running costs

As a premium SUV, the Audi Q7 occupies the higher insurance groups, sitting in the 35-50 out of 50 bracket. With a list price of over £40,000 too, road tax for models from 2017 onwards will cost up to £570 per year for the first five years following initial registration, with rates then dropping to the standard fee of around £180 depending on the trim and engine.

How a used Audi Q7 drives

A powerhouse like the Audi Q7 needs robust engines to ensure a dynamic drive, and this family SUV certainly delivers. Two diesel options are available, both of which boast a 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit. The entry-level 45 TDI produces 228bhp and 500Nm of torque, delivering an impressive 0-62mph time of 7.1 seconds. Step up to the 282bhp variant and performance is little short of breathtaking, whisking you from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 150mph. Whichever you pick, you’ll benefit from 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, and fuel efficiency sits between 39.8-41.5mpg.

Petrol buyers have just one option: the 55 TFSI, which is a 3.0-litre unit with an output of 395bhp. Acceleration is even swifter in this variant, taking just 5.6 seconds to reach 62mph from a standstill, and hitting a top speed of 155mph.

If that kind of performance still doesn’t check your boxes, there’s the truly outstanding SQ7. This offers 4.0-litre V8 petrol and diesel options, with the former delivering 500bhp and a staggering 770Nm of torque. That’s enough to propel you to 62mph in only 4.1 seconds. The latter produces 429bhp and 900Nm of torque, hitting 62mph in 4.8 seconds. There’s not a huge compromise on fuel economy either, with the diesel SQ7 returning 37.2-39.2mpg.

The most eco-friendly option is the diesel-electric PHEV, which combines the 3.0-litre V6 228bhp engine with a 148bhp motor to produce 376bhp. With an all-electric range of 26 miles, it’s a perfect choice for families living in urban or suburban areas, and its green credentials don’t impact its performance: this version can still sprint from 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds. CO2 emissions are significantly lower than the combustion engine variants too, sitting at 72g/km.
